Fat food = bad sperm

http://healthland.time.com/2012/03/14/does...r-semen-quality

Does Your Sperm Need a Diet? Fatty Foods Linked to Poor Sperm Quality

Gentlemen, you may want to hold the bacon. A new study suggests that eating a high-fat diet may be associated with lower sperm quality.

The study, published online in the European journal Human Reproduction, found that men who ate diets higher in saturated fat had lower sperm counts and concentration than men who consumed less fat. But men who consumed more omega-3 fatty acids — healthy fats found in fish and plant oils — had better formed sperm.

Researchers looked at 99 American men in their mid-30s who were participating in an ongoing study on fertility and environment, at the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center. From December 2006 to August 2010, the researchers questioned the men about their diet and analyzed their semen samples.

The men were divided into three groups based on their total fat intake. The men in highest third of fat consumption (at least 37% of their total calories) had a 43% lower sperm count and 38% lower sperm concentration than the men with the lowest fat intake.

Saturated fats appear to be the star culprit behind poor sperm quality in this study. Men who consumed the most saturated fat (at least 13% of their daily calories) had a 35% lower total sperm count and a 38% lower sperm concentration than the men consuming the lowest levels.

Men who ate the most omega-3 fatty acids, however, had more correctly formed sperm.

According to Dr. Richard Sharpe of the Medical Research Council’s Human Reproductive Sciences Unit at the University of Edinburgh, for normal functionality, sperm depend on their plasma membrane, which is mainly composed of fats. “It is therefore not unreasonable to imagine that the type of fats in the diet may affect sperm membrane fat composition which, in turn, may affect sperm function. To an extent, we are what we eat,” he said in an email statement. Dr. Sharpe is the deputy editor of Human Reproduction and is unaffiliated with the study.

“Diets containing higher amounts of omega-3 fat and lower amounts of saturated fat are associated with favorable semen quality parameters and may be beneficial to male reproductive health,” says study author Dr. Jill Attaman, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Dartmouth Medical School. “Although these findings need to be reproduced, adapting these nutritional modifications may not only be beneficial for reproductive health but for global general health as well. Given the impact infertility has worldwide, many men as well as couples may benefit from such lifestyle changes.”

The new study has its limits. For starters, the researchers acknowledge that the study sample was small and 71% of the participants were overweight or obese. Although previous research has associated obesity with poor sperm quality, the researchers were able to control for this factor. ”We were able to isolate the independent effects of fat intake from those of obesity using statistical models,” said Dr. Attaman in a statement. “The frequency of overweight and obesity among men in this study does not differ much from that among men in the general population in the U.S.A.”

Since it is the first study reporting a relationship between dietary fat and semen quality, the study authors stress the need for further research.

But, men, there’s no shortage of health reasons to adopt a lower-fat diet now. “It is common sense to recommend that men adopt such a diet. If this should also improve their sperm concentration and quality, then it is icing on the cake,” said Dr. Sharpe.

Detergent = drugs

http://moneyland.time.com/2012/03/14/peopl...t-to-buy-drugs/

People Are Stealing Tide Detergent and Using It to Buy Drugs

So say the latest reports about a “crime wave” sweeping the nation. According to multiple news sources, theft of Tide Detergent is soaring across the country, forcing retailers like CVS to consider placing alarms on each bottle as cities establish special task forces to put a halt to the thefts.

The popular detergent has apparently become a kind of currency on the black market. Tide, which sells for about $12 for a 100-oz. bottle and around $18 for 150 oz., reportedly goes for about half that on the streets. Some thieves have resold stolen bottles to stores, and the detergent has supposedly even been showing up in the homes of busted drug dealers.

One law enforcement official in Maryland told The Daily: “We sent in an informant to buy drugs. The dealer said, ‘I don’t have drugs, but I could sell you 15 bottles of Tide.’ … Upstairs in the drug dealer’s bedroom was about 14 bottles of Tide laundry soap. We think [users] are trading it for drugs.”

Another policeman in Oregon said that Tide thieves buy heroin and meth with it. In one drug raid, more Tide than cocaine was found, and one man reportedly stole $25,000 of the detergent over a 15-month period before he was finally busted.

The detergent is described as “liquid gold” by the authorities who are pursuing the thieves, which has so far proved difficult. “There’s no serial numbers and it’s impossible to track,” a Kentucky police officer told The Daily. “It’s the item to steal.”

And those thieves are brazen. Some simply walk into a supermarket, fill up their carts and then dart toward a getaway vehicle outside. In one incident, a security video showed a man who had made off with a cart full of Tide reselling the detergent hours later.

