As a Rohingya youth, I write with a heavy heart for my people living as refugees in Malaysia. We fled Myanmar not by choice, but to escape genocide, persecution and violence against our community.

Today, many Rohingya families continue to live in fear, uncertainty and hardship. Therefore, I sincerely appeal to the Government and people of Malaysia as well as UNHCR Malaysia and IOM Malaysia to protect and support Rohingya refugees and help us live with safety and dignity.

We lost our homes but we have not lost our hope.

Please stand with humanity. Please stand with the Rohingya people.

1824–1826

First Anglo-Burmese War berakhir dengan British mengambil alih Arakan (kini Rakhine).

Semasa pemerintahan British, kemasukan pekerja dari Chittagong (kini Bangladesh) ke Arakan meningkat kerana ketika itu kedua-dua kawasan berada di bawah pentadbiran British. Perkara ini mengubah demografi kawasan dan menjadi punca ketegangan dengan penduduk Rakhine.

1942 (Perang Dunia Kedua)

Jepun menyerang Burma.

British berundur dan menubuhkan pasukan V Force, lalu membekalkan senjata kepada sebahagian penduduk Islam（Rohingya）di utara Arakan untuk membantu mempertahankan kawasan daripada kemaraan Jepun.

Dalam keadaan tiada pentadbiran yang berfungsi, tercetus pembunuhan keatas komuniti Rakhine Buddha oleh Rohingya Muslim(yang bersenjatakan oleh British untuk pertahankan dari jepun).

Sebelum Burma merdeka, beberapa pemimpin Islam(elite rohingya) di utara Arakan bertemu Muhammad Ali Jinnah(PM pakistan) dan memohon supaya kawasan Maungdaw dan Buthidaung disatukan dengan Pakistan Timur (kini Bangladesh).

Jinnah menolak permintaan itu kerana menganggapnya urusan dalaman Burma.

1947–1954

Selepas permintaan itu gagal, kumpulan bersenjata Mujahid melancarkan pemberontakan terhadap burma cuba jajah tanah orang dan pelbagai tuntutan dikemukan.

Antara tuntutan mereka ialah autonomi atau pemisahan kawasan majoriti Rohingya untuk disertai Pakistan Timur.

Palawan belongs to China

A claim from social media is stirring debate again.

Posts shared on Chinese social media have been circulating the idea that Palawan was once part of China, calling it "Zheng He Island" after the Ming dynasty explorer Zheng He. Some of the posts even argued that the Philippine island should be "returned" to China, claiming Zheng He had discovered it centuries ago.

Philippine authorities have strongly pushed back against the narrative. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) said there is no historical or legal basis for those claims, emphasizing that Palawan has always been part of the Philippines. The agency also pointed out that simply visiting or exploring a place does not give a country ownership over it.

Historians also note that Palawan had already been inhabited for tens of thousands of years before Zheng He's voyages, much like the long-standing reminder that Christopher Columbus did not arrive in an empty America. The NHCP further clarified that the Chinese government itself has not made any official claim over Palawan.

Today, Palawan continues to be internationally recognized as Philippine territory. It also raises an interesting question about the modern influence of historical narratives: when old voyages are used to support present-day arguments, where should we draw the line between history, misinformation, and national identity?

I bought a table at Bersama's WeFund fundraising dinner. 930 guests. 93 tables. A convention space in Selayang ... not a five-star ballroom, not a glamorous hotel. A shophouse concept venue, unpretentious and honest. Exactly right for the occasion.

And from the moment I walked in, I felt it.

Not excitement. Not the usual political rally energy. Something deeper. Something I HAVE NOT felt in a very long time in this country.

𝗔 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲. 𝗦𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆. 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿.

Like everyone in that room was collectively undergoing a profound upgrade ... transitioning away from decades of programming for survival and stepping into the frequency of soul sovereignty and co-creation. 🌿

I looked around the room. Malay 🧕 Chinese👲🏻 Indian👨🏾 Young👱🏼‍♂️ Middle-aged🧔🏻‍♂️ Baby boomers like me 👵🏼 All dressed casually. All there because they chose to be ... not because anyone paid them, not because anyone summoned them. Just ordinary Malaysians who decided that enough is enough and something better is possible.

