Where to buy books

Hi all,

I'm starting my PhD soon and would like to read on some books before doing it. Is the a physical/online store for those kind of books in Malaysia? Normally I can only see novels, etc in book store.

If there's none, how long does it take for amazon.com or any other online store to send the books to Malaysia?

How to apply for PhD

Hi all,

Recently I have been granted a scholarship to do my PhD (slab/slai). But here's the problem, all of my PhD applications have been rejected. One reason why my applications were rejected (just my guess) is that I do not hand in together a research proposal in the applications.

How do you exactly have a specific topic and produce a research proposal when you haven't start your phd? I do have a general topic in mind (ie Dynamical System in Applied Maths) but not specific topic (ie The global bifurcation of SIR model in blablabla).

So I'm kinda stuck and I don't want to waste the opportunity, the scholarship given.

Thanks.

Life of an academic staff in ipta

Hi everyone,

I finished my degree with honours last month and considering to pursue my study in Master/PhD, especially under academic staff training provided by IPTA (slab/slai scholarship). However, i am in doubt.

My main question is: Are IPTA lecturers too busy?

I heard that due to research quotas you need to meet, lecturers in IPTA are often too busy. That is, too busy for their family etc. I've heard complaints from children of lecturers who said their parents have no life. Well you get the idea.

I tried asking for opinions from people I know but it doesn't help much. The common answer is: you're busy if you choose to be busy. Does that mean lecturer can choose a not-so-busy life and devote more onto family than career?

Also, I like teaching (adults, not kids) on more advanced material (university/pre-u level) but not too much into research. Is it possible that as an academic staff in IPTA that you do not involve much in research?

summoning LYN academic advisor [@azarimy]

What to do now after Degree?

Hey there!

Since I am graduating soon, I don't really know where to go with my life after this. I have Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Mathematics from University of Auckland with CGPA (expected to be) 8.5/9 equivalently around 3.9/4. I can almost be sure that I will get First Class Honours unless I screw up something REALLY bad. The final sem results arent out yet.

So I'm wondering, what to do now? On one hand I can be an academician, studying Master/PhD. But I'm not sure if that is what I want. Studying can get boring at times. Is there any other choice/profession for me?

I really have no idea what I want to become professionally... o_o
Any thoughts?
