The purpose of the statue is to educate people about history and not to cause hatred and conflict,” association president Huang Shu-chen (黃淑貞) said.

Japan should face up to its own history, she said, adding that she hopes the only two known comfort women surviving today would have a chance to receive a formal apology from Japan in their lifetime.

New Party spokesman Wang Ping-chung (王炳忠) also took part in the protest, but remained in a campaign truck throughout.

Some of the protesters threw eggs at the building, but most were prevented from doing so by a net that police had set up.

After about half an hour, a Japanese official came out to receive a letter of complaint from the KMT.

When asked to comment, the exchange association said that it had no comment on the issue.

At about 6pm, China Unification Promotion Party member Lee Cheng-lung (李承龍) and three other party members allegedly splashed paint on the front of the exchange association’s offices.

The four were detained by police for questioning.

The exchange association last month in a statement responded to the erection of the comfort woman statue, saying that all matters related to comfort women are handled through the Asian Women’s Fund.

The fund, established in 1994, offers compensation and medical support to former comfort women, along with a letter of apology from the Japanese government, it said.

The Japanese government understands that the reputation and dignity of former comfort women have been hurt, it said, adding that it has been handling the issue with sincerity and would continue to do so.

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/arc...9/11/2003700202

finally, someone admit that taiwanese are not huaren (华人). time to not celebrate chinese new year in taiwan.

fyi, taipei times is pro-taiwan independence.

QUOTE

Taiwanese should be considered ethnically distinct from Han Chinese, as a majority are more closely related to Aboriginal Austronesians and Pacific islanders, Taiwan’s leading hematologist and medical anthropology researcher said on Saturday.
Marie Lin (林媽利) made the comment at a book launch party for her biography, where colleagues and friends presented her with bouquets and a birthday cake to mark her turning 80 this year.

Decades of research using molecular technology to analyze human DNA and genetic markers had convinced her that most Taiwanese, as descendants of lowland Pingpu Aborigines (平埔族群) and highland Aborigines have mixed blood types, and are quite distinct from the genetic characteristics of the two main ethnic groups in China, the northern and southern Han Chinese.

Lin is internationally renowned for her pioneering genetic mapping and ethno-demographic studies of Taiwan’s population, with more than 150 papers to her credit.

“The main Hoklo Taiwanese and Hakka population in this nation have Pingpu and Aboriginal bloodlines in their ancestry from centuries of intermarriage, and the analysis of DNA and genetic markers reflects this new understanding of the close relationship between Taiwanese and Austronesians and Pacific islanders,” she said.

“Through the long history of ethno-cultural evolution on Taiwan, which was isolated from other main population centers, we can consider the result as forming a ‘Taiwanese people group,’ which is distinct from the Han Chinese people,” she said.

Genetic contributions from the Pingpu and Aboriginal bloodlines gave Taiwanese the traits of adventurous ambition, open hospitality to outsiders and a positive, sunny disposition in general, she said.

Lin has served as director of transfusion medicine and molecular anthropology at Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei — where she set up the nation’s first blood bank — since 2000, and been a professor at National Taiwan University’s Institute of Forensic Medicine since 2004.

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/arc...0/30/2003681322

He was scheduled to make a speech at the dinner as the guest-of-honour.

Senior Minister of State for Law and also MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Ms Indranee Rajah, told grassroots leaders and residents at the dinner that Mr Lee was not feeling well and had extended his apologies for not being at the event.

On behalf of the gathering, Ms Indranee wished Mr Lee a speedy recovery and hopes he feels better soon.

According to grassroots leaders, this is the first time Mr Lee missed the Tanjong Pagar division’s Lunar New Year dinner celebrations.

In Nov 2011, his daughter, Lee Wei Ling, revealed that Mr Lee has a neurological disease that is making it difficult for him to walk steadily.

She said that he is suffering from sensory peripheral neuropathy.

She said, “In my father’s case, sensory peripheral neuropathy has caused the conduction of sensation from his legs to his spinal cord to be impaired.
Pinoys tick “Malay” under race

QUOTE

During the population debate presented in the white paper, the Prime Minister said that the proportion of Malays in Singapore will not decline.

However, do you know that many Filipinos tick “Malay” under race when they apply for PR and citizenship?

