Malay have the best holiday snacks

I noticed that between Raya, CNY and Deepavali the Malay houses has better choices of snacks compared to the other 2 and has the most effort put into them.

Most Malay houses would have 6-10 varieties of cookies and will have curry puff and other kuih to compliment. Their drinks are normally made from cordial but are well chilled with ice.

CNY seems to be the most low effort style, most they will offer box/canned drinks that was taken out of the chiller 30min ago and their snacks consists of random kacang platter they bought at the super market. The cookies they have on offer during CNY seems to be cheaply made with boring flavors and crumbly texture.

Indians have a somewhat savory affinity for their snacks, the usual culprits of theirs are muruku and the like.

Looking forward to raya, hopefully get to enjoy some good cookies this year.

Inb4 TS fat fuck

FBI director: China is 'greatest threat' to US

QUOTE

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-53329755

The director of the FBI has said that acts of espionage and theft by China's government pose the "greatest long-term threat" to the future of the US.

Speaking to the Hudson Institute in Washington, Christopher Wray described a multi-pronged disruption campaign.

He said China had begun targeting Chinese nationals living abroad, coercing their return, and was working to compromise US coronavirus research.

"The stakes could not be higher," Mr Wray said.

"China is engaged in a whole-of-state effort to become the world's only superpower by any means necessary," he added.

In a nearly hour-long speech on Tuesday, the FBI Director outlined a stark picture of Chinese interference, a far-reaching campaign of economic espionage, data and monetary theft and illegal political activities, using bribery and blackmail to influence US policy.

"We've now reached a point where the FBI is now opening a new China-related counterintelligence case every 10 hours," Mr Wray said. "Of the nearly 5,000 active counterintelligence cases currently underway across the country, almost half are related to China."

The FBI director said that Chinese President Xi Jinping had spearheaded a programme called "Fox Hunt", geared at Chinese nationals living abroad seen as threats to the Chinese government.

"We're talking about political rivals, dissidents, and critics seeking to expose China's extensive human rights violations," he said. "The Chinese government wants to force them to return to China, and China's tactics to accomplish that are shocking."

He continued: "When it couldn't locate one Fox Hunt target, the Chinese government sent an emissary to visit the target's family here in the United States. The message they said to pass on? The target had two options: return to China promptly, or commit suicide."

Washington now sees Beijing as global leadership contender

Analysis by Zhaoyin Feng, BBC News Chinese, Washington

This is not the first time FBI Director Christopher Wray categorised China as a "top intelligence threat" for the US, but on Tuesday he ramped up the criticism by focussing on Beijing's "whole-of-state effort" to become the world's only superpower.

It clearly signals that Washington now sees Beijing not only as an aggressive adversary, but also an ambitious contender for global leadership.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak in the US, the Trump administration has unleashed anger over China from its initial response to coronavirus, to economic espionage, to Hong Kong's new national security law. Mr Wray's remarks are among a series of hard-hitting speeches by senior US officials on the topic.

The Trump administration says it is now time to wake up from the 40 years of policy failures with regard to China, while critics see this as an attempt to deflect attention from the president own failures in office and to increase his chances of winning re-election.

What is certain is that the power dynamics between China and the US have fundamentally shifted, and no matter who will be the next US president, the tense stand-offs of Sino-US relations will inevitably continue.

In the unusual address, Mr Wray asked Chinese-born people living in the US to contact the FBI if Chinese officials target them seeking their return.

The Chinese government has defended this programme in the past, saying it is part of a legitimate anti-corruption effort.

The threat posed by China will be further addressed by the US attorney general and secretary of state in coming weeks, Mr Wray said.

Liu Xiaoming: China is not the enemy of the US
The address comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China.

US President Donald Trump has been highly critical of China amid the coronavirus outbreak, repeatedly blaming the country for the global pandemic. In another move, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said this week that the administration was looking at banning Chinese apps - including the hugely popular TikTok.

The apps "serve as appendages of the Chinese Communist Party's surveillance state", he said.

Actually they are the greatest threat to entire world.

China bubonic plague

China bubonic plague: Inner Mongolia takes precautions after case

Authorities in China have stepped up precautions after a city in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region confirmed one case of bubonic plague.

