Recording tips and tricks

How do you musicians like to experiment with sounds?

For recordings, I really love to record white noise cause sometimes you just get that perfect atmosphere when you mix it in. Or slicing up white noise and looping can always be fun.
Panning is another cool effect. In one song I had two of the same track play at the same time. What I did was I phased them at individual phases to create this kind of wave-like motion in the music. It gives off this really cool dreamy hypnotic-like effect. (You can check out the song "Hypnagogia" where I used this effect in my Myspace link below)

But vocals are always a pain for me. Because 1. I can't really sing and 2. I can't really sing. It sucks sometimes haha, and I never figured out how to autotune correctly. Adding reverb helps mask out some of the bad singing, but it just muddies out the song. Any tips guys?
Mixing is an artform, just as important as writing the song itself (if not even moreso). I view mixing as creating an illusion for the ear sometimes, where you manipulate sounds so that it sounds a certain way. Filters, compressors, equalizers all help in this part.

Share some of the cool stuff you guys have figured out while recording. Tips and tricks Don't be afraid to show us what you've learnt.

If anyone's interested, here's my Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/translogicnoise
Some of the tracks may be a bit on the experimental side.

[addedon]January 3, 2011, 4:55 am[/addedon]For any newbies out there (well aren't we all haha), recording goes to the concept of "its how you use it not how big it is". By big I'm referring to expensive equipment. Music is about creativity, and nothing can limit that glass ceiling. I repeat, it's about how you use things not how good your equipment is.
Ok, I digress, to a certain level it is about how good your equipment is. But unless you're at that level (where you can quit your day job to just record music) there isn't an excuse not to do what you love (this is assuming you love making music of course).
I used to record all my stuff using my Macbook mics. Now again, Macbooks may be expensive but the mics are HORRIBLE. But it got me through, gave me a bit of experience on things.
I only have a cheap set of twin condenser mics with me right now. I don't have stands for them, so you can imagine how tangled up with wires my studio (aka bedroom) is.
Don't have an amp? If you happen to have a few pedals lying around, it might have a USB feature where you can connect it to your laptop and record off it. When I first discovered this feature on my ZOOM G2.1, I went crazy!
Forget about MIDI Keyboards. Most software have their own notation system, or even better, a function that lets you use your own computer keyboard to input. It's tiring sometimes, but it works. Also, if you guys want some sounds go to www.freesounds.org they have alot of user submitted (and thus copyright free!) loops and midi sounds for your using pleasure.

On to software, you can create great sounding stuff on freeware like Audacity. If its a layering program, you're good to go. I'm pretty sure you guys know how to work your way around the internet to get sophisticated software for free. I personally use Logic Pro, but Garageband is more than sufficient to get you started (actually used that for awhile). I'm not too familiar with the Windows scene though.
Getting yourself familiar with your software is key to recording good original songs. My friend can do some crazy stuff on Fruity Loops that I can't even wrap my head around. Same is true when ordinary people (who don't record music lol) look at my Logic Pro workspace. All they see is a mess of tracks here and there. All I see is a beautifully arranged score. Learn your software, it's the first step.

I hope this can start this thread up abit. Feel free to contribute your share of knowledge.
I know loads of people who want to record music but put it off endlessly as they are intimidated by the concept. Once you learn your way around it, it's not hard at all. It's quite simple really. Recording equipment, software, and some musical ability and you're good to go.

Hey guys, just got into playing around with Adobe After Effects.
Here's an example of what i did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma5EH_Ie5j0

The songs original btw
The particles don't react too well and are a bit too floaty because of probably my faulty expressions. I can't tweak the physics much anyways, cause i cant render the particles at real time to see what happens >_<
comment thanx

How to know if I got Streamyx 4mbs coverage?

I checked their website to see if Shah Alam Seksyen 13 had 4mbs coverage, I saw only one road which had. Thing is, the road is in my neighbourhood (Laman Seri), like only jalan-jalan 2 minute to get there. Its a new area, I'm actually quite surprised that got coverage (on that road). So if that road (or maybe even house) got coverage, is there any chance my road should have? And i haven't called 100, its 2.30AM

Playstation Store question

Hi, i know that ps store varies from acc to acc... im downloading loads of stuff from the ps store, but theres still not enough... my acc is registered as singapore acc(closest to malaysia, had a sing address with me) so im guessing im in the asian store... few questions:

how many different stores are there? (ie JP, US and EU) and whether certain countries share stores(i think sgp and hk share the same store)
How are the stores different? (price, different content?)
Is the email for the acc important? can i share an email with another acc? if so, if i just type in a random email will it work?
do i create a new main or can i create a sub? what are subs for anyways?

anyhow, im setting up a US acc soon as i bet theres more content there. can anyone please give me an address(or even just the postal code) for the US... help is very much appreciated

oh, last question regarding MGO... the konami id asks for a postal code, will that filter out the people that you meet in the game according to the country?

oh, and please dont link me to the other guides as i already read through them... I just want a deeper understanding...

Moderator's Note:

Just post at appropriate thread - http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/556275/+2140

Thread closed.