This might make it seem like the proportions stay the same but actually it includes Pinoys too. You can see the link here where a Filipino blogger highlighted the confusions in the MOM’s Form 8:

This is exactly the same as why PAP is importing PRCs just because they are Chinese to replace the birth rate.

We are so different from them. What more, Filipinos are mainly Catholics, holding a different religion from Malay-Muslim Singaporeans.

Why is the government not changing Form 8 to make it clearer that Filipinos are not Malays? Even that Filipino blogger is also telling their fellow compatriots not to choose “Malay” as race in the form.

What is going on here?

.

QUOTE

Race…Been wondering which one to put a tick mark?

Under the ‘RACE’ field, there are only 5 items to choose: Caucasian, Chinese, Indian, Malay and Others.

And for Filipinos (true-blooded, with no significant traces of Caucasian, Chinese or other Asian or Western or even African blood in them), most of the time we will choose ‘Malay‘ as our race. This is what we learned at school. This is what our teachers taught us.

Yes, every Filipino is right…Malay race is the brown race. And, Filipinos belong to the brown race.

This is purely based on classifying the race on the color of the skin. A Caucasian is classified as belonging to the white race, an African as black, a Chinese belonging to the yellow race, and so on.

Furthermore, Wikipedia defines that “…many Filipinos consider the term “Malay” to refer to the indigenous population of the country as well as the indigenous population of neighboring countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.“ This is because we were taught that the ancestors of indigenous Filipinos came from Malaysia and Indonesia. Well, this is still being contested by some anthropologists in which there is another stronger claim that migration of early Filipinos came from Taiwan.

So much for that, let’s go back to the topic…which one to choose then?

The population of Singapore consists mainly of Chinese, Malay and Indian descent. Being once a part of Malaysia, Singapore has been settled by ethnic Malays since then. Now, together with the descendants of early Malay settlers and immigrants from Malaysia and Indonesia, they constitute the Malay population in Singapore.

So, Filipinos, next time you fill in something about ‘race’ in Singapore…choose ‘Others‘ instead.

another PAP government conspiracy to lower the population of malay muslim and increase the number of christian malay

http://www.tremeritus.com/2013/02/15/pm-sa...-change-really/

Sinkies youths no use condom during first time

QUOTE

SINGAPORE - Singaporean youths who were still studying were 20 times less likely to use condoms during their first sexual experience as compared to those who have completed their education, according to the latest Face of Global Sex Report.

On the contrary, as a global statistic, youths still studying were on average 1.5 times more likely to use a condom during their first sexual experience.

This startling finding, which would benefit from further research, demonstrates the importance of early sexual education and planning for first sexual experience in order to ensure condom use at first sex and on-going positive sexual health practices.

"This worrying statistic about Singaporean youths, especially students, shows that a lot more needs to be done to positively guide and influence Singapore youths in sexual education and practices. Parents, teachers and peer influencers need to step-up to take a more pro-active role in sharing information about safe sex," said Mr Nikhilesh Kalra, marketing director at Reckitt Benckiser Malaysia and Singapore.

The Face of Global Sex Report 2012 was developed with the aim of investigating the correlation between using a condom at first sex and its impact on future sexual behaviour. The survey, which reached out to over 25,000 respondents in 37 countries, found that those who used a condom at first sex enjoy better sexual health and well-being.

Dr Freya Sonenstein, from the Center for Adolescent Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, commented in the report's overview: "This report finds that one of the best predictors of condom use among sexually active adults is whether or not the adults began their sexual activity using condoms. Further, adults in these 37 countries who managed to never have an unintended pregnancy or STI were also more likely to have used a condom the first time that they had sex."

"It is important for us to understand the characteristics of young people who tend to protect themselves at first intercourse because they are the individuals who will be more likely to have intended children and not be burdened by diseases," added Dr Sonenstein.

Amongst 506 Singaporeans surveyed, it was found that one in two Singaporeans (50.1 per cent) used condoms at first sex, while 62.5 per cent of Singaporeans used condoms during the last occasion they had sex.

