HiSound Audio PAA-1Pro Review

Pros: Good sound stage, long ear bud stem, nice accessories and case
Cons: Fit might be an issue with people with smaller ear opening, no cable slider
I'd like to thank Jack Fu of HiSound Audio for sending me a review sample of both the PAA-1 Pro and the E212. I burned these in for around 20 hours,

Tested with

Galaxy S3 with PowerAmp & Noozxoide Eizo Rewire, HP 4410S notebook.

Audio Quality

I compared the PAA-1Pro to the following IEM's and ear bud: HiSound E212, Crossroads Bijou3, Generic Sony Ear buds. I unfortunately had a fit issue with the PAA-1Pro as I couldn't get a proper fit and only way to get the proper sound quality was by cupping my hands on my ear but as this is not very practical but this is what I did for the review. My wife on the other had had no fit issues. I feel the burn-in made quite a difference because out of the box, they didn't sound any better than my generic ear buds and was not on the level as the E212 without burn-in.

The PAA1-Pro has an overall pleasing sound signature for me in terms of the lows, mids and highs. All were well control and did not overshadow each other. There was a lack of instrument separation but this could be due to the limited burn in (20 hours) I had with them. I'm sure this will change over time as the 20 hours burn in had a difference. The sound stage had more width in it than it had depth. Maybe a 50 hour burn in could change that.

The sound quality of the PAA-1Pro is a lot better that my Sony ear buds but I liked the SQ of the E212 better and compared to the Bijou3, the PAA-1Pro had better wider sound stage but the Bijou3 had a deeper one. The Bijou3 is better in the sub bass section but in every other frequency range, I liked the PAA-1Pro better. I especially liked the highs as it was very clear, detailed and sparkled. There was no fatigue that you normally associate with this type of treble. I was quite impressed with the sound stage. This is the best ear buds I've ever tried out of the 5 I've owned.

I'll rate them as follows: E212>PAA-1Pro>Bijou3>Sony ear buds.

Conclusion

For the asking price of US$49, this is an item of very good value. If you are not into IEM's this is an excellent option to go with.

HiSound E212 IEM Review

I would like to thank HiSound Audio for this review unit. This is my first review of an IEM.

To begin with, I compared the E212 to Crossroads Bijou3 which costs about $10 more.

Tested with

HP ProBook 4410S, GS3 with Noozxoide & Poweramp

Accessories

3 pairs of red ear tips, cable manager, flexible phone case
The flexible phone case supplied are good. A cable clip instead of the cable manager would have been more useful IMHO.

Design

I've been using the Bijou3 for about a year and although they look like they have very steady cables, the right side of the cable gave way just after a year. The cables on the E212 looks thinner than the Bijou3 (but now I don't think thickness of a cable is relative to its durability), it is braided and shorter than the Bijou3 cable but I like the cable of the E212 as it is less tangle prone and is is a good length when using with my notebook. The Y split is also quite thick and looks durabable. The phone jack is oddly angled but I like it as it is easy to insert even on a mobile phone with thick casing. The stress relief on the phone end is twice the size of the Bijou3.

The phone body looks a bit cheap with a metallic plastic sleeve enclosing a shinny red body and comes supplied with 3 pairs of matching red tips. The best part of E212 for me is angle of the nozzle. This ensures a good fit and makes it sound vastly better than the Bijou3. More of the sound in the Sound quality section.

Isolation

The isolation of the E212 is about 30-50% better than the Bijou3 and it grips more firmly in the ear. This can be attributed to the nozzle design and the isolation is good. The sound quality is quite dependent on a good seal and a good seal is easy to achieve on the E212.

Sound Quality

The sound quality of the E212 is fantastic considering it is sold for about $38 on eBay and comparing it with the more expensive Bijou3. It is a lot better than Bijou3. The bass and the highs are much clearer and the sound stage a lot wider. This made picking out all the instruments in the song a lot more easier. EDM type music sounds great with these phones. Generally it was superior to the sound quality of Bijou3 in almost every attributes except maybe the very deep lows of the Bijou3. This is just after 20 hours of burn-in.

Value

I don't think it is easy to find any other IEM that is better than the E212 in it's price range. If so, I would like to know too.

They are so tiny for a 2.1 that I was too skeptical, for the sound they would give, but I was pretty wrong and yet again Altec Lansing proved themselves. Believe me for the size, of this entire unit, the quality and the bass produced was top notch, when I say bass I hope you understand, I would not mean jaw dropping thumping base, but decent and effective enough to be easily be felt in the song. The volume is more than enough to fill the small laptop area you would be working, infact at full, I can assure the volume is enough to fill a 10x10 room. Sound does not break or thrash at all at full volume, and the quality of voice is top notch. I seriously wonder how altech was able to fit that much quality in so tiny speaker. I played couple of 320kbps MP3s and listining to them was very soothing and enjoyable. Infact I was lying on my bed with these placed at the back of my head very close to my ears, and I could feel the quality of the music playing with every note very distinguishable , even at very low volume. Perfect for some light listening before bed time.

Coming to the price, I got these one just for 1200, from staples TGIP Mall Noida and I seriously feel they are worth. I also tried a model from Logitech, but was not at all impressed. People who want a decent portable 2.1 for laptop or for mobile, this is the one. Heck I would infact suggest to get this instead of any tiny 2.0 speakers out there, sure they are not as portable as say two small USB cups that one can carry in side there bag, but definatey sound far far far better than any portable 2.0 setup out there for laptops/mobiles/mp3 playes .....