According to state reports, the Bayannur patient - a herdsman - is in quarantine and in a stable condition.

Officials issued a Level 3 warning, the second-lowest in a four-tier system.

The bubonic plague, caused by bacterial infection, can be deadly, but can be treated with commonly available antibiotics.

The new case was first reported as suspected bubonic plague on Saturday at a hospital in Urad Middle Banner, in Bayannur city.

It is not yet clear how or why the patient might have become infected.

The level 3 alert forbids the hunting and eating of animals that could carry plague and calls on the public to report suspected cases.

Fatal but treatable

Cases of bubonic plague are periodically reported around the world.

Madagascar saw more than 300 cases during an outbreak in 2017.

In May last year, two people in the country of Mongolia died from the plague, which they contracted after eating the raw meat of a marmot - a type of rodent.

A World Health Organization official in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, had told the BBC that raw marmot meat and kidney was thought to be a folk remedy for good health.

SOS: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-53303457

Halal Pork | Muslim bro will you try?

Persuading China to switch to 'fake' pork

"Ma po tofu has to be a favourite," says David Yeung, a smile evident in his voice. "It's very spicy, a little bit numbing, and usually sprinkled with minced pork."
Hong Kong-based Mr Yeung is the founder of OmniPork, part of the environmentally focused venture Green Monday. OmniPork is a plant-based meat alternative that is now on the menu in many of Hong Kong's trendiest restaurants, hotels and bars.

A vegetarian of two decades, he's explaining how substitute meat is not just a market for the North American brands like Impossible Foods, and Beyond Meat, which have become well known for their burgers. He says the Asian market is hungry for home grown meat alternatives.
"Almost everywhere in Asia - Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, especially mainland China - the number one meat is pork. The only exceptions are Muslim countries."

Indeed, China loves pork. The country of almost 1.4 billion consumes more pork per capita than any other nation.
■ Business Daily: Will China embrace 'fake' meat?
Half of the world's pork is eaten in China, and the acceleration has been rapid. In the 1960s China annually consumed less than 5kg per capita. By the late 1980s this was 20kg and has since tripled to over 60kg, according to UN figures.

But the mass-market meat industry has brought with it some very pressing problems, not least, disease. In 2019 African swine fever led to the mass slaughter of pigs in China, and prices rose 25-30%.
And this week, a new strain of flu with "pandemic potential" has also been identified in pigs within China.
This has thrown a sharp focus on meat supply chains and production, something the coronavirus pandemic has intensified.

Localised outbreaks of coronavirus have been appearing across the globe in meat-processing companies, even where infection rates in the general population are low. It's not entirely clear as to why.
■ Why are there outbreaks in meat processing plants?
Covid-19, environmental issues and growing health concerns in a nation with increasingly high rates of obesity, have all encouraged a new wave of plant protein firms to develop new products.
For example, Beijing-based Zhenmeat is looking at 3D printing elements of its products to mimic bone or muscle.

"We eat a lot of different parts of the pig. The Chinese consumer loves different parts for different dishes but we are focusing in on Szechuan hot pot," says chief executive Vincent Lu.
Zhenmeat is throwing its marketing behind one product in particular, created with the Institute of Alternative Protein in Beijing, a meat-free alternative to pork tenderloin, which is popular in hot pot.

It is a very specific cut of pork and style of cooking. But Mr Lu says it's all part of the firm's strategy. "If you look at the US market, consumers love burgers. So what kind of product do consumers love in the Chinese market? Hot pot is the most loved dish."
But none of this innovation comes cheaply.
Matilda Ho is the founder of Bits x Bites, China's first food technology venture capital group. She has backed four different protein companies, from plant-based to cell-based.
"We are just at the beginning," she says. "But will the one-off purchase for the novelty value translate into repeat purchase and product loyalty? That's the big question. In cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu, consumers are known to be eager experimenters when it comes to new food trends. But only a few will turn into behaviour change."