Findings also indicated that Singaporeans experience first sex at an average of 22 years, compared to respondents in Columbia and Brazil that report the youngest ages of first intercourse at around age 17. In the region, Malaysia and Indonesia report the oldest ages, around 23, on average.

http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC12...condoms--Report

TL:DR: Sinkies love to pancut dalam

What lead to Assam violence

QUOTE

The death toll from ethnic violence in Assam rose to 40 on Wednesday, as military reinforcements were called in to quell more than four days of clashes.
The clashes pit members of the ethnic Bodo community against Muslim settlers who mostly came from the former East Pakistan before it became Bangladesh in 1971.

The violence broke out in the district of Kokrajhar when two Muslim student leaders were shot and injured, leading to revenge strikes on Bodo groups.

The main cause of the present clash between Bodo tribals and immigrant Muslims is control over land.

Kokrajhar and Chirang were predominantly a Bodo tribal majority areas till nineties. But there were migration of immigrant Muslims to the Gossaigaon sub division areas in Kokrajhar district since beginning of 90s. Immigrant Muslim population has increased many fold in Gossaigaon sub division in last two decades.

Immigrant Muslims procured lands from many Bodos in Gossaigaon areas and outnumbered Bodos in many villages. Slowly , there were migrations of immigrant Muslims (mainly agricultural labourers and daily wage earners) to Kokrajhar town areas.

The control over land by immigrant Muslims in Bodo heartland and increasing population of immigrant Muslims in Kokrajhar and other districts of BTC created fear psychosis among Bodos.

In 2003, Bodoland Territorial Council ( BTC) was created with signing the BTC accord between Assam Govt., Central Govt and BLT ( a militant outfit which spearheaded separate Bodoland state movement). BLT was disbanded with singing of BTC accord.

Hagrama Mahilary who once headed BLT formed a political outfit and won the council election. BTC composes of four districts of Kokrajhar , Chirang , Baska and Udalguri. There were huge oppositions from non Bodo against creation of BTC. The non Bodos alleged that Bodos would create trouble for non Bodos living in BTC.

There have been allegations from non Bodos that BTC administration under Hagrama Mahilary neglected non Bodos and immigrant Muslims in BTC severely opposed the functioning of BTC. The immigrant Muslim also opposed vehemently the separate Bodo state demands.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/A...le1-895836.aspx

Utusan: Singapore has big plans for GE13

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Umno is playing a dangerous game of lies by stoking up fears that could split Malaysia along racial lines in its bid to win over Malay voters at the polls, two Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders said today.

Their remarks come after a Mingguan Malaysia columnist Awang Selamat accused the Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) of having ties with Chinese-dominant Malaysian party, DAP, to influence the 13th general elections here due within a year.

Mingguan Malaysia is the weekend edition of Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia and "Awang Selamat" is a pseudonym adopted by the paper's editorial team that often reflect the ruling party's views.

The DAP's Lim Kit Siang (picture) claimed today that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's uncertainty in winning the next general election has resulted in "desperate" tactics by Umno leaders and strategists.

Awang had accused Lim of being one of former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew's "trusted men" and former press secretary.

The DAP national parliamentary leader denied Awang's allegations and described them as "downright lies."

"I was never involved in PAP during my years as a reporter in Singapore from 1961 to 1964... I was never press secretary to Kuan Yew although I worked for a period in the press section of the Ministry of Culture," Lim said in a statement today.

He said it was not the first time Umno has raised such unsubstantiated allegations, pointing out that Utusan and other media linked to the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) have accused the DAP of conspiring to create a Christian Malaysia state, appoint a Christian prime minister and abolish the existing constitutional monarchy system led by the Malay sultans.

Lim added that Umno/BN cybertroopers had even claimed that he was responsible for the May 13 racial riots in 1969, while he was never even in Kuala Lumpur at the time.

"In desperation, Umno leaders and strategists including Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed have now resorted to a two-prong offensive- firstly, playing the race card to create racial suspicion and distrust to win the Malay heartland in utter disregard of Mahathir's Bangsa Malaysia and Najib's 1 Malaysia concepts; and secondly, a vilification and demonization campaign against DAP and Pakatan Rakyat leaders," Lim said.

He said Umno's heightened attacks against opposition leaders proved that PM Najib is not confident about winning the next elections.

Attacks against PR leaders have intensified ahead of the next GE, with many pro-BN mainstream media publishing lopsided reports of events.

"The 13th GE is going to be the dirtiest election in the half-century history of Malaysia," said Lim.

But PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar believes Umno's "divide and rule" strategy may not necessarily result in a GE win, saying that a mere ten per cent voter swing in PR's favour would impact BN's position.

"What people forget is that last GE, out of 139 BN seats, 56 were won with a majority of less than 10 per cent, and a 10 per cent swing in PR's favour would negatively impact BN's rule.

"Out of this 56 BN marginal seats, 14 are from Sabah and Sarawak, while the remaining 22 are multi-ethnic , in Peninsular malaysia - with less than 70 per cent Malay voters," she told The Malaysian Insider.

"Their true and tested racial tirade against their political opponents won't be as effective as previous years, as more Malaysians and Malays gain access to new media.

"Clearly, Najib's just a false democrat bent on playing the same old game as his UMNO counterparts, and that's sorely disappointing," the Lembah Pantai MP added.

Singapore was a part of Malaysia until it was kicked out of the federation in 1963. Ties between the two nations have been tense over the years, notably during Lee's administration of the republic while Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was Malaysia's prime minister until 2003.

The bilateral ties that warmed significantly after Datuk Seri Najib Razak took office in 2009, however, has cooled again in recent weeks after several right-wing Malay groups accused three Singapore envoys of taking part in a chaotic street demonstration led by electoral reform group Bersih.

Najib has publicly denounced the April 28 demonstration as an attempt to overthrow his government.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...pr-leaders-say/

QUOTE

Security forces flooded western Myanmar Saturday to prevent further outbreaks of sectarian violence between Buddhists and Muslims which have left at least seven dead, according to state media.

Police and military units deployed to Rakhine state - which borders Bangladesh - had "systematically controlled'' unrest, which erupted Friday and saw hundreds of Buddhist villagers' homes set ablaze, state television said.

"Stability has been restored since this morning.''

Unrest flared Friday when at least four Buddhists were killed in riots in Rakhine, home to large numbers of Rohingya, a stateless Muslim group described by the UN as one of the world's most persecuted minorities.

A second wave of violence swept through remote villages early Saturday, as more Rakhine homes were torched forcing villagers to flee to temporary shelters in Maungdaw town, according to government officials.

Seven people were killed, 17 wounded and nearly 500 houses destroyed during the two days of violence, the state media report said without elaborating on the identity of the victims.

Tensions have soared in Rakhine since 10 Muslims on a bus were killed by an angry Buddhist mob on Sunday, believing mistakenly that the perpetrators of the recent rape and murder of a Rakhine woman were onboard.

It was unclear what sparked the most recent outbreak of violence, with government forces and the Rohingyas trading accusations.

Myanmar, which considers the Rohingya as foreigners and not one of the nation's ethnic groups, has an estimated 750,000 Rohingya, living mainly in Rakhine, according to the UN.

Another one million or more are believed to live in exile in other countries.

Two government officials said armed Rohingya had burned Rakhine villages in the early hours of Saturday.

"They came from the neighbouring country by boats,'' one of the officials told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity, and referring to Bangladesh.

State television later announced that navy ships had been patrolling Myanmar's waters since Saturday morning to head off any further boats carrying members of the Muslim minority.

Rohingya representatives said five of the ethnic group had been killed by government forces who then set fire to Rohingya homes.

"The violence started because security forces opened fire on a group of Rohingyas (on Friday),'' said Abu Tahay, head of the political bureau of the National Democratic Party for Development, which represents Rohingya.

Rohingyas claim decades of persecution by a government that they say views them with suspicion.

Activists say forced labour is common and Rohingyas face discriminatory practices including travel restrictions, limits on family size, and a refusal to issue them passports that leaves them effectively stateless.

Expressing "profound concern'' following the riots, Human Rights Watch deputy Asia director Phil Robertson said tension between Rakhines and Rohingyas had been stoked by a "systematic government policy'' to discriminate against the ethnic group.

Many in Myanmar view the Rohingya with hostility and believe they do not belong in the country.

"We want to say clearly that Rohingya are not one of the Myanmar ethnic nationalities,'' Ko Ko Gyi, a leader of so-called 88 generation student uprising told AFP.

"We do not accept any kind of terrorism. We have a duty to protect any Myanmar citizen that is harmed whatever their religion or ethnicity.''

