My Comments on Maxis's Iphone 3G plan

Well, I started the this speculating topic: Iphone 3g officially in Malaysia.... SOON? in July '08.

It is glad that Maxis has finally bring in the iphone 3G!! It is really a good news (though I have to apologize as it is NOT the SOON that I expected. )

However, the bad news is the packages are only favour those low data usage group, and it don't have the unlimited data usage packages.

Ok, lets see how much you should pay to Maxis for your iphone 3G :-
(kindly note that for comparison purpose, all contracts below is calculated based on a 24 months, and the cheapest plan.)

A. 6 months contract (only 500mb promotional data)

8gb - Value Plus 80 - RM4,460 = [RM2,540 + (RM80 x 24 months)]
16gb - Value Plus 80 - RM4,880 = [RM2,960 + (RM80 x 24 months)]

Comments: Paying RM2,540 and RM2,960 merely for the Iphone 8gb and 16gb respectively is really not cheap. Some more, you need to tight up with RM80 plan for 6 months with only limited 3G data usage.

B. 12 months contract

8gb - i Value 1 - RM4,300 = [RM1,900 + (RM100 x 24 months)]
8gb - i Value 2 - RM5,428 = [RM1,780 + (RM155 x 12 months) + (RM50 x 12 months) + (RM99 x 12 months)]
8gb - i Value 3 - RM6,278 = [RM1,490 + (RM250 x 12 months) + (RM50 x 12 months) + (RM99 x 12 months)]
8gb - i Value 4 - RM7,368 = [RM1,080 + (RM375 x 12 months) + (RM50 x 12 months) + (RM99 x 12 months)]

16gb - i Value 1 - RM4,690 = [RM2,290 + (RM100 x 24 months]
16gb - i Value 2 - RM5,808 = [RM2,160 + (RM155 x 12 months) + (RM50 x 12 months) + (RM99 x 12 months)]
16gb - i Value 3 - RM6,658 = [RM1,870 + (RM250 x 12 months) + (RM50 x 12 months) + (RM99 x 12 months)]
16gb - i Value 4 - RM7,758 = [RM1,470 + (RM375 x 12 months) + (RM50 x 12 months) + (RM99 x 12 months)]

Assumption: For iValue 2 to iValue 4, assume shifted to Value plus 50 plan plus unlimited data plan after 12 months.

Comments: Paying RM1,900 and RM2,290 merely for the Iphone 8gb and 16gb respectively looks reasonable and actually is cheaper than 6 months contracts stated above. However, 500mb is only suitable for those who don't really use 3G to surf net.

C. 24 months contract

8gb - i Value 1 - RM3,910 = [RM1,510 + (RM100 x 24 months)]
8gb - i Value 2 - RM4,980 = [RM1,260 + (RM155 x 24 months)]
8gb - i Value 3 - RM6,680 = [RM680 + (RM250 x 24 months)]
8gb - i Value 4 - RM9,000 = [RM0 + (RM375 x 24 months)]

16gb - i Value 1 - RM4,290 = [RM1,890 + (RM100 x 24 months)]
16gb - i Value 2 - RM5,360 = [RM1,640 + (RM155 x 24 months)]
16gb - i Value 3 - RM7,060 = [RM1,060 + (RM250 x 24 months)]
16gb - i Value 4 - RM9,260 = [RM260 + (RM375 x 24 months)]

Comments: If you really seldom surf net and really mind about the warranty issues, this i Value 1 - 24 months contract really looks attractive as the phone price is the lowest of the 3 packages. However, hold on, please read my following illustration too!!

Of course, the above is just an simple illustration of what you may need to pay in the next 24 months. In real world, it is normally more complicated. you may shift to other telco or prepaid line after the contract period. That is too far for this discussion.

For those of you who think the Maxis plan not attractive, my following illustration may help you a little bit:-

The price of an 16gb iphone 3G stated in Lowyat.net is ranging from RM2,250 to RM2,650, depends on your luck and bargaining power.

Thus, if you use Maxis Value plus 50 + unlimited data plan, it is equivalent to RM5,826 [RM2,250 + (RM50 x 24 months) + (99 x 24 months)] or RM6,226 [RM2,650 + (RM50 x 24 months) + (99 x 24 months)].

True Move bringing the iPhone 3G to Thailand?

