Anyone knows a Malaysian website that sells Matcha i.e. green tea powder?

Or a shop in KL that sells it relatively cheaply?

Getting tired of spending RM13++ at Starbucks for Ice Green Tea Latte when all it takes is milk + ice + matcha powder shaken for awhile.
ebook downloads in Malaysia

Hi,

I'm trying to find out more information about this region-lockdown on ebook suddenly. Because I used to buy ebooks online from ereader.com, mobipocket.com and fictionwise.com for years with no problem. But suddenly, when I log in a couple of days ago, they put a region lock on purchaseable books on any country outside of US and Canada.

Anyone know when it's possible to get ebooks again from those sites? Or any site online, that is.

Backpain and Major Spine Disc Problem

Hi folks!

How's things? It's been awhile since I last post in H&F forum. About a month or so. Been busy at work and about 2 weeks ago, accidentally twisted my back that I'm now having problems. Over the course of the next 2 weeks, I had backpain and right leg pain.

Went to see an orthopaedic surgeon today and had an MRI done. Results don't look good. Looks like my old problem of a prolapsed disc came back and is worst. The doctor mention that the center "crabmeat" thing in the center of the spine has come out and is pressing against my nerves. He's also recommending me to undergo surgery to decompress the spine by removing any lose fragments and excess "crabmeat" sticking out.

Am still apprehensive about doing this. I know he can do it with no problems but I'm concern that my body may not recover. Yeah, I've lost weight and cleaned up my diet in the first 6 months of the year but sometimes, the worry of the unknown is worrisome.

I'm looking for people who have undergone the operation to get an idea how the recovery period was like and did they feel that their operation was a success.

Food Intolerance : Nightshade Vegetables

I was reading an article on food intolerance and what to eliminate from the diet, when I saw something interesting. "Avoid nightshade vegetables".

The type of vegetables in this list are tomatoes, eggplant, potato, capsicum (US calls them peppers), chillis (US lumps them together with peppers). Tobacco is also included in.

Some ppl have adverse reactions and others are ok.

http://www.vegetableexpert.co.uk/Nightshades.html
http://www.scribd.com/doc/938177/DEADLY-NIGHTSHADES-PDF
http://www.hps-online.com/foodprof9.htm
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=62
http://www.archure.net/salus/nightshade.html

Does anyone here avoid it from your diet?
Another protein supplement question

OK, I've gone through reading thread and searching through new and old posts and still haven't found a satisfactory answer on the different brands of protein supplement.

I'm not looking for direct selling products like Herbalife or any other meal replacement type of protein. I'm looking at the brands used by fitness people, especially those used by competitive sportsman (presumably that these brands would also pass the IOC drug test and these supplements are not tainted in any way). Brands that are available in Malaysia.

Looking for something that doesn't will leave a metal or powder after-taste in the mouth. I'm not sure how much of this after-taste will go away tbh but if it really does taste like a real drink, then do let me know.

I'm looking for the protein powder (chocolate ) for post recovery drink and also to make homemade protein bars.

Also, if anyone is in Sarawak, where do you buy your protein powders locally?

Okinawa Diet : Living Long Life

Awhile ago, mofonyx posted about weightlifting and aging that lead to an interesting island known as Okinawa, Japan, which has the highest number of centarians (100 years old and over) in the world.

So, I went a little digging, looking at the different food pyramids and nutrition recommendations across the world against the Okinawa pyramid. Note that this is not an exhaustive list.

US Food Pyramid by Mypyramid.gov
A lot of focus on grains, primarily oats, wholemeal and other complex carbo.

[attachmentid=934075]

US : Diabetic Food Pyramid
Because of the special dietary needs of diabetic patients, there is even one for them.

[attachmentid=934052]

Harvard School of Public Health : Food Pyramid
Harvard has proposed an alternative to the US Food Pyramid found at MyPyramid.gov. This is because of the concern of the quantities recommended that are known to lead to some of the diseases that are on the uptrend.

[attachmentid=934070]

How does that fit in as a Malaysian?
The above food guides is hard to follow. If you follow Western dietary guidelines, they have a habit of focusing more on eating bread and pasta as their carbo source, rather than rice and noodles. You can find rice and noodles in dietary guidelines but when it comes to recipes, it's still the way that pasta seems to be cook and not so much the homecook or restaurant way of cooking.

So when I heard about the Okinawa Diet, I had a peak at their website.

Okinawa Diet : What is it?

[attachmentid=934088]

From a look at the Okinawa food pyramid, it looks like the difference between this pyramid and the above pyramids is :

-high intake of vegetables, nearly 1:1 ratio for carbo
-low intake of milk products
-higher intake of soy products
-high intake of rice and asian noodles compared to pasta and wheat bread
-high intake of seaweed into their diet
-high intake of fish

The Okinawans also live a very active lifestyle.

I didn't managed to find the book "Okinawa Program" and "Okinawa Diet" so cannot tell if my observations are correct. Going to try and get hold of the book in KL or in UK when I'm there next week.

Shokuiku : Japanese Food Education

[attachmentid=934736] [attachmentid=934760]

There is also a Japanese Food Pyramid that greatly follows the Okinawa Diet plan.