The violence threatens to overshadow reconciliation efforts following a series of dramatic political reforms that came after the end of almost half a century of military rule last year.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/29...efs-up-security

[addedon]June 10, 2012, 7:14 pm[/addedon]kesian rohingya pipu. still stateless and not considered burmese just because they have bangla look.

http://www.twf.org/News/Y2003/0630-Burma.html

SingTel to slash local data bundles from July

hahahahah..............singaporeans no longer can enjoy unlimited data plan already.

QUOTE

SINGAPORE: SingTel will be slashing local data bundles for all its new and recontracting 3G and 4G mobile subscribers from July.

All subscribers currently enjoy a blanket offer of 12 gigabytes (GB) for all SingTel's data plans.

Apart from its premium plan, the telco will be reducing data bundles to between two GB to four GB. Additional data will be charged S$5.35 per additional GB.

In return, SingTel said it will offer more generous SMS bundles and higher data speeds.

Prices for the telco's subscription plans remain unchanged.

Based on current usage patterns, SingTel said 90 per cent of subscribers should not incur higher charges, as their data consumption does not exceed the new bundles.

Meanwhile, SingTel will be offering Singapore's first 4G services for consumer smartphones this July.

This will be offered to consumers when they purchase a 4G-enabled handset with a SingTel 4G plan.

The first 4G-enabled smartphones available in Singapore are HTC One XL, LG Optimus LTE and Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE.

SingTel expects its 4G network to be fully rolled out throughout Singapore in early 2013.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1205521/1/.html

singaporean invented yee sang

QUOTE

But I am afraid the Malaysian press have really shot themselves in the foot with arguments like "The custom of eating yee sang during Chinese New Year belongs to the Cantonese and given that people of this dialect are mostly from Kuala Lumpur, it must have originated from here,". (7). I am sure you will agree that Singapore has a sizeable population of Cantonese who exert a great influence on our culture. The same paper also followed it up with another article headlined "My uncle created Yusheng" (8) where a 77 year old lady claims that she remembers eating Yu Sheng as a child and that it was invented by her uncle, Tham Mui Kai in the 1920's or 30's. Incidentally, Chef Tham is one of the Four Heavenly Kings who introduced the modern Yu Sheng in the Chinese New Year of 1964 in his then newly opened Lai Wah Restaurant. Such claims are easily debunked because Chef Hooi who was 13 years old when he joined Cathay Restaurant in 1950 remembers Chef Tham as a young man in his teens then. According to Chef Hooi, Chef Tham could not be more than 10 years older then he is. The other fact we can establish is that Chef Tham died in 1996 in his seventies. So by doing a few simple calculations, Chef Tham would have been at most 23 years old in 1950, (Chef Tham could not be more than 10 years older then Chef Hooi) making his birth-year 1926 at the earliest. By the end of the 1930's he was at most 13 years old. How could he have possibly invented Yu Sheng in the 20's or 30's?

TLDR version: http://ieatishootipost.sg/2012/02/history-...f-yu-sheng.html

QUOTE

The authorities are being called upon to immediately investigate the action by a group of neighbouring nationals who were involved in distributing opposition party flyers amounting to incitement at the squatter village in Kampung Saujana Baru, Pasir Gudang. Villager Salim Aziz, 50, said at noon on Jan 1, cars with red number plates from the neighbouring country were seen accompanying an opposition group who were distributing flyers.

“The opposition party members went door to door in the village and distributed the flyers and party newspapers and they were accompanied by cars from the neighbouring country with red number plates,” he told Bernama today. Salim, the village Umno branch head, questioned the foreigners’ involvement in local politics.
He said it was the first time such an incident occurred in the squatter village and an unofficial complaint was made to an officer in the Seri Alam police headquarters after that day.

A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous as he was not allowed to make media statements, advised the villagers to record the foreign cars’ registration numbers.
“We also advise them to lodge a police report immediately,” he said. Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang Umno committee member Norwati Abdul Manaf who had highlighted the issue said, the opposition was attempting to wrest the Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat, presently held by Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin who is head of the Umno division there as well.

Norwati said the opposition was trying to influence the residents of eight squatter villages in the Pasir Gudang constituency by twisting the issue on village land applications, which have yet to be resolved until now. “There are 15,000 voters in the villages. The opposition have entered the villages in their attempt to topple BN, without us being aware of it,” said Norwati who is also an officer of the Johor Special Affairs Department.

