Visual Basic 2012 Layout & Navigation

Hi all,

I am in the process of creating a POC desktop system using VB 2012. Honestly I am quite a beginner with .NET technology, so there's a lot to catch up here. I would like to have suggestion from fellow coders on how to design the layout of a common VB 2012 program and the controls needed to develop it.

Since the system is intended for normal (basic computer knowledge) users, I would like to avoid doing system navigation & layout using normal drop-down menu (those File > New/Open/Save/Save As thingy). Instead, I prefer to develop something that is GUI-friendly (big buttons with image for navigation etc).

At the moment, I'm experimenting with MenuStrip to dynamically load the menu from database. If you guys have any easier/more feasible way, do share with me.

TIA.

Question with Regards to Offer to Purchase

Hello all,

I would like to seek opinions from fellow friends here (and would be best if you can provide your professional ones).

I engaged an agent for the purpose of buying a property. I have signed the Letter of Offer to Purchase for a property on 29 June 2015, and the seller signed the same agreement on 30 June 2015. Both signing process was witness by the same person (the agent). Booking fee of 3% was paid on 29 June 2015. Below are the clauses in the agreement.

1. 10% of the total price should be paid upon signing of S&P
2. Balance 90% to be paid within 90 days from the date of signing of S&P
3. S&P must be signed within 21 days from the date of acceptance of seller. In default of signing the S&P:
a) by buyer (provided there is no delay from the vendor/vendor's solicitor), deposit will be forfeited
b) by seller, deposit will be refunded (and will have performance cost shared between agent & buyer)
4. Stamp duty clauses
5. Handling over property clauses
6. GST clauses
7. Offer of Purchase is subject to acceptance of seller. If not agreed, deposit shall be fully refunded without any additional cost
8. The offer letter is a binding contract until S&P is signed
9. Deposit receipt clauses
10. If loan is not approved or approved less than 90%, deposit shall be fully refunded

For the info, I did not manage to secure any loan until the date of 31 Aug 2015 (21 working days after signed acceptance of buyer). The agent and seller agreed to wait for me to secure another loan (no written agreement for this). I managed to secure a loan last Monday but have yet to sign (or even see) the loan agreement. The loan approval was conveyed by phone call & WhatsApp message only.

My question is, if I would like to cancel the purchase now (25 Sept 2015) on the ground that I am no longer interested with this property, do the seller and agent have the rights to forfeit my deposit?

Thank you in advance for the input.

----------------
Added info:
- I do keep all WhatsApp conversation and e-mail for my reference

Framework for Data Entry

Hi all,

I need opinion on which framework (PHP/Java) that is suitable for creating data entry form. What I'm trying to achieve is to convert manual paper form into electronic format (imagine the form used for job application/register in JPN/etc). In addition to that, user should be able to upload supporting documents as well (PDF/DOC, less than 10MB in size). Once this is complete, I would then need to host this with any webhosting company, so need to take into consideration of whether the company supports the framework/language used or not. Also, since this is just only a few forms (less than 10), I don't think so it is feasible for me to go full-fledged on a very complicated framework. The framework suggested should be able to do minor modification on the UI (put logo, change font, etc).

I have tried to search in Google, but none seems to be helping enough. So far I have narrowed down the search to Laravel (PHP), ATK (PHP) and also ZK (Java). All comes with their pros and cons, but none really gives me the nudge yet. I would like to know opinion from fellow coders as you guys have your first hand experience in doing the actual development.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same kind of hard drive but my power connector (the thing on the right side of the picture) is believed to have been spoilt. I want to buy the exact hard drive model as in the picture (size from 500MB above) or if you are able to sell to me the power connector alone, that is even better.

Update: The hard drive itself is damaged, not the connector.

Hi all,

I wanted to do a JOIN query between 2 tables using Eclipselink. I managed to do it if I use createNativeQuery method, but I need assistance on how to do this using JPQL. There are some tutorials on the web that I've looked through, but for each example given does not work. What I want to achieve is to list district names and their respective state name. Need help from fellow Java sifus here for some hint/help.
CADD Training Centre (M) Sdn Bhd

Hi all,

I received interview request from CADD Training Centre (M) Sdn Bhd for the position of IT Trainee. However a quick check with Google reveals that the company is also known as City Labs. This is a bit alarming as they use different name in Jobstreet and in real company website, as this is one of the tactics used by companies that say they provide training but end up asking candidates to do sales. Would like to know if any of you guys have or currently working with this company or have undergone such training with this company before. If yes, how is the environment looks like and whether I should proceed with the interview. Thanks in advance.

Update: I didn't go to the training

MySQL Convert Returns Empty Recordset

Table struct:
- id INT PRIMARY KEY, name VARCHAR(50), win VARCHAR(50), draw VARCHAR(50), lose VARCHAR(50)
- column win, draw and lose will always have numeric values. I just don't get why the db creator put VARCHAR(50) there and I don't have the authorization to change it.