So far, it appears that it’s just Tide that’s the focus of the thefts and not other brands like All or Wisk, apparently because of Tide’s popularity and recognizable color and logo.

The story of the Tide detergent thieves has been widely reported, but still appears to have been at least partly exaggerated. While anecdotal evidence abounds that this is truly occurring, there are little to no hard statistics backing up the claim of a crime wave.

On Tuesday, Fox News quoted a handful of police officers and retailers who disputed that the thefts are widespread. “We are not experiencing a ‘wave’ of Tide thefts,” a CVS/pharmacy public relations director said. He did confirm that the retailer does have security devices on Tide bottles in a few markets but said the thefts are nothing new.

Cleavage is now banned

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/03/11/chess-...-cleavage-rule/

Chess Championships Lose Sex Appeal With New No-Cleavage Rule

This isn’t the beer pong world championships – distractions during a championship chess game are surely unwarranted. An opponent across the table sporting a low-cut top could cause even the most expert chessman to focus on checking her out rather than delivering checkmate. So the European Chess Union has decided to lay out a dress code to keep the classiness in the game.

In an interview with ChessBase News, ECU general secretary Sava Stoisavljevic says that “many of the players were not wearing proper clothes” during games. She notes that most other sports have dress codes, so it took little calculating to determine that chess should have one too. And it’s the females who will have to play conservatively when picking from their closets before a tournament. The ECU has put restrictions on the amount of cleavage a player can display.

Stoisavljevic says they considered just how many buttons could be undone on a woman’s shirt. “Décolletés [the French word for cleavage] are partly covered in our regulations, which state that in respect to shirts the second from the top button may also be opened, in addition to the very top button.” And short skirts might be next to go, though there are currently no restrictions.

The new dress code was a response to frequent comments made by spectators and coaches, Stoisavljevic said. Some players show up dressed like they’re “going to the beach,” she notes, explaining that no player had reported being distracted or annoyed. But the code was drafted just in time for the European Women’s Championships in Gaziantep, Turkey, with rather harsh penalties: players who don’t abide by the dress standards could be banned from awards ceremonies.

Perhaps too many players were taking cues from this classic Austin Powers scene. After all, the game hearkens back to the day of body-armored knights and regally-dressed kings. It seems the game’s official outlet is just looking to ensure its modern-day players hold up to the same fashion standards.

http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/j-r...-twitter/122279

J.R. Smith spent the past several months playing basketball in China. While he was gone, he must have forgotten how easily things can go viral.

The Knicks guard was with model Tahiry Jose Thursday night and shared a picture of the woman’s bottom on his Twitter account. Jose’s rear, marketed as the biggest ever, was only covered by a hardly visible thong. Smith joked that the behind was so large it was blocking his view of the TV.

Smith deleted the picture shortly after posting it online, but it was too late and it went viral over the next 24 hours.

Prior to his team’s game Friday, he expressed no remorse for posting the picture. After the loss, he was singing a different tune.

“I didn’t know it was going to be as big deal as it is now,” Smith said after his team’s loss to the Bucks Friday. “I definitely regret it. It takes away from our team. Anytime I do anything that takes away from our team, I’m definitely going to regret it.

“A few people talked to me about it,” Smith said. “It’s not the smartest move. I understand that now. I just have to be smarter in my decisions.”

Smith said he expects to hear from the league about the picture.

He’s probably regretful not only because the picture went viral, but also because it puts him in the middle of an awkward situation.

Jose is the ex-girlfriend of rapper Joe Budden, who apparently is no longer taking the high road in the situation. He may also have to answer to Britanie Girard, the heavily-tattooed woman with whom he was extremely close less than a year ago.

UPDATE: Smith was fined $25,000 by the NBA for the tweet.

http://moneyland.time.com/2012/03/09/imagi...net-zero-homes/

Imagine No Electricity Bills: The Rise of ‘Net-Zero’ Homes

If done properly, a smartly built green home featuring solar power, energy-efficient appliances, and proper insulation can result in the owner facing monthly electricity bills amounting to $0, or thereabouts. Now, one homebuilder is making such “net-zero” features standard in several communities around the U.S.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The builder is Shea Homes, and its environmentally friendly designs aren’t being promoted to young, green-minded Gen X and Gen Y buyers but to older Baby Boomers who have the other sort of green in mind—money. According to the Arizona Republic, the SheaXero concept, as it’s called, which promises owners will pay nothing or nearly nothing in electricity bills, is being made standard in all Shear Homes Active Lifestyle and Trilogy Communities—11 communities in Florida, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and beyond that cater specifically to boomers and other retirees.