Ms Ho also says it is easy to overstate climate worries as a reason for Chinese consumers to switch from animal protein.
"Taste will always be the driver for consumers to convert their behaviour. It won't be environmental concerns."
Shaun Rein, managing director of the China Market Research Group in Shanghai, says the market is still small but there is potential, given the open-minded nature of Chinese cookery and a willingness of shoppers to experiment.

"Chinese consumers are indeed always looking for alternative sources of protein. We think the market for plant-based meat is about $910m (£730m) and will grow about 20-25% annually. There's a lot of excitement about these 'fake' meats, but the market is fairly small."
But price is a big driver when it comes to long-term change, he adds. "When we interviewed blue-collar workers one of their main concerns was the price. The big winner could be 'fake' meat, or it could be seafood."
Bruce Friedrich is the co-founder of the Good Food Institute, which researches and promotes meat alternatives. He is convinced the price issue will be solved. "While the plant-based meat costs a little bit more than regular meat it will be for people who are interested in looking at the way industrial animal meat is produced.
"But if you can make crops which mimic the way meat tastes and smells and looks, and scale that up, it will become cheaper than animal meat. Then it becomes not just for vegetarians and 'flexitarians' (those who cut meat consumption by going meat-free on certain days) but for everybody."

Maria Lettini is executive director of FAIRR, a global network of investors concerned with issues surrounding intensive animal agriculture. She says with Covid-19, we are likely to have to pay more for our meat in the future.
"How are we going to make this system [of meat production] safe, how are we going to make it more resilient - without that coming at some kind of cost or investment?

"I don't think meat at our grocery stores is being correctly valued. We probably need to be spending more to be able to consume it as much as we are."
David Yeung of OmniPork says that his product is comparable on price. It now appears on UK brand Pizza Express's products in Hong Kong, and Taco Bell branches in Asia. These are big names, but will this new breed of protein pretenders become mainstream any time soon?
Mr Yeung doesn't expect everyone to become vegan, but insists "we are on a ramp-up for the whole industry" and that Asia is leading this change.

"This isn't just about consumer trends, it's about climate change, the pandemic, swine fever. Governments will have to look at this, not just as consumer choice or a trend - but about sustainability of the planet."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-53052856

Chinese People Must Support Palestine

QUOTE

Israel urged to give up annexation plans

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called on Israel to scrap plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, a move that could occur as early as next week.

"We are at a watershed moment," the UN chief told a virtual meeting of the Security Council.

"If implemented, annexation would constitute a most serious violation of international law, grievously harm the prospect of a two-state solution, and undercut the possibilities of a renewal of negotiations. I call on the Israeli Government to abandon its annexation plans," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made annexation a major pledge during campaigning, ahead of the latest round of national elections held in March.

The proposal would see sovereignty extended to roughly 30 percent of the West Bank, covering most of the Jordan Valley.

In response, Palestinian leaders have cut ties with Israel and the United States, which backs the plan.

The UN envoy for the Middle East, Nikolay Mladenov, warned the council that three decades of international peace efforts could be at stake.

"Recognizing that both peoples have a right to live in their ancestral home, 27 years ago, Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed to embark on a noble but difficult road, to resolve the conflict through negotiations, without taking unilateral action, and in order to reach a final status agreement on a just peace," he said, speaking from Jerusalem. "Today we are further than ever from this goal."

In supporting the secretary-general's appeal to Israel, Mladenov feared annexation could trigger instability across the occupied Palestinian territory and even beyond.

He urged the international community to work to get the parties to step back and continue the dialogue toward peace.

Zhang Jun, China's UN ambassador, read a statement at the meeting on behalf of Wang Yi, Chinese state councilor and foreign minister.

"The Middle East is again at a crossroad between peace and turbulence. Shouldering the primary responsibility for the maintaining of international peace and security, the Security Council should and must play its role," Zhang said.

Zhang reiterated China's position, stressing that international consensus must not be contravened. "The two-state solution is a bottom line of international justice."

"China supports the establishment of an independent state of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty on the basis of 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. Israel's right to survival and legitimate security concerns should be fully respected," he said.

Tengok tu, the motherland say you need to support Palestine. If you don’t support a two state solution and equal rights for Palestinian then you are going against the CCP wishes.
