College Admissions Directors Finally Admit It

So much for ethics--admissions directors admit they're not out to recruit the best and brightest students, but rather the richest, according to the 2011 Survey of College and Admissions Directors.

Conducted by Inside Higher Ed in August and September, the study drew responses from 462 top directors at nonprofit colleges and universities, who revealed that "finding the right fit" is more about recruiting "full-pay" students who aren't in need aid than providing a rare opportunity for low-income applicants without resources.

With battered endowments and declining government aid, more than half the admissions offers at public research universities and more than a third at four-year colleges feel pressure from administrators, trustees, and fund raisers to recruit more out-of-state and international students since they tend to pay higher fees.

Sadly, 10% of admissions directors at four-year public colleges and nearly 20% at private liberal arts schools said many full-pay admittants had lower grades and test scores than other applicants; more than a quarter of admissions directors likewise revealed they're being pressured by senior-level executives to admit minority students, children of alumni, athletes, and international students--a practice that harkens back to the University of Illinois scandal that made headlines two years ago.

David A. Hawkins, director of public policy and research at the National Association for College Admission Counseling tells the Times that "as institutional pressures mount, between the decreased state funding, the pressure to raise a college's profile, and the pressure to admit certain students, we're seeing a fundamental change in the admissions process ... there's now a different dynamic that places a lot of emphasis on marketing."

But whether it's a product of hard times or a sign of failed leadership, Inside Higher Ed's findings are deeply troubling and speak to the American college system's inability to make the grade, both for students and parents, who the study found are "significantly worried" about how they'll shoulder the burden of such exorbitant tuition costs.

Business Insider

According to this survey:
http://www.insidehighered.com/news/survey/admissions2011

World Tallest Tower To Be Built In Saudi Arabia

THE record for the world's tallest tower is set to be smashed yet again... by the Bin Laden family.
The new skyscraper will measure one kilometre high and will be located in Saudi Arabia. The tower will outdo Gulf neighbour Dubai, which inaugurated its own record-breaking skyscraper the 828m Burj Khalifa less than two years ago.

The Saudis awarded a more than $1 billion contract for a spire, to be named the Kingdom Tower. It will have a Four Seasons hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and offices, encompassing, in all, about half a million square metres.

Kingdom Holding Co, the investment firm headed by billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, said it signed a $1 billion deal with the Saudi Binladen Group to build Kingdom Tower on the outskirts of the Red Sea city of Jeddah.

The Saudi construction giant is owned by the family of Osama bin Laden. The family disavowed the slain al-Qaeda terror group leader years ago.

"We intend Kingdom Tower to become both an economic engine and a proud symbol of the Kingdom's economic and cultural stature in the world community,'' Talal Al Maiman, a board member of KHC and the Jeddah Economic Co, a KHC-affiliate that signed the deal with the Binladen Group, said.

"We envision Kingdom Tower as a new iconic marker of Jeddah's historic importance as the traditional gateway to the holy city of Mecca.''

The tower, designed by Chicago-based Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, is the first phase of the planned Kingdom City, a sprawling, $20 billion, two-square mile urban development project first announced in 2008 as the global financial crisis was squeezing world markets.

It is one of several ambitious mega-ventures in the kingdom.

http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/worlds-...0-1226107191435

The Muslims are at it again with the obsession of building the world's tallest. This is where they waste all their precious oil resources and make their country go broke. As always once the oil runs dry, they can always look to migrate elsewhere to repeat the whole process once again.

ASTROTurfing<definition> Exists In Malaysia?

Do you think Asstro Turfing Happens in Malaysia?

What are astroturfs?
A brand of synthetic carpeting designed to look like natural grass. [Wikipedia]

Definition of Astroturfing:
Astroturfing is a form of propaganda whose techniques usually consist of a few people attempting to give the impression that mass numbers of enthusiasts advocate some specific cause. In the UK this technique is better known as "rent-a-crowd" after the successful "rent-a-crate" business.

Take for example you want to do an online survey or vote but you it's just a ploy to tell the public what you want them to believe.

Won't you just create lots of dupes and fake accounts to VOTE for your choice of answer and say, "See, this is the public's choice".
But actually your voters are all fake crowds?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing

LOL.... ASTRO. Name sounds like fake crowd.

Do you think our media has lots of ASTROTURFING happening nowadays?

Afghans Now Want To Flood Australia

Australian Government Warns Of Afghan Refugees Flooding

QUOTE

AS Afghans in Malaysia plan to formally plead for sympathy from Julia Gillard, the founder of an Afghan human rights group warned that increasing lawlessness in Afghanistan could prompt a flood of asylum-seekers hoping for safe haven in Australia.

Niamatullah Ibrahimi, co-director of the Kabul-based Afghanistan Watch, yesterday said it was clear the insurgent Taliban was making strategic gains and, with the US beginning a drawdown of troops, hopes for a peaceful and democratic Afghanistan were receding.

Afghan asylum-seekers have long travelled to Australia by boat, and since the Australia-Malaysia refugee plan was signed this week, swapping 800 asylum-seekers from Australia for 4000 recognised refugees from Malaysia, the rhetoric of fairness has accelerated. The 800 will enjoy special treatment in Malaysia, and some asylum-seekers now in Malaysia have declared the deal unfair, and warned they could travel to Australia by boat to obtain enhanced status themselves.

Ishma, a Tamil asylum-seeker who has been in Malaysia for five years, said she was angry that people who pay people-smugglers would be treated more favourably. "If they're going to do that for the 800, let them do it for us, let them give them money for us. We don't do the wrong thing," she said. "If things happen like that, we also will go illegally and go there and come back."

