CHINA may have swept all the Asian Games table tennis titles, but it was Japan’s “Porcelain Doll” that made headlines yesterday and had millions of netizens in a spin.

Ai Fukuhara lost to China’s Guo Yue 4-3 in the semi-finals, ending with a bronze and disappointing her legions of fans in China, even as the home paddlers capped their dominance of the sport.

Chinese newspapers and websites featured the 22-year-old heavily, with Internet chatrooms awash with comments bemoaning her defeat, even though it was to a Chinese player.

“The loss of the ‘Porcelain Doll’ took the gloss off the Asian Games table tennis tournament,” said one netizen on popular Internet portal sina.com, in a view echoed by many others.

The widely-read state newspaper Information Daily crowned Fukuhara and her doubles partner Kasumi Ishikawa “the Asian Games’ cutest team”.

It ran an extensive article on the pair, focusing on their popularity in China, ability to speak Mandarin and the tears they shed after losing their semi-final.

Fukuhara in particular was all over the Internet in China, which has the largest number of web users in the world at 420 million.

The strength of feeling among some netizens even had many questioning whether they were letting their country down in feeling sympathy for a player from Japan, China’s arch-rivals. — AFP

Fukuhara began playing at the age of 3 and became a professional at age 10. The following year, she became the youngest player ever to become a member of the Japanese national team. Since young, she has been regarded a 'child prodigy' in table tennis. At age 13, in 2002, she reached the quarterfinals of the Japan table tennis championship.
