Problem with family in law

Lets cut it short for long story.

Few days ago, I accidently said my father in law "gam hou sei" (甘好死) in Joking mood in front my wife and sis in law.
the other day when my wife return to her home, my father in law sarcasm and scold her.
at first my wife dunno what happen. after that only she get to know her sis told my father in law bout the incident above. and her sis start to sarcasm and scold her as well.
i feel sad my wife treated by her family this way.
i still dun have the chance to meet my father in law. But will go to their house on coming sunday as usual.

all bro and sis,
is it i really make a huge mistake/error?
What should i do when i meet them?

Act like normal like nothing happen?

or

Explain to my father in law that i doesn't means anything,hope he don't misunderstanding?

or

Any opinion from you guys?

its exactly what the fact.
its just a usual phrase i believe their family member do quote this to each other before.
why like this phrase coming out from my mouth like very serious?
BTW i dunno what else my sis in law talk to her daddy?maybe got adding oil to the fire? i dunno..