But Immigration Minister Chris Bowen yesterday downplayed the possibility of people taking boats to Australia in order to qualify for more rights and better conditions in Malaysia. "I think it's a big call. I think people come to Australia because they want to live in Australia," Mr Bowen said. "Suggesting that they'll get on a boat for some other reason I think is a brave call."

In an attempt to find a permanent home, and finally end their roaming across Asia, the few hundred ethnic Hazara refugees now living in Kuala Lumpur and beyond have decided to take action, not by taking to boats, but by formally asking for help from the highest authorities.

Today, their letter will be sent to the highest Australian authorities, including Mr Bowen.

Ali Haidari, an enterprising 36-year-old Hazara man who works illegally in Kuala Lumpur to survive, compiled the letter, had it translated and entrusted it to an Australian researcher and activist, who will send it off to the various recipients today.

"I am trying my best to take my family to Australia," he said.

Mr Haidari lives in a small flat in Kuala Lumpur with his parents, his wife and two-year-old daughter, and various other members of his extended family.

Their dream is to live in Australia.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/natio...f-1226103785435

1) Why quality of life in KL not good enough? Why the lucid dreams of wanting to live in Australia?
Malaysia not for human to live is it?

2) Is it because Malaysia is already a Muslim country? Are they trying to pull the same thing as what they did to Europe?
If it is then sorry, the Europeans have learned from their mistakes his time. Australia won't allow the same excuse of asylum seeking and Muslim invasion.

Riots At Australian Detention Camps

Grave-Digging, Riots at Australia Immigration Centre

SYDNEY — Inmates at Australia's Christmas Island immigration centre buried themselves in shallow graves in a symbolic gesture, a spokesman representing them said Friday, as riots erupted for a third night.

Immigration officials said there had been "another significant incident" involving up to 100 detainees at the remote island facility, but there were varying accounts of the latest protests among the asylum seekers.

Refugee advocate Ian Rintoul said some were digging shallow graves and burying themselves up to their necks in a show of their growing desperation.

"Asylum seekers in the Green compound have dug shallow graves in the courtyard of their compound," said Rintoul, who keeps in regular telephone contact with detainees at the centre.

"Some asylum seekers have already staged mock burials and buried themselves up to their necks in a symbolic protest that detention is killing their bodies and their minds."

A police spokeswoman told AFP that "the detainees used improvised weapons and lit a number of fires in a number of locations within the centre."
There was "cause to deploy a range of use of force options, including less-lethal munitions," she added, confirming tear gas, flash grenades and "bean bag" bullets were fired to quell the unrest.

It is the third consecutive night the centre has been rocked by violence and fires as detainees protest against delays in processing.
An immigration spokesman refused to comment, saying "there's been all sorts of claims made by all sorts of people".
"We wouldn't be going into those details," he said. "All we are saying is that there's been some unrest."
Rintoul said police had raided the centre's compounds early Friday searching for the protest's ringleaders and some detainees had been beaten or dragged away, presumably to the maximum-security unit.

The police spokeswoman said the force "strongly denies any mistreatment of any detainees" and had not received any official complaints.
The immigration department could not immediately confirm that anyone had been moved and said it did not "generally go into details of operational things like that."

Australia has a mandatory detention policy for asylum seekers arriving by boat and a record influx of some 7,000 boat people last year has placed the system under strain, with some detainees locked up for 18 months or more.
Rintoul said the protesters wanted human rights and media representatives allowed into the centre to witness conditions and had told him "we cannot get justice from the Australian government or immigration. We want international observers to give us protection."
Canberra recently beefed up the asylum character test so that detainees convicted of offences can be deported and the immigration spokesman said anyone found guilty over this week's riots had put their visa at risk.

About 40 asylum seekers were on hunger strike at a separate facility in Queensland, officials said, and were holding up protest banners in an outside area.

The unrest comes as Australia prepares to finalise an agreement to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia in exchange for 4,000 registered refugees living in the Asian country.

AFP News

Sigh....Always rioting, protesting and claiming SO-CALLED Human Rights
Stay back in Sri Lanka and build their country into 1st World first if they want better life.

Singaporean jailed for Finnish match-fixing mulls appeal

HELSINKI — A Singaporean national who was sentenced to prison in Finland for match-fixing in the country's premier football league, is considering making an appeal, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Wilson Raj Perumal "did not seek an acquittal in court, but he feels that a shorter sentence than the one that was given would have been appropriate", his lawyer Pertti Poeykkoe told AFP.

Perumal was on Tuesday sentenced by a court in Rovaniemi, the regional capital of Lapland, to two years in prison and damages of 150,000 euros (213,000 dollars) for masterminding match-fixing with the help of nine former football players for Rovaniemi football club RoPS.

The players - Seven Zambians and two Georgians -- were convicted of suspended sentences ranging from six months to one year and eight months, and damages totalling more than 200,000 euros.

"Once we get the verdict in English, my client and I will go through the details thoroughly and decide whether we file an appeal," Poeykkoe said, adding that they have a month to file the appeal.

According to court documents obtained by AFP, Perumal was a part of a group of Asian and Eastern European match-fixers who sought to manipulate outcomes around the world.

"Their activities were widespread and the betting profit made from a single successful fix was, after expenses, normally between 0.5 and 1.5 million euros," the court said, adding that Perumal's reward for successfully manipulating a match was 50,000 euros.

According to the verdict, the criminal group attempted to fix 26 matches between 2008 and 2011, successfully manipulating the outcome in 11 of these games.

Players accepted bribes ranging from 500 to 40,000 euros.
Prosecutor Juhani Maeki told AFP that even though his office had sought slightly stiffer sentences for the players, there was "no need" for them to appeal the court's decision.

AFP News