DAP has brought its main leaders like Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng and Karpal Singh to speak at the Johor Jaya state constituency which comes under the Pasir Gudang parliamentary constituency, she added. Tan Cher Puk from MCA is the current Johor Jaya assemblyman and Permas, also under Pasir Gudang, is held by a representative from MIC, she said.

- Bernama

http://www.freemalaysiakini.com/?p=9531

That is how I contribute best to Umno,” said the singer, who is also known as Irwan Syah Abdullah.

Admitting he may not be the “winnable” candidate the leadership is looking for, he added: “I prefer to work behind the scene.”

The youthful-looking 63-year-old, known for his 70s hits like Maafkanlah and Menjelang Hari Raya, was a big hit with delegates and visitors to the Umno general assembly and was stopped by many Wanita members who wanted to take photographs with him.

A familiar face in many election campaigns, DJ Dave said he was confident Umno and Barisan Nasional would emerge a stronger force at the next general election.

He urged young Malaysians to put their trust in the party to bring changes to the country.

“Umno has weathered many storms and it has always delivered,” he said, calling on party members to stay united in the face of the opposition onslaught.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...0769&sec=nation

Seager?
Lee Kuan Yew suffers from neurological disease

QUOTE

Singapore's Lee fighting nerve disease: daughter

(AFP) – 4 hours ago

SINGAPORE — Singapore's founding leader Lee Kuan Yew is fighting a neurological disease that is making it difficult for him to walk steadily, his daughter revealed.
Lee, who turned 88 in September, suffers from sensory peripheral neuropathy, his physician daughter Lee Wei Ling, director of the National Neuroscience Institute of Singapore, wrote in her weekly Sunday Times newspaper column.

"In my father's case, sensory peripheral neuropathy has caused the conduction of sensation from his legs to his spinal cord to be impaired. This makes his walking unsteady, as many Singaporeans have already noticed," she wrote.

The column, which deals with a wide range of issues, is closely followed for glimpses into the private life of Singapore's most influential family.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is the columnist's elder brother.

Lee Kuan Yew retired from the cabinet after general elections in May but continues to travel overseas and remains a member of parliament, a post he has held since 1955. He served as prime minister from 1959 to 1990.

"His day-to-day condition now fluctuates. On some days he is fairly steady and on other days his balance is poor. The problem is limited to the sensory nerves outside his central nervous system," his daughter wrote.

"His brain and muscles are working normally. But being deprived of sensation from his legs means he finds it a challenge to balance. Thus his unsteady walk," she said.
The patriarch, however, is determined to fight the disease and now practises walking on a treadmill at home three times a day without fail.

"I have no doubt my father will fight this disease for as long as he thinks he can contribute to Singapore," his daughter said.

"I think with medication and simple precaution, he can continue to be of service to his country and the world."

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/artic...97a9409817b.1b1

Bak Kut Teh was invented by Teochews in Singapore?

DEFUQ? Bak Kut Teh was invented by Teochews in Sinkapork?

Any Hokkiens and Klangites wanna refute that?

QUOTE

I was pleasantly surprised to find out last week that Bak Kut Teh is a Singapore invention too! At least according to Mr Frankie Gwee from this Bak Kut Teh stall. He told me in no uncertain terms that Bak Kut Teh actually started around the Clarke Quay/River Valley area back in the post war years. Back then, the Chinese coolies used to offload sacks of rice and other goods which was backbreaking work. The two rival clans were the Teochews and the Hokkiens who would compete with each other for work. Since the men needed to eat stuff that would boost their energy, one enterprising Teochew man started selling soup made from boiling Pork Bones with garlic and pepper. Thus was born the Bak Kut Teh. And yes, it is a Teochew invention. Of course, the Hokkiens did not want to lose out, so they also came up with their own version of Bak Kut Teh which was darker and used other herbs. (Ok, I think I might have just reignited the clan rivalry between Teochews and Hokkiens with this!)

