screen resolution issue

hello, i don't know if this is the right place or not, since its i'm pretty sure the problem lies with Vista.
previously, when i play any game it will automatically reduce its own resolution so the game will be full screen even its running lower than native resolution.
today, it doesn't automatically adjust the resolution, what i get now is a tiny little display in the center with black screen surrounding it, mouse is limited to the tiny box(pic attached). this applies to all game that runs in full screen.

any of the sifu knows how to solve it? the gfx is Intel GMA X3100. no setting changes were made in between as they happen today.