Pretty soon, yet another country will be able to purchase an iPhone 3G. A newly signed deal between Apple and True Move will have the iPhone 3G in Thailand in “the coming months” but as of now no specific launch date has been announced. Actually, at this time, other than the announcement of the deal, True Move has not given many details. Still unknown is any pricing as well as any information regarding calling and data plans. True Move is currently Thailand’s third largest mobile carrier, however their larger rival Advanced Info Service is still in talks and trying to secure a deal of their own. Sounds like a race to be first. But sadly for Thai customers, a 3G network is still reported as being in the testing stage and users will be limited in EDGE and GPRS connectivity.

http://www.iphonefreak.com/2008/11/true-mo...o-thailand.html

I found it quite confusing to the posts recently, as the setting, firmware and the methods of jailbreaking is quite difference for iphone Edge and iphone 3G.

So, should I suggest that any new topics should indicate if it is for [iPhoneEdge] or [iPhone3G]??

iPhone 3G: GPS review

Phone : iPhone 3G 8gb (HK unlocked)
Firmware : 2.0.1
Telco : Maxis 3G
Journey : From Puchong,KL to Ipoh,Perak (using LDP, Federal Highway, and Plus)

For introduction, just to let's u know that I tested the GPS in bukit bintang (while walking) and in front of my house. I works.

However, last Friday, while I am going from Puchong to Ipoh (my wife driving), I encounter some problems with the GPS with Maxis 3G line.

First, there is no "full bar" signals while driving, starting from Puchong, only 2-3 bar most of the time.

Second, ONLY manage to get the "blue dot" under the Sunway bridge before turning into Federal highway while caught in the traffic jam. (This is the only time I saw the "blue dot" in this journey)

Third, there is no more 3g signal after the Sg. Buloh area, only left with EDGE or GPRS.

Conclusion:
So... pretty sad with this test results..

Would appreciate if anyone can share their GPS test with us.

Note: my car is tinted with V-kool.

Apple Can Remotely Disable Apps On Your iPhone

[Source]

Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the book iPhone Forensics Manual, has recently discovered that the new iPhone OS (2.x) has a blacklisting method. In a nutshell, the iPhone will contact home, retrieve a list of unauthorized apps, and then disable any apps installed on your phone that match the blacklist.

“This suggests that the iPhone calls home once in a while to find out what applications it should turn off. At the moment, no apps have been blacklisted, but by all appearances, this has been added to disable applications that the user has already downloaded and paid for, if Apple so chooses to shut them down.

I discovered this doing a forensic examination of an iPhone 3G. It appears to be tucked away in a configuration file deep inside CoreLocation.”

Please note that this is entirely different from Apple removing/delisting the application from the App Store. For example, even though Apple pulled NetShare recently, people who have already purchased the app can still use the NetShare to its full functionality. And while there are currently no apps listed on the blacklist, if Apple decided to add, say NetShare, to the mix, the application would no longer be functional.

The blacklist is located on the following remote URL:

https://iphone-services.apple.com/clbl/unauthorizedApps

According to rumours from The Malaysian Insider, Maxis will offer the iPhone 3G in Malaysia at a competitive price below RM1,000!!! [click here]

can it be true???

Sorry, I DON'T know, only Maxis can confirm that!!! BUT, one thing I am pretty sure is, Iphone 3g will be officially here in Malaysia, either from one of the tel operator, based on the "facts" below...

I found one quite "solid evidence" in the new iTunes 7.7.

Do you notice that iTunes store is now officially offer to Malaysian??

So, what to this meant??

Well, if you are an iTunes user for quite some time, you may notice that iTunes store was not opened for Malaysian to purchase any music or movies online, and Malaysia is not in the "MY STORE" list. Even with this 7.7 version, Malaysian is still unable to purchase music or movies through iTunes, BUT it now offers the App Store officially for us to purchase/download the new iphone 2.0 applications!!
Kindly note that there is only 62 countries are able to ACCESS this App Store at the moment!!! and Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, China and Thailand, the few asian countries which "has been omitted" in the first 70 countries that Iphone 3G is going to launch, is in this App Store list!!

What is that meant, is it an accident??? NOT really!!! Kindly note that some of the so called first 70 countries to launch the Iphone 3g, like Macau and some African countries, are not in the App store list!!! and Brunei, our rich neighbor is NOT in there also!!! Thus, I dont think Apple jsut simply put Malaysia in this App store list for fun and without any purpose!!

Don't tell me, just because a lots of Malaysian is using the first generation iphone.... so, they put us in..
Then, why they don't just put all the countries in the world into the list? and just this 62?? What do they have in mind?? You get my point??

So, what I wanna say today is..... Iphone 3G, may be sooner than what we all expected, will be officially launched Malaysia, soon!!!

Kindly note that, China and Taiwan, which is not in the first 70 countries list, has announced that it will launch Iphone 3G in their country later this year...

Here is some of the free applications I downloaded from App Store!!!

So, prepare yourself!!!! Eventhough it is just my own GUESS!!!