SQL:
SELECT `name`, CONVERT(win, UNSIGNED) FROM table

Problem:
This SQL is run from ASP script and it works fine in localhost environment. However, once transferred to the web server the recordset will return empty data, meaning nothing will be returned at all. There is also no error produced, which giving queue that the SQL passes the recordset. Recordset status is open and not EOF for localhost, but status is open and EOF in web server. Both localhost and web server databases running MySQL 4.0.13. On localhost server is running on MyISAM, I think the same goes to web server (I can and will check if that is necessary). Is there any setting that causes this to happen?

Reset Windows Password Through Network

One of my client's servers (let's call it server A) had its passwd changed last night by a staff. Sadly the staff is kinda not very tech-savvy, he didn't even know he had accidentally changed the passwd (and he forgot the passwd). I'm at home right now and if possible, I don't want to go down just to reset the passwd. Had been finding ways to reset the passwd through LAN, because I still can access other servers (me at home > LogMeIn > server B > server A).

Tried to dump the SAM file with pwdump3 and read its content with JTR or rainbow table crack, but since I don't have the admin passwd I can't dump the SAM file. Worst is, there's only 1 admin account (administrator) and that is the account that the passwd is changed. That leaves pwdump3 and pspasswd out of question, since both tools need admin access to change passwd/generate SAM dump. Can't get SAM dump, so JTR, lophtcrack and rainbow table are also useless.

So would like to ask if anyone has any idea so that I don't have to go down at client's site tonight. Basically what I'm trying to achieve is I want to reset the passwd through network. I have LogMeIn access to the other servers, from there I can access server A. If there is still no solution until 9pm, I'll be going down just to reset it. TIA.

Btw, I'm not breaking in the server or something. I know all those 'pop in Knoppix cd' and stuffs, but those are useful if I'm physically at the server. I'm just lazy to go down there.

Person's Digital Signature

Hi,

My company is doing system for a client which allows customers to sign on a tablet and that signature will be padded to a digital form. Based on the tablet's API, the signature file is exportable but it is not reversible, meaning one cannot simply take the exported file and add the signature to another form for mischievous use. Furthermore, the signature is fixed with date and time of signing, which make the process of counterfeiting difficult. I would not say impossible, because I believe sooner or later someone will find a way to decrypt the file, but that's out of question as of now.

Now, the client is a bit concerned about whether the digital signature is applicable to be used in court cases should anything happens. In simple terms, will the digital form with the signature a valid proof or evidence should it be taken to court? I've been googling about digital signature act, but what I found is the digital certificate act which talks about public cert and private cert. However, I found this one clause that might be applicable to my scenario here.

QUOTE

"Digital Signature" is defined by the Act as a transformation of a message using an asymmetric cryptosystem such that a person having the initial message and the signer's public key can accurately determine whether the transformation was created using the private key that corresponds to the signer's public key and whether the message has been altered since the transformation was made.

taken from http://www.lawyerment.com.my/intellectual/computer2.shtml

Any of you guys ever happen to be in this situation before? The client is really concern in this matter and if my company can't prove that digital signature can be used in court, they are forced to print the form and have the customers to manually signed it. But by doing that, it'll beat the purpose of having a digital form altogether. Advice/Opinion is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

VB6 MSCOMM and Hyperterminal

I have 2 COM ports connected together through RS232 serial-to-RJ45 cable. The converters and cable are tested using hyperterminal and are working perfectly. I set up 2 hyperterminals with the same baud rate etc and send one character from one port to the other, and it receives nicely. Then I send a 24-character string, also the other one receives corrently.

Then, I setup a test code using VB6 to capture data received from COM2 and to send through COM1. Both sending and listening COM use 9600,n,8,1 setting. When I use VB6 COM1 to send, hyperterminal on COM2 will pick up the string nicely. Problem is, when I set VB6 to listen to COM2, the string received is truncated into three 8-character strings. See example below for more understanding.

Hyperterminal listening:
VB6 sends AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Hyperterminal receives AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

VB6 listening:
VB6 sends AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
VB6 receives
AAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAA

Any reason for this weird behaviour? Explanation/Pointer for any explanation is fine. My code is as follows. TIA.

CODE

Select Case commReceive.CommEvent
Case comEvReceive:
 sRecv = commReceive.Input
 txtRecv.Text = txtRcv.Text & sRecv & vbCrLf
End Select

SQLDMO Backup Using VB6.0

Hi all..

I'm doing this code to backup SQL Server database. The only thing I don't understand is the code fails if I define SQLDMO events to it, but works perfectly if I comment the event declaration. I'm not quite sure which part goes wrong and Google doesn't return workable/useful results either. I can live without the events, just that it's a lot nicer to be able to give the user some indication that the backup process is currently running. The error message returned is -2147221499 - [SQL-DMO]Code execution exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.
