Linux on iPhone

A milestone has been reached in iPhone firmware modification on Friday with the first alternative operating system for the hardware, Linux, now running on the device.

The first build created by Dev Team is now running on iPhone, iPhone 3G, and the original iPod touch in what's considered a "draft" version.

The software primarily includes the main Linux 2.6 kernel as well as rudimentary graphics, serial, and other functional drivers that are just enough to get a command line running when input is sent over the USB interface; the accelerometer, audio, networking and even the touchscreen have yet to receive any kind of software support.

Developers have also made a basic multi-boot front end known as OpeniBoot that lets users toggle between Apple's own operating system and an alternative platform.

While only just beginning, the project is the first known instance of a non-OS X operating system running on Apple's touchscreen devices where previous modifications have so far been limited to jailbreaking and unlocking handsets.

It also promises to expand in the future: the Dev Team is hoping to run Google's equally Linux-based but more complete Android mobile operating system on the iPhone and is searching for programmers to help with the project.

Source: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/11..._on_iphone.html
Official Links: http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/2008/11/...-on-iphone.html
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/62041396/linux-here-we-come

Guys,

I went to the SIS warehouse sales. They have a good deal on the Western Digital My Book Studio. They were selling the 500GB @ RM250, 1TB@ RM700. They had others too like My Passport Studio, My Book Home Edition 2TB@ RM790 only.

I lost the price list, I will be heading there later and will post once I get them.

On Apple products, I saw a Time Capsule, can't remember the price and capacity. They were also selling the Nano too, the previous gen and the current one but I don't think the current ones got offer. Some accessories like iLuv FM transmitter for RM79.

By the way, My Book Studio works well with Time Machine. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=374

Link to the warehouse sale: http://www.shoppingnsales.com/2008/11/14/2...arehouse-sales/

iPhone Carrier Connection Problem

People,

I have a very peculiar problem here. I am using iPhone 3G with FW 2.1, unlocked set from Singapore. I am using it virgin style (no jailbreak etc). I have been using for about a month without any issue until yesterday.

I was still using the phone(phone call and SMS) yesterday morning. The moment I went into my office, my phone showed "No Service". Which was weird. So I turned off and on the phone. Still the same.

Then I went to Settings>Carrier to search for the carrier. It searched and found all the providers "My Maxis, My Maxis 3G, My Celcom, My Celcom 3G, etc". So I selected My Maxis 3G. Once I select that, I will get "Network Lost - Your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in Settings". I have tried this with every other provider 3G and non 3G. Still the same.

So went to Apple Support page to try out their suggestions. One of their things was to toggle Airplane Mode. When I do that, the phone will start searching for new network. After 2-3 minutes later, it will detect back the network. But this connection will last between 10-30 minutes. I have tried resetting the phone and still the same thing.

I was pretty set that something is wrong with the phone and decided to restore it back once I get home. To my surprise, there is no problem connecting to Maxis at my housing area.

I thought it was fluke, played around with the phone for like an hour, still active connection. Still baffled, decided to restore the phone anyway, just in case. After restore, nothing was wrong. I was quite happy.

Stepped in to the office this morning. Same thing happen . The dreaded "No Service" is back.

I tried swapping SIM card with my friend. It's still the same. My SIM can work in his phone without a problem and his SIM card cannot work in mine. Both phone next to each other. I don't know what else to do.

iDesk

[attachmentid=619463]
Now that you have acquired all of the many Apple gadgets to come along in the past few years, you’re probably wishing you had the perfect place to organize them in an “Apple-like” fashion. The designer Paul Bichler has come to the rescue, by creating the exclusive iDesk, which is a neat platform that allows Apple users to keep their collection of MacBooks, iPod classics or nanos and even a 3G iPhone together for easy use. It is a workstation that clearly believes in keeping clutter out of sight. Completely compatible with Apple products, the wires of every gadget that play tangle with each other are kept out of site with style.
[attachmentid=619465]
And since white is the color that signifies cleanliness with elegance, the iDesk sports a seamless form drenched in white.
[attachmentid=619466]
Sporting a price tag of €2,200 ($3,100), this made-for Apple-users desk can be thoroughly explored in three-dimensional form on the product page.

Via: BornRich/iDesk

People,

Got a question to ask about purchasing software via App Store. I have bought some applications (paid) from App Store and installed to my iPod Touch. I am migrating to iPhone and would want to migrate these apps to the iPhone as I will be selling off the iPod Touch.

1) How many devices the application can be installed?
2) Can I transfer my purchase to my iPhone.

This document says just re-download if you lost the application
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702

Can this solution work? Or just sync, everything works fine and dandy?

Thanks

Apple releases Security Update 2008-002

Anybody downloaded already?

Apple Doc

QUOTE

Apple on Tuesday afternoon released a massive security update targeting various versions of its Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server operating systems, and patching over 40 previously discovered flaws.

Among the most heavily addressed areas are AppKit, the CUPS unix printing environment, Foundation, and X11 -- all of which contained vulnerabilities that could lead to arbitrary code execution, unexpected application termination, or grant attackers unauthorized access to various system components.

A number of password and authentication issues were also addressed in the areas of Kerberos, Podcaster, Preview and Printing. For example, Apple said Mac OS X Server's Podcast Producer included a component that provided passwords to a subtask through arguments, potentially exposing the passwords to other local users. Likewise, Preview and Printing services contained flaws that could expose the contents of an encrypted PDF without prompting the user for a password.

Meanwhile, an Image Raw-related glitch made it possible for a maliciously crafted image to lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

"A stack based buffer overflow exists in the handling of Adobe Digital Negative (DNG) image files. By enticing a user to open a maliciously crafted image file, an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution," Apple said. "This update addresses the issue through improved validation of DNG image files. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.5."

Other fixes address vulnerabilities in Apache, AFP, Application Firewall, CFNetwork, ClamAV, CoreFoundation, CoreServices, curl, Emacs, libc, mDNSResponder, notifyd, OpenSSH, pax archive utility, PHP, System Configuration, UDF, and Wiki Server. A full list is available here.

Security Update 2008-002 is available in three distinct distributions each for Mac OS X Client (Leopard, Universal, PPC) and Mac OS X Server (Leopard, Universal, PPC). Alternatively, you can run the Mac OS X Software Update mechanism located under the Apple menu to automatically receive the appropriate update for your system.
