External HD problem (Samsung)

I own a Samsung S2 Portable 320GB external HD... mainly use to store music and video files.

My problem starts when I lend it to my friend, which he used to back-up his files from his laptop. His laptop got some problem with the OS so he wants to reformat it. After the backing-up and format process completed, all the folders icon in the external turns into shortcut icon. When double click the 'shortcut', an error box pop-up that says "Windows cannot find 'F:\RECYCLER\0xFFD12566.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

When I put the cursor above the 'shortcut', it point to "Location: E:\WINDOWS\system32"... which is my system folder. But the properties of the Ext drive still shows that the file is there (screenshot).

Is it because of a virus/malware? Or maybe my friend has accidentally deleted some system file on the ext during the back-up process... hope experts here could help me. My solution is to reformat the drive but then all my friends back-up files will be lost!