At my table ... members of Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan, their President and Exco members, friends and family. People who have served this country and care deeply about its future.

And then something happened that I will not forget. 🥹

𝗥𝗮𝗳𝗶𝘇𝗶 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. 🥹

No holding room. No bodyguards. No entourage clearing a path. Just a man in a Bersama T-Shirt, moving from table to table, shaking hands, saying thank you. Like any ordinary Malaysian would.

Wong Chen, MP for Subang, came to our table too. Same warmth. Same groundedness. Same genuine human presence.

I have been to events where ministers arrive flanked by protocol officers and leave before the food is served. Where the stage is more important than the people. Where power performs itself for its own benefit.

This was nothing like that.

This was a man who gave up his ministerial position, vacated his parliamentary seat, and is now working 20 hours a day ... his own words ... to prove that Malaysian politics can be done differently. And he showed up at my table to say thank you. 🥹

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝗳𝗶𝘇𝗶 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗶𝗸 𝗡𝗮𝘇𝗺𝗶 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲:

Nik Nazmi spoke about how most Malaysians today don't vote out of love or conviction ... they vote against something. And the worst victims are young Malaysians who simply don't know who to believe anymore. That is the wound Bersama is trying to heal.

Rafizi spoke about three big problems Malaysia must face honestly ... corruption, economic competitiveness, and sustainability of our healthcare, pension and national debt. Problems that exist across every government, every coalition, every era. Problems nobody has the courage to address because addressing them honestly might cost votes.

And then he said something that crystallised everything:

"𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁." 🌿

He compared Bersama to Google ... the 18th search engine in the world when it launched. Yahoo was worth billions. Google offered itself for just USD1 million and was rejected. Within five years Google changed everything. Not because it was the biggest. But because it started with the RIGHT question:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱?

Bersama's question is the same. Not ... how do we win power? But → how do we fix the real problems of ordinary Malaysians?

And the founder of Bersama, Mr Tan, asked only one thing when he placed the party unconditionally in the hands of Rafizi and Nik Nazmi:

I have organised many events in my professional life. I know what it takes to pull off a room of 930 people. I know the logistics, the planning, the details that can go wrong.

Last night, the sound system had technical issues. One dish didn't quite hit the mark. The young volunteers ... running on passion and their own pocket money ... were still figuring things out as they went.

And none of it mattered. Because the energy in that room was bigger than any production value.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟. 🌿

This is what a movement looks like when it is built by the people for the people. Not by warlords. Not by corporate money. Not by political machinery running on patronage and fear.

By 27,000 ordinary Malaysians who each paid RM20 ... the price of a cup of coffee ☕️ and said: 𝑰 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒚.

I am a baby boomer. I have lived through every chapter of Malaysian politics. I have seen the promises. I have felt the disappointments. I have watched seven decades of the same broken record play itself out.

Last night I felt something I had almost forgotten how to feel. 🥹

SHAH ALAM, July 8 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has not granted consent for surau and musolla in shopping malls across the state to hold Friday prayers for now, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) said.

Mais chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin said the decision was based on concerns that allowing surau or musolla in shopping malls to conduct Friday prayers would undermine efforts to preserve and strengthen the role of mosques as the primary centres of worship for Muslims.

He said such a move could lead to a decline in the number of congregants at existing mosques and surau authorised to hold Friday prayers, as Muslims would have the option to perform the prayers at surau or musolla in shopping malls.

“At present, there are 448 mosques and 379 surau in Selangor that have been authorised to conduct Friday prayers. This indicates that the existing mosques and surau are sufficient to accommodate the state’s Muslim population.

“In addition, there are also mosques and surau located near shopping malls, making it convenient for the public to perform Friday prayers,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the Sultan of Selangor’s decree is in line with Islamic teachings and the promotion of Islamic values by reinforcing the role of mosques as the primary places of worship for Muslims, while also serving as centres for religious education and dakwah.