http://ieatishootipost.sg/2007/06/outram-p...-teh-short.html

QUOTE

In my previous post, I stated that Bak Kut Teh was a Teochew invention. That point needs to be clarified. As far as the peppery version of Bak Kut Teh is concerned, yes, it is the Teochews who invented it. However, pork bone soup probably is Hokkien in origin because of the fact that we Teochews don't call meat "Bak", we call it "Nek". So the name Bak Kut Teh would point to a Hokkien origin. However, the practice of serving Gong Fu Tea is Teochew in origin as the Teochews are famous for being the biggest tea drinkers in China. So what we really have here is a dish that is uniquely Singaporean in that it was born out of the fusion of two of the two major dialect groups who migrated here.

http://ieatishootipost.sg/2011/07/seng-hua...an-origins.html

S'poreans accused by US of selling bomb parts

slowpoke news but im surprised that kiasu infidels supply bombs to iran.

QUOTE

WASHINGTON — The United States charged four Singaporeans and an Iranian with illegally exporting US-made radio equipment to Iran that ended up in roadside bombs targeting coalition forces in Iraq. The United States has requested the extradition of the Singaporeans, who were arrested on Monday in Singapore, but the Iranian is still at large and lives in Iran, the Justice Department said.

Three Singapore-based companies and an Iranian company were also charged in the indictment, which accuses Iranian national Hossein Larijani of masterminding the illegal export of 6,000 radio frequency modules from a Minnesota-based company to Iran. The modules have encryption capabilities and a range that allows them to transmit data wirelessly as far as 40 miles (65 kilometers) when configured with a specialized antenna.

At least 16 were discovered by US forces in Iraq being used in remote detonation systems for IEDs (improvised explosive devices), which, according to the indictment, caused roughly 60 percent of American combat casualties in Iraq between 2001 and 2007.

"Yesterday, authorities in Singapore arrested Wong Yuh Lan (Wong), Lim Yong Nam (Nam), Lim Kow Seng (Seng), and Hia Soo Gan Benson (Hia), all citizens of Singapore, in connection with a US request for extradition," the Justice Department said."The remaining individual defendant, Hossein Larijani, is a citizen and resident of Iran who remains at large."Charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, smuggling, illegal export of goods from the United States to Iran, illegal export of defense articles from the United States, false statements and obstruction of justice.

Some of the defendants were also charged in a separate fraud conspiracy involving the export of sensitive military technology to Singapore and Hong Kong -- radio antennas for use in fighter jets. US Attorney Ronald Machen said the defendants misled US companies into exporting parts that ended up in IEDs on the battlefield in Iraq. "We hope for a swift response from Singapore to our request for extradition," he added.

"In each transaction, the defendants allegedly told the Minnesota firm that Singapore was the final destination of the goods," the indictment said. "The defendants also caused false documents to be filed with the US government, in which they claimed that a telecommunications project in Singapore was the final end-use for the modules.
"In reality, each of the five shipments was routed from Singapore to Iran via air cargo. The alleged recipient of all 6,000 modules in Iran was Larijani, who had directed Wong, his employee in Singapore, to order them."

Assistant Attorney General for National Security Lisa Monaco said the case "underscores the con tinuing threat posed by Iranian procurement networks seeking to obtain US technology through fraud and the importance of safeguarding that technology."US officials regularly accuse Iran of meddling in the politics of Baghdad's Shiite-led government, and training and backing militant groups that target US troops in the south of Iraq.

Admiral Mike Mullen, then the top US military officer, said in July that Iran was stepping up its support for Shiite militants in Iraq, supplying them with more sophisticated weapons that were being used against American forces. Analysts have voiced concern that Tehran's ability to interfere could increase as a result of President Barack Obama's announcement last week that all US troops will be pulled out of Iraq by the end of this year. "These cases are the product of vigorous, cooperative law enforcement focused on denying to Iran items that endanger our coalition forces on the battlefield in Iraq," said Under Secretary of Commerce Eric Hirschhorn.
"We will continue aggressively to go after such perpetrators -- no matter where they operate -- to guard against these types of threats."

US Ambassador to Singapore, David Adelman, praised the cooperation of different departments both within the United States and with the Singaporean authorities.
"Twenty-first century law enforcement is most effective when countries work collaboratively as evidenced by this strong, cooperative effort between the US and Singapore," he said. The Singapore embassy in Washington declined comment on the matter.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/artic...a660a4a76c7.2e1
