Win8 ‘Secure Boot’ Could Stop You Installing Linux

Microsoft are pushing for changes to the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware specifications that would prevent any operating system apart from Windows 8 being able to boot on a computer.

The proposal would see all computers sold by manufacturers wishing to gain a ‘Windows Certified’ badge for their devices needing to adhere to the ‘secure boot’ protocol – thus locking out the ability to install Linux in the process.

‘Secure Boot’ works by keeping ‘secret keys’ within the system itself. These keys are then used to “sign” anything that wishes to run – such as operating systems. If an operating system isn’t signed by a matching key then booting of it will not be allowed.

But it’s not just restrictive to software vendors either as Red Hat’s Matthew Garrett explains: -

“A hardware vendor cannot run their hardware inside the EFI environment unless their drivers are signed with a key that’s included in the system firmware. If you install a new graphics card that either has unsigned drivers, or drivers that are signed with a key that’s not in your system firmware, you’ll get no graphics support in the firmware.”

The technology isn’t new; most motherboards shipped today support Secure Boot but have it disabled by default. For the roll out of Windows 8 Microsoft want to see Secure Boot enabled on all devices shipping with their name on by default.

Don’t Panic – At least not yet

First of all, this hasn’t happened yet. And Microsoft are likely to face fierce opposition in trying to push this change through – including from the Competition Commission of the EU, who previously forced Microsoft to offer a choice of Web Browsers in the European edition of Windows 7.

OEMs would also be able to offer a BIOS feature to disable the service – a literal ‘off switch’ for Windows.

Ross Anderson of Light Blue Touchpaper, who has campaigned against similar, albeit less restrictive, moves before is stern in his verdict: -

“The extension of Microsoft’s OS monopoly to hardware would be a disaster, with increased lock-in, decreased consumer choice and lack of space to innovate. It is clearly unlawful and must not succeed.”

How do you store your books?

I'm wondering how you guys and girls store your books. As I share my room with my big bro, there's not much space for a real bookshelf, so put my books on a wooden screwed onto the wall.

But the bad thing is, there's a a lot of dust, plus it's not long/wide enough for my book collection that I have to put the books in horizontal position to fit in more books.

If I want to read the book on the lowest position I have to be careful not to move to much or else the upper books gonna fly down towards me.

Anyway, this is how I put my books.

I just bought a q6600 for my comp. after installing it, my comp would just shut down every 30 secs or so. going inside bios or loading windows it's the same. any idea?

Which netbooks suitable for me?

I'm now in university, currently studying software engineering.

Are netbooks suitable for programming or the cpu is just too slow? if the netbooks are good enough for programming, then which netbook is suitable for me who can only spare rm1.5k? Btw, I prefer 10 inch netbooks, as 9 is a little bit small. (eying acer aspire one d150)

One more thing, if doing serious/heavy programming, i will leave it to my desktop, so on my netbooks i just do some light programming stuff(python, vb.net, c).

my questions as follows:
1. where can i upgrade the cpu?
2. can i change the optical drive?

my phone keeps restarting

my nokia 3110 classic got a little problem here....a few days ago my phone keeps restarting itself until it shuts down on itself when i insert a memory card. After reformating the memory card, my phone didn't restart anymore....at least until i put some file inside (in this case some songs) which not more than 100mb and it starts doing the same thing again . Any solution to this problem??? thanks in advance
