Nissan Develops Concept Car to Combat Drunk Drivin

Good news for drinkers in the future?

Source: http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_...T=english_PRINT

Nissan Develops Concept Car to Combat Drunk Driving
Aug 06, 2007 17:34

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. has developed a concept car featuring multiple functions to prevent drunk driving as part of efforts for combating drunk driving.

The company will promote technology development and conduct field tests by using the concept car. The car is designed to detect drunk-driving or its signs on the basis of information obtained by alcohol odor sensors and a facial recognition system as well as driving behavior.

The alcohol odor sensors are built in the transmission shift knob and in the seats. When the sensors detect alcohol above a predetermined value, they warn the driver via a voice alert and the indication on the car navigation screen.

When the sensor in the shift knob detects alcohol, the shift lever is automatically locked, immobilizing the transmission.

A camera is mounted on the instrument cluster to monitor the driver's face and estimates the driver's state of consciousness through image processing. In addition, the system tracks the behavior of the vehicle to evaluate the driver's driving condition such as drowsiness and inattentiveness.

Then, if the system determines that there is the possibility of drunk-driving, it warns the driver via a voice alert and the indication on the car navigation screen. At the same time, it also tightens up the seat belt to further alerts the driver.
