Tesla shareholders approved a $1tn compensation plan for CEO Elon Musk on Thursday, awarding the world’s richest person what would be the largest corporate payout in history if he meets the goals necessary to receive it.

The pay package, which several high-profile investors opposed, demonstrates that shareholders still believe Musk can lead the automaker in an era dominated by robotics and artificial intelligence.

The result of the vote was announced at the annual shareholder event in Austin, Texas, with more than 75% of investors voting in favor of the plan. Chants of “Elon” erupted in the room at the news of its approval.

“Thanks, guys,” Musk said, after briefly dancing on stage alongside the company’s Optimus robots.

Musk described the Optimus robots, which have not gone into mass production, as the future of the company and of humanity. He reiterated a claim that it would be “the biggest product of all time”, and suggested they could be used in everything from healthcare to prisons.

“You now get a free Optimus and it’s just going to follow you around and stop you from doing crime,” Musk said. “You don’t have to put people in prisons and stuff. It’s really wild to think of the possibilities.”

Musk had previously said he wanted the pay package for more control over the company and exert “strong influence over this robot army” that he vowed to build as the company branches into robotics.

Musk’s staggering compensation is comparative with the GDP of entire countries, exceeding that of Ireland, Sweden and Argentina. It vastly exceeds federal funding for entire government programs such as annual cost of Snap food benefits and dwarfs that of other tech moguls such as Mark Zuckerberg.

Critics of the package, including some investors, argued that awarding Musk concentrated power in one erratic leader and ignored the challenges the company has faced.

“Elon Musk just got $1tn for failure. Sales are down, safety risks are up, and his politics are driving customers away. This isn’t leadership – it’s the world’s most expensive participation trophy,” the protest group Tesla Takedown said in a statement.

If Musk delivers on the lofty milestones in the pay package laid out at the annual meeting, he could become the world’s first trillionaire. To do so, he would need to guide Tesla to $8.5tn in market capitalization, eight times what it’s worth today. He would also be required to deploy millions of autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots, and sustain the company’s bottom line in the hundreds of billions over the next decade.

The major goals of the compensation plan, split into 12 tranches, lay out a path for Tesla to reach that enormous market capitalization. If he brings the company to that financial height, Musk would be able to cash in on an additional 12% of the company’s stocks. To do so, he has to be vested in the company for at least seven and a half years. He would also have to help develop a long-term succession plan for the company he has led for more than 20 years.

The stock options provided by the new compensation plan, on top of shares guaranteed to him in his 2018 package, would leave Musk with 25% ownership of Tesla’s stock. As of 5 November, Tesla stock was trading close to its 52-week high, at about $450 per share.

Over the course of a decade, Musk is required to deliver 20m of Tesla’s electric vehicles to buyers, sell 10m active full self-driving subscriptions, develop and sell 1m humanoid robots and deploy 1m robotaxis in commercial service.

Musk will also be required to bring the company to $400bn in actual earnings for four consecutive quarters. Tesla’s actual earnings for the third quarter of 2025 were $4.2bn, down 9% from the year prior.

As of November, Musk’s net worth was $460bn, the highest in the world, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.

Indonesia announce Patrick Kluivert

Just two days after the shock dismissal of Shin Tae-Yong, Netherlands legend Patrick Kluivert has been announced as the new coach of Indonesia.

PSSI, Indonesian football's governing body, confirmed the appointment on Wednesday afternoon, with Kluivert signing an initial two-year contract -- through to 2027 -- that has an extension option.
Kluivert, whose only previous head coach roles have been with Curaçao and Turkish outfit Adana Demirspor, will arrive in Indonesia on Saturday and will be unveiled the following day.

Former Premier League man Denny Landzaat has been named as one of Kluivert's assistants along with fellow Dutchman Alex Pastoor, while two yet-to-be-announced local coaches will also be part of his technical staff.

PSSI made ways at the start of the week with the shocking move to part ways with Shin, who had presided over their remarkable rise from the doldrums since taking charge at the end of 2019.

Indonesia, who were 173rd in the FIFA world rankings at the time of Shin's appointment, are now significantly higher in 127th, and are the only Southeast Asian outfit contending in the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Shin also guided Indonesia to a first AFC Asian Cup appearance in 17 years at the start of last year, where they did well to reach the round of 16, and also won them a first Southeast Asian Games gold medal in over three decades.

However, it emerged in the wake of Shin's sacking that there had been friction between him and key PSSI decision makers, none more influential than chairman Erick Thohir -- the former owner of Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan.

With an ever-increasing number of foreign-born heritage imports that have been given Indonesian citizenship in recent years, many of whom hail from the Netherlands, there was immediately speculation that PSSI would turn to a Dutch tactician -- as has proven to be the case.

Widely regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation, Kluivert's glorious playing career saw him with the UEFA Champions League with Ajax and he also boasted an impressive record of 122 goals in 257 matches during a six-year spell with LaLiga giants Barcelona.

