Just a warning to all Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Users.

Do NOT install the YTL YES USB-dongle just yet.

The Embedded files are only meant for 10.6 Snow Leopard (supposedly).

If you install it on a Leopard (non-snow) machine, you'll be stuck with an unlaunchable connect program, but what's more $%^@#$^$!!! is that the uninstaller (to supposedly remove the added files) also doesn't work and complaints of a wrong version.

Am trying to remove the files manually by the uninstall script file embedded in the contents of the uninstaller pkg...

Fingers crossed...
Hi all,

after being stuck on 1.1.4 for more than a year, i finally went 2.2.1, only to find out that there is an entirely alien way that numbering format and caller ID is handled.

Have installed CallerID fix and FormatFix for 2.2, but just wondering if any local uber iphone hacker has made our malaysian numbers display more pretty than the Cydia packages ?

Most appreciative if someone can share their fully customised XXXXXX.phoneformat file ?

thanks!
The truth behind Power ratings

Lets have a start to clear some confusion here on what those numbers REALLY mean ...

@empire23 , your comments/inputs are also most appreciated here.

There are some who believe that an amp rated 15W can in no way damage a speaker thats say rated at 150W. But this is far from the truth...

Lets start with Amp wattage. When the manufacturer rates their amps at say ... 50W (R.M.S.) ....
It really means that the Amp is capable of outputting 50W of power at a CERTAIN QUALITY.... meaning Total-harmonic-distortion(THD) of 0.02% for example... or -XXdB.

Hypothetically speaking, the same Amplifier could very well output 500W (or more) of power to the speakers, but the signal would be serverly distorted.
In the case if the input signal was an as pure as possible sine-wave (nice curvy smooth swings up and down).... the Amplifier's output would very well be a nasty looking square wave (this clipping phenomenon) but its still nevertheless could be 500W (R.M.S.) power (@say 75% THD for example) being sent to the speakers!

To quote a cousin of mine (who is also a super audio buff and electronics geek, and working on Defence sciences and Electronic Warfare), "An Amplifier is like a water tap holding back high pressure... The more you open the tap, the more water will gush out until something breaks ... maybe burst the pipe ? destroy the tap ? , or the strong water pressure damaging the end-target (which is the speakers in this analogy)."

The next thing would be why certain Amps with high Wattage rating seem so anaemic and lazy when driving certain loudspeakers. Until recently, alot of Japanese Amps are guilty of such shortcomings. This actually has to do with current delivery and the Amp's output Impedance.

Slight digression .. a Loudspeaker's sensitivity is usually rated in terms of how much Volts (usually 2.83V for a 8 Ohm speaker) at a distance of 1 meter, will give XX dB of sound level output. aka "Loudspeaker Sensitivity".

For simplicity , Lets assume we are working with only real impedances here ... so impedance = resistance. Capacitance and Inductance are ignored.

Ohms's Law: V = I x R ,
V= volts, I = current (in Amps, A ) R = Resistance ( in Ohms).

Lets see how we can measure the current needed to "put 2.83V across the speaker terminals " of a typical 8 Ohm loudspeaker for an Amp that has a high output impedance compared to an Amp with a low output inpedance.

Case 1: Amp with a Output Impedance of say .... 2 Ohms. Lets call this "Ra" while the loudspeaker's impedance is "RL"
Taking a holistic view of the amp's output circuit, we have , V = I x ( Ra + RL) , where (Ra + RL) is the total impedance in series of the complete circuit.

So to drive the loudspeaker to make a noise of XX dB, the amp needs to put 2.83Volts across RL. But due to the Amp's output impedance of 2 Ohms in this example, the Amp actually needs to crank out V[case 1] = I x ( 2 + 8) , but we know that I x 8 must be equal to 2.83 , hence I = 2.83/8 = 0.354 A
Therefore, V[case 1] = 0.354 x (2+8) = 3.54 Volts.

Case 2: Amp has an output impedance of only say... 0.1 Ohms.
Same method of calculation... Current needed to put 2.83Volts across the loudspeaker is 0.354A to make the loudspeaker make the same noise level of XX dB. But now, Ra is only 0.1 Ohms whereas RL is still at 8 Ohms.
Therefore, V[case 2] = 0.354 x (0.1 + 8) = 2.87 Volts.

Conclusion , for Amp-1 to make the loudspeaker boogie at XX dB, it needs out pump out 3.54Volts , compared to Amp-2 which only needs to output 2.87 Volts. If the Amp needs to put out a higher voltage, it means it has to work harder. So there u have it. Amplifier power ratings demystified!!

Moral of the story, you can have a 100W rated amp but if its got high output impedance .. its a whimpy amp (coz maybe only 60% of its wattage is delivered to the speakers)
Same rule applies, u can have a very conservatively rated amp of say 25W but its built with very low output impedance, it can be a very strong (efficient) amp (say if it can deliver 95% of its wattage to the speakers) !

This problem is even more pronounced with loudspeakers with lower impedances (i.e. 4 Ohms or so)

The sad part is that most electronics manufacturers will proudly boast the Wattage ratings .. but almost never reveal the Amp's output impedance.

So what determines a loudspeaker that's " hard" or "easy" to drive ? Its a combo of its impedance and its sensitivity .. but this should warrants a separate topic/thread by itself...

hi all,

Managed to find from overseas on Fire-wire cable that will use up the FW800 port that is usually wasted (unless u got FW800 devices).
This cable will let you plug in regular Firewire400 devices into the FW800 port (since its backward compatible anyways) but the cable is a real pain in the a** to find.

Its a 9-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable, also known as a "Firewire Bilingual cable".

More details below:

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/747334

if anyone knows where we can get this cable locally ... please do share the info for the benefit of Mac users! thanks!

<have tried all of Lowyat, all of pasar road, and the usual PC/Mac shops ... cannot find so far!>

Might any turntable/vinyl gurus here have experience with the Goldring GR2 Turntable ?
I read that it actually comes with a Rega tonearm paired to its own Goldring MM cartridge.

How does is stack up against the Rega P3 or some vintage LP12 ?

3rd party SMS managers

iPhone 1.1.4 reporting in here...

Currently, I've tested 2 3rd Party SMS managers that can let you "forward" SMS.

Since 1.1.3+ FW, the multiple recipient feature available but still no way to forward SMSes.

SMSd by Amrut Joshi
Version 0.2.1
From: Installer

This version is meant for FW 1.1.2 and older. In order for it to work with FW 1.1.3+ , one needs to add some "symlinks" in the /var/root/library folder as follows:

/var/root/Library/AddressBook/    --> /var/mobile/Library/AddressBook/
/var/root/Library/CallHistory/   --> /var/mobile/Library/CallHistory/
/var/root/Library/SMS/   --> /var/mobile/Library/SMS/

Full description for workaround is at:
http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41891

SMSd v0.2.3beta1 is supposedly able to handle 1.1.3+ iPhones, but when I tested it, the "conversation" section keeps crashing the app.

Anyways, full info on SMSd is at http://amrut.joshi.googlepages.com/

weTool by some chinese dude

Current version is 0.3.9

Works like a charm with 1.1.3+ iPhones. (so far).

Can be found via Installer provided you have the "modmyifone.com/..." which should be already included in your Installer sources, or "app.weiphone.com/installer" source.

All the above info was posted some time back in the older "iPhone club v.X" threads... but here it is again.. hope it helps the newbies into the wonderful world of iPhone.