For more information, click here . If anyone has a link to a Japanese site that provides official details of Shokuiko, would appreciate it if you can post about it. I can't read Japanese so searches are limited.

Portion control

I'm amazed at the Japanese ingenuity about portion control that would make it so much easier for people who are wanting to lose weight or control their calories.

For them, they sized everything up based on the volume of the food container (since they have a bento tradition) and use the 3:1:2 rule of 3 parts grains, 1 part protein, 2 parts veggie. Depending on your activity level and age and gender, you can size up the portions accordingly. The bento is only for one meal, usually lunch time.

Click below for more information :

Choosing your Food Container
Food portion control from Yellow Studio (Bento Container Manufacturer)

Postnote : During the posting, IE crashed so here's another missing portion.

How does the Japanese food pyramid fit with Malaysian food intake today?

Malaysian homecook food wasn't always as oily as it is today. Speak to your grandparents or older relatives and they will tell you that in the earlier half of the 20th century, it was very hard to get food like meat, rice, noodles, oil and sugar. They had to use these ingredients with care and you'll find that their diet mostly consisted of vegetables with some meat. I'm making these deduction based on feedback from my parents, grandparents and older relatives.

You'll find that homecook meals tend to be less oily and portions are controlled to acceptable limits. People don't usually eat until their stomachs are 100% full but just pleasantly full.

Today, because of the Malaysian population demand for meat, rice, noodles, oil and sugar, you'll find people eating more than they need to. The best foods are always the ones that is fried and meaty and sweet. Sugar is used liberally to hide the bland taste of food.

Following the Japanese Food Pyramid is not too bad, I would think. They have an interesting way of describing what needs to be eaten and this philosophy has permeated into our local supermarkets. We eat soy products like they do e.g. soya bean drinks, tofu. We eat fish too. Seaweed is becoming popular again. Mushrooms and egg. Not only that, Japanese modernday cooking includes Western influences such as mayonaise, baked goods, etc. The difference is that they eat less than we do with better portion control.

Chicken from the wet market

Just wondering : anyone here familiar with the rules for poultry farming in Malaysia?

Went to the wet market with my Granny today and we spoke to one of the chicken sellers there. They're not farmers, just the sellers. Asking them if any injections are given to the chicken now and they said that the Ministry of Agriculture has banned it for many years now.

Hmm... what do you guys think? I only know of one person buying organic chicken on these forums. The others, do you think it's a big concern for you? And would you pay the extra price for organic chicken?

Reversal of body aging

It started with a conversation with tengster :

QUOTE(tengster @ Apr 10 2009, 06:04 PM)

**tengster promptly laugh at the wall and then get back to work**

Do you think with both exercise and laughter, one can reverse the age in terms of appearance, stamina, health, etc.?
[right][snapback]25026353[/snapback][/right]

It takes long while to reverse age in terms of appearance, stamina, health, etc.

Laughter and exercise creates endorphins which gives you the high feeling that is similar to morphine. Just that there's an enzyme or hormone that breaks down the endorphins to manageable levels.

Eventually, it probably can't be reversed that much because it'll catch up with you in the end. I look at my parents in Miri. It's all about managing stress. Learning to laugh at oneself, you just learnt the secret of keeping depression at bay.

I like laughing. I like to laugh. I'm also probably too loud.

The only problem I have is that whereever I go, people who are giving speeches or talks have this uncanny knack of looking at me and picking me as the person to look at while they speak. You know, the person that has the most friendly face amongst all the stranges. Very gelik. Then I get volunteered by total strangers. Adoh....

Hmm...diet helps a lot as well. But mostly, have to start young i.e. kids age. My mum used to control my food intake. And made sure that we eat enough fruits and veggies. It helped a lot later in life as my skin and hair are pretty good for a fat person i.e. no acne, pimples, smooth skin, soft silky hair.

For the face, hmmm.... I don't wear makeup unless for functions. Moisturizers sometimes. Cleanser used regularly and toner. Mostly diet though.

Doing some research on protein, carb, fat ratio

Need some feedback from the BBers here. Helping a friend on this and I must admit that BB diet plans confuses me because everyone has a different opinion in BB.com. And all the other posts around don't really talk about the nutrition plan in total i.e. a one day meal plan and more of specific things like pre-post workout.

So, I wanted to get your feedback to some questions :

What is the ratio for protein, carb, fat? I'm seeing things from 40:40:20 to 60:20:20 to 40:20:40.

Is it based on kcal or gram of each of the component in the food?

Would the ratio change for different stages of BB e.g. losing weight, bulking, maintenance?

How often do you change your ratios? Weekly, monthly, quarterly, half yearly?

What triggers you to adjust your protein, carb, fat intake? Visual inspection of muscle or body fat count?

Is the ratio based on what is consumed in total per day or per every meal?

Do you consider taking low GI food or a mix of low GI + med GI food?

I've seen some food plans from ppl in the Members Journal forum. Does anyone of you go for blood tests to check if your liver functions checks out alrite i.e. within the normal range specified in the report?

[addedon]April 9, 2009, 8:50 am[/addedon]Postnote : I'm putting this post in here so that I can get specific answers from BBers and not from random public answers in H&F forum.