Shea first began offering “net-zero” homes in 1999 in San Diego, and now all homes in its “Active Lifestyle” communities, which start at $180,000, will come equipped with solar units designed to replace the home’s normal electricity needs. Shea’s sales pitch promises:

QUOTE

Over the course of a year, depending on where you live, you could save thousands of dollars. And with the cost of electricity rising, your savings could be substantially greater in the future.

The Republic story, which notes that several other builders are also offering net-zero homes in Arizona and elsewhere, quotes at length Rick Andreen, president of Shea Homes Active Lifestyle Communities, who admits that even in green-designed properties, homeowners must still pay some menial monthly electricity bills. Depending on the owner’s lifestyle, the electricity bill could wind up not being cheap at all:

QUOTE

“If a person puts in an overly large swimming pool and fountain, or runs an industrial workshop in their garage, guess what, they will not be a net-zero house,” Andreen said. “And we can’t get rid of the (utilities’) basic service charges. Utility companies need to make money. They are still providing power lines and service at night when we can’t produce energy.”

An owner in Arizona will probably pay a minimum of $8.55 per month, or a bit over $100 a year. For homeowners accustomed to paying $50 or $100 per month for electricity, though, this represents a huge annual savings.

It’s all relative, though: As with hybrid and electric cars, owners who buy net-zero homes pay a premium upfront, with the idea that they’ll save money down the line. Whether you actually wind up saving in the long run depends on a number of factors, including the price of gas (or electricity) during the course of ownership, and how you drive (or live).

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...2956&sec=nation

Malaysia safest country in Southeast Asia, 19th in the world

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has been recognised as the safest country in Southeast Asia and 19th the world, in the Global Peace Index (GPI) report for 2011, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

He said this was proof of the dedication, commitment and had work of all quarters, specifically the Royal Malaysia Police and related agencies.

"It includes the commitment shown by trained police volunteers from the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) and Civil Defence Department," he said in a statement here Thursday.

He thanked the police and all the agencies involved for ensuring Malaysians were able to live safely, in peace and harmony.

Besides this, he said, last year, the overall crime index recorded a drop of 11% compared with 2010, way above the targeted 5% reduction.

The index for street crimes recorded a 40% decrease compared with 2009, thus meeting the target set, he said.

He said his ministry was committed to retaining the ranking this year by adopting two strategies, the first, beefing up the police with 14,739 more officers and men to conduct more patrolling activities, particularly in the "hot" areas of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Penang.

The rest of the states would get 24,000 additional personnel in all, he said.

The second strategy, he said, was to strengthen the Community Policing progamme by getting members of the public including from residents associations to participate in crime prevention programmes.

The initiative includes the 4-Personnel Patrolling Team in the "hot" areas as well as Sabah and Sarawak.

"Under the programme, police personnel will conduct patrols together with Rela and Civil Defence Department volunteers in selected areas to reduce the crime rate and in the process ensure that the people feel the presence of the police," he said. - Bernama

How to land an A330 airbus?

Being given yet another pointless 'man manual' that told him fifty ways to tie a bow tie in under 30 seconds made James May certain there was a need for another kind of book. This book, in fact.

He reckons there are nine vital things that a chap should be able to do. Not stuff you can download from the internet, but really important things. You never know when you might need to land an A330 Airbus, or deliver twins. And there may well be a moment when being able to play a bit of classical music on the piano is absolutely crucial to your success with women.

So read, learn and be prepared - you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Nazi invading Earth from Moon

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8...2107903,00.html

Are Germans Ready to Laugh at a Film About Nazis from Space?

When the kitschy sci-fi comedy Iron Sky is released in German cinemas this spring, it will pose a couple of interesting questions: Is the Internet offering a viable, new alternative for funding and producing movies? And, perhaps more intriguingly, are Germans ready to laugh about their dark Nazi history?

Iron Sky is a spoof set in the not-too-distant future in which Nazis invade the earth from the moon, where they have been holed up since the end of World War II. The film, a Finnish-German-Australian co-production, portrays Nazis in their familiar comic role as fanatic bunglers, but the real bad guys turn out to be the Americans, who claim the moon for themselves and trigger a nuclear war. Finnish filmmaker Timo Vuorensola came up with the idea while drinking beer in a sauna with friends. "That's where all the best ideas are born in Finland," says his German co-producer, Oliver Damian.