He represented Netherlands at four major tournaments, including at the 1998 World Cup when they finished fourth, and remains his country's fourth highest scorer of all time with 40 goals from 79 caps.

Nonetheless, his experience as a manager has thus far been limited to a stint with CONCACAF underdogs Curaçao, while he lasted just five months at Adana Demispor after initially signing a two-year contract.

Kluivert will face a baptism of fire with his first game in charge of Indonesia being a World Cup qualifier against continental powerhouses Australia on March 20.

It is worth noting that, under Shin, Indonesia gained plaudits for holding the Socceroos to a 0-0 draw back in September, meaning there will immediately be a point of comparison for the nation's passionate supporter base.

The international window in March will also see Indonesia entertain Bahrain, where they will be looking to maintain their position inside the top four of Group C and keep alive their hopes of advancing to the next round of Asian qualifiers at the very least.

Thomas Tuchel new England manager

Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become England’s manager after talks with the Football Association accelerated on Tuesday. The 51-year-old will be the third foreign manager of the men’s team and the first from Germany.

The FA has had Tuchel on its shortlist for finding Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor since the beginning of the process, a list that also included Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and the interim manager, Lee Carsley, among others.

It zeroed in on Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021 – the highlight on an impressive CV. He has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich in May.

Tuchel, who is expected to address the media at Wembley on Wednesday, follows Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello in taking the job as an overseas head coach. The FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, who led the recruitment process alongside the technical director, John McDermott, has long been clear that nationality should be no barrier to the role.

Bullingham made the point during the European Championship in June that the England women’s head coach, Sarina Wiegman, is Dutch. In other words, the FA was and is perfectly happy to put its trust in someone from outside England.

Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, has announced he will retire from professional tennis at the end of the season after next month’s Davis Cup Finals.

Nadal has won 22 grand slam titles, placing him second on the men’s all-time list behind Novak Djokovic with 24. Fourteen of those came at Roland Garros, a tournament he has dominated unlike any player in the sport’s history, compiling an unprecedented 112-4 record. Nadal has won all four major titles multiple times and spent 209 weeks at No 1.

Manchester City - Bayern Munich

Holders Real Madrid have been drawn to face Chelsea in the Champions League quarterfinals, while Manchester City will play Bayern Munich.

The winner of those two ties will face each other in the semifinals, which was also drawn on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland.

Madrid knocked out Chelsea in last year's quarterfinal in dramatic fashion amid a spirited second-leg comeback from the Premier League club.

Pep Guardiola is looking to guide City to their first-ever Champions League title but must face a return to Munich to do so. The Spanish coach spent three years as Bayern head coach between 2013 and 2016 and faces stiff competition in Julian Nagelsmann's side, who knocked out Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round.

Elsewhere, this season's knockout stages see three Italian teams featuring in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.

Inter Milan will take on Benfica in the quarterfinals, while their local rivals AC Milan were drawn to face Serie A leaders Napoli.

The quarterfinal first legs will take place April 11-12, with the return legs held April 18-19. The semifinals will be staged on May 9-10 and May 16-17.

This year's final will be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on June 10.

Manchester United for sale

Manchester United owners the Glazer family have announced they are open to selling the club.

United issued a statement on Tuesday to reveal they are "exploring strategic alternatives" including new investment or a full sale. The Glazers completed their takeover in 2005, but have faced fierce opposition to their ownership from supporters, particularly for saddling the club with huge amounts of debt following their leveraged buy-out.

The statement released on Tuesday read: "Manchester United announces today that the board is commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives for the club.

"The process is designed to enhance the club's future growth, with the ultimate goal of positioning the club to capitalize on opportunities both on the pitch and commercially.

"As part of this process, the board will consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company.

"This will include an assessment of several initiatives to strengthen the club, including stadium and infrastructure redevelopment, and expansion of the club's commercial operations on a global scale, each in the context of enhancing the long-term success of the club's men's, women's and academy teams, and bringing benefits to fans and other stakeholders."

The news comes on the same day that Manchester United announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would leave the club after a "mutual agreement" was reached by the two parties. Ronaldo's departure comes on the heels of last week's interview with Piers Morgan in which he blasted the club and its new manager Erik ten Hag for disrespecting him.

If United were to be sold outright, the club would be expected to fetch a price far in excess of the £2.5 billion paid for Chelsea by a consortium fronted by LA Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehley in May.

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, who also bid for Chelsea, has said he would be interested in buying United, but insisted in October that the Glazers did not want to sell.

The Raine Group have been named as United's "exclusive financial advisor" after handling the sale of Chelsea earlier this year.

Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer said as part of the statement issued on Tuesday: "The strength of Manchester United rests on the passion and loyalty of our global community of 1.1 billion fans and followers.

"As we seek to continue building on the club's history of success, the board has authorized a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives.

"We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.

"Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders."
