Laptop to External Display

I'd used my dell inspiron 1420 for 3 years d, and my warranty past long time ago. Recently my laptop's lcd screen has some problem now and it is shaking horribly. Then I connected my laptop to my old CRT monitor and it works, so I guess laptop's lcd may dead already.

I plan to get an external LED / LCD monitor since repairing a laptop LCD screen is damn expensive. But I found a potential problem: Ext display only shows up when it reaches window login stage, all POST and BIOS screen only shows on the shaking laptop screen. So if oneday the laptop lcd screen gone completely then how am I going to reformat my laptop?

Is there anyway to display the BIOS screen on the external display? My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1420 + NVidia 8400M GS

Thx for your help