On the issue of permitting surau or musolla in shopping malls to hold Friday prayers, Salehuddin said Mais must also take into consideration the appointment of imams, bilals and other personnel, as well as the management and governance of such facilities, to ensure compliance with all regulations and policies set by the council.

“If the personnel serving surau authorised to conduct Friday prayers in shopping malls are not appointed by Mais, it would create difficulties in monitoring and overseeing the management of the surau or musolla, including ensuring compliance with and uniformity in the Friday sermon prepared by Mais,” he said.

Salehuddin said that although one surau in a shopping mall in Selangor has been granted permission to hold Friday prayers, the approval is temporary because there is no mosque located near the premises.

“The temporary approval will be withdrawn if a mosque is built near the shopping mall in the future and is able to accommodate the local Muslim community for Friday prayers,” he said.

“Accordingly, Mais calls on all Muslims in Selangor to continue enlivening mosques and surau so that these institutions can serve as centres of unity for the Muslim community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Salehuddin said Mais has taken note of the federal government’s position, as expressed by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan, regarding the proposal to establish surau authorised to conduct Friday prayers in shopping malls nationwide.

Mais also stressed that matters relating to mosques, surau, and musolla fall under the jurisdiction of the states, in accordance with the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

“In Selangor, the Sultan of Selangor, as the Head of the Islamic Religion, has the prerogative to make decisions on the administration of Islamic affairs, including granting approval for surau or musolla to conduct Friday prayers,” he said.

He added that the establishment of mosques and surau, as well as the use of any building as a mosque, surau or musolla, is subject to the prior written approval of Mais under Section 97 of the Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003. — Bernama

BRUSSELS, July 7 — A network that imported more than 200,000 counterfeit Chinese-made condoms into Europe has uncovered, EU officials announced today.

The bloc’s anti-fraud office (OLAF) said it had seized products in Romania, Serbia and Spain and traced them back to a single supplier in China.

The condoms used the logo of a “well-known brand” and had been labelled as toys to avoid closer inspection, but OLAF said it had traced the source of the network with the help of Chinese authorities.

“Counterfeit condoms are dangerous. They are untested, uncontrolled and unsafe,” said Olaf Director-General Petr Klement.

“They can allow for the spread of sexually transmitted infections.”

The statement did not say if the Chinese supplier or others in the chain had faced a sanction. — AFP

I received a call from a person identified by Truecaller as Suren Singa.

I did not pick up. He then called using WhatsApp. My app automatically silenced callers not in my phone book.

He sent a photo of a parcel. Name and address were mine. The message accompanying the photo was, from J&T.

I replied with, Thank you.

Normally courier service delivery won't call. Only a photo was sent. I always thanked them.

I was about to go out and pick up the parcel when he sent another message using WhatsApp. It says, need to pay, RM10.60.

He then sent another photo, a TouchnGo QR Code with his full name. The name matches his identity on WhatsApp. Not Suren Singa.

Before I could digest, he called using WhatsApp. I pickup.

He said I need to pay. As I did not expect any parcel from anyone, I asked for the sender's name.

He said there was none. I told him I was not accepting the parcel.

He accepted my decision.

I apologized to him for the inconvenience caused. He said it was alright.

I have read about such a scam. The payment part triggered my memory.

Thinking that I have saved myself from a scam I suddenly remembered that the parcel could be from a genuine sender.

That was half an hour later. So I called back. He did not pick up. He could be driving.

I sent him a message saying that it could be mine if the parcel is soft. If he is willing to return I do not mind paying him more.

No reply.

I called again 10 minutes later. He picked up. He said he could only return very much later as he has other parcels to deliver. I said I would wait for him.

He messaged me an hour later. I quickly went out to pick up the parcel and paid him more as promised.

I thanked him and apologized again. He assured me it was alright. He was not upset at all for having to make the extra trip.

The parcel was from Tabung Darah Hospital Tawau . It contains a t-shirt, a medal and a goodie bag.

I took part in the virtual walk in May. I tried to collect it when I went back to Tawau recently but it was not ready. So I requested for them to send me and I would pay for the postage.