Since the start of production in 2006, the buzz about the Nazis-from-outer-space B-movie has been building steadily online, particularly in Germany. More than 3 million people worldwide watched the Iron Sky teaser released on YouTube in May 2010, and within days of the movie's premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival this February, the official theatrical trailer had been watched by more than 6 million people online. The film now has 115,000 Likes on Facebook, nearly 7,000 followers on Twitter, plus about 2,400 supporters registered on Wreckamovie, Vuorensola's collaborative online-moviemaking platform.

Because of all this prerelease Internet hype — as well as the fact that five screenings at the Berlin Film Festival instantly sold out — many also tipped Iron Sky to walk away with the Audience Prize in the festival's Panorama section on Feb. 18. But, in a surprise turn, the prize went instead to a film about gay pride in Serbia called The Parade, and the critical response to Iron Sky was decidedly mixed. "The effects were great, but the jokes were bad," says Berlin-based director Jörg Buttgereit, maker of the movie Captain Berlin vs. Hitler, a low-budget horror film in which Hitler's preserved brain does battle with a comic-book-inspired hero.

Now that Iron Sky is nearing its general release, some believe it may have a bigger hurdle to overcome than just lame jokes. Even though the film's biggest online fan base outside the U.S. is in Germany, there are some concerns that everyday Germans may not respond well to a Nazi-themed comedy. "Even 66 years after the end of the war, I'm afraid you still can't make jokes about Nazis in Germany," says Lutz Göllner, media editor at Berlin's Zitty listings magazine. The film's release on April 5 also comes at an awkward time in Germany. Law-enforcement authorities have been widely accused of marginalizing the threat of right-wing extremists after it emerged late last year that a neo-Nazi cell was responsible for a string of 10 murders, mostly of immigrants from Turkey. Investigators failed to see a connection between the killings for 13 years, prompting a belated memorial ceremony for the victims attended by Chancellor Angela Merkel on Feb. 23 and a nationwide minute of silence.

History shows that Nazis can be a hard sell in German cinemas too. Especially if they're portrayed in a lighthearted manner. Mel Brooks' 1968 comedy The Producers was actually banned in Germany for years. And a goofy 2007 film about Hitler called My Führer, starring a popular comedian, was panned by critics for being too politically correct and bombed at the box office. Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, however, did connect with German audiences and critics, which could have paved the way for a film like Iron Sky.

Damian says he's convinced his film will be a hit, though he admits he was worried at first. "Basically, everybody in Germany turned us down," he says. "Everybody liked the idea, but when it came to investing, they all said, 'Um ... uh ...'" But now that it's finished and about 150 theaters have agreed to screen it, he's making plans to produce extra copies on short notice in case more cinemas want in on the action. "Germans are not only ready for this, they have actually been waiting for it," he says.

Iron Sky producer Tero Kaukomaa believes the film's box-office potential will be helped by the grassroots role that fans played in not only hyping the film online but also in contributing ideas, and especially money. He says the turning point came in the spring of 2010 when he tried using the same "crowd-funding" model that had been pioneered by British director Franny Armstrong's 2009 documentary about climate change, The Age of Stupid. At the time, Kaukomaa had a $2.7 million gap in his budget. "I was really very nervous," he says. "I felt it was my last chance because the film had been around for a long time and production was postponed twice. The risk the project could die was very present."

After consulting with lawyers, the producers started offering actual shares in the film to investors pitching in at least €1,000 ($1,330). "Then things just took off," Kaukomaa recalls. "Within days, we had hundreds of thousands of euros from crowd investing. And this then influenced our reception at traditional funders." Of the movie's $10 million budget, he estimates about $1.3 million came from crowd funding.

Iron Sky integrated social media in the actual production of the film as well. Using their Wreckamovie collaborative portal, the filmmakers were able to ask members their ideas about what the future would look like in 2018, the types of vehicles the Nazis would drive on the moon and even the kinds of slang words they'd use after being cut off from terrestrial civilization for more than 60 years. And when filming began in Frankfurt in November 2010, the producers were able to summon 200 unpaid extras to appear in a scene in which a Nazi spaceship crashes to earth.

For some fans, the social-media aspect of the film is as big a pull as the unlikely tale. "I'm going to see Iron Sky even if it's a turkey," says Michael Fischer, a lifestyle-marketing consultant and part-time DJ. "I think the crowd-funding thing is cool." Göllner, the Zitty editor, would like to see the film do well for another reason. "Nothing insults Nazis more than when you make jokes about their horrible ideology," he says.
