Told to go on unpaid leave, Malaysians in Singapore find themselves in limbo

SINGAPORE, April 20 — When the Malaysian movement control order (MCO) took effect on March 18, Cannie Leo scrambled here to secure a S$800 (RM2,456) room in Woodlands with a friend, so that she could continue working for a construction firm here.

Weeks later, Singapore announced that it was implementing its circuit breaker on April 7, which required all “non-essential” businesses to cease operations for a month.

Leo’s employers asked her to take a month of unpaid leave, and the 27-year-old administrative assistant found herself in a fix.

“I have less than S$200 in savings to live in Singapore for the rest of the month. The money I saved in my Malaysian bank account is not even enough to cover my bills for next month, which is more than RM3,000,” she said.

Up until the MCO took effect, the Johor resident used to shuttle across the Causeway daily.

Leo earns about S$1,400 a month from her current job.

“My friends are also on unpaid leave, so I’m not sure who I can borrow money from,” she added.

Like Leo, many Malaysians who have chosen to remain in Singapore to work during the MCO have found themselves caught in a quandary. Most have been asked to take unpaid leave during the circuit breaker and are unable to take on part-time jobs by law.

Many are waiting for the government to announce its plans after the circuit breaker ends on May 4 before deciding on their next steps.

GERIK - Kerajaan dijangka membayar sebanyak RM1.08 bilion dalam bentuk pampasan kepada 23 syarikat konsesi membabitkan 30 lebuh raya seluruh negara sekiranya tiada kenaikan kadar tol, kata Menteri Kerja Raya, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Beliau berkata, kerajaan terpaksa membayar pampasan RM580 juta kepada syarikat konsesi ketika ini, jika kadar tol tidak dinaikkan.

"Bayangkan jika kadar tol meningkat, wang ini (pampasan) boleh digunakan untuk tujuan lain seperti membina jalan raya, sekolah serta hospital yang masih memerlukan pembangunan.

"Adakah kerajaan mampu untuk membayar pampasan? Itulah yang perlu diambil kira. Jika kami membenarkan kenaikan tol, kami juga perlu mengambil kira kepentingan rakyat yang tidak mahu kenaikan itu dilaksanakan," katanya.

Beliau berkata demikian selepas merasmikan Tugu Peringatan Jalan Raya Timur-Barat (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli, Kelantan di sini, hari ini.

Fadillah berkata, kenaikan kadar tol tidak dilaksanakan sejak 2008 dan syarikat konsesi telah mencadangkan supaya kenaikan bayaran kadar tol dikaji semula.

"Syarikat konsesi layak meminta kenaikan kadar tol, ada yang perlu dikaji semula setiap tiga tahun, ada yang lima tahun dan ada yang tujuh tahun.

"Kerajaan masih boleh mengimbangkan dan masih boleh membayar pampasan kepada syarikat konsesi dan untuk itu juga sebarang kenaikan kadar tol memerlukan inisiatif tertentu supaya rakyat tidak terasa beban," katanya.

Sehubungan itu, banyak faktor perlu dipertimbangkan sebelum membenarkan kadar kenaikan itu bagi memastikan ia tidak membebankan rakyat.

Beliau berkata kenaikan kadar tol perlu dipertimbangkan kerana ia membabitkan kepentingan banyak pihak termasuk pelabur dan pemberi pinjaman kerana ia turut memberi kesan terhadap keyakinan pelabur. - Bernama

There are major plans for a huge entertainment complex where Disneyland meets Vegas in Zimbabwe.

THE Zimbabwean tourism minister has outlined a scheme to build a US$300mil (RM986.5mil) entertainment complex, with banks and casinos, near Victoria Falls.

The formula has worked in California, Florida and Paris. Now officials in Zimbabwe, eager to rebrand a country notorious for economic collapse and political violence, want to build a “Disneyland in Africa”.

Walter Mzembi, the tourism and hospitality minister, told New Ziana, the official news agency, that the government was planning a US$300mil (RM986.5mil) theme park near Victoria Falls, the country’s top tourist attraction.

Mzembi was quoted as saying the resort would be a “Disneyland in Africa”, although he did not appear to suggest that the statue of explorer David Livingstone, which overlooks the falls, would be supplanted by a jobbing actor in a Mickey Mouse costume.

Instead, he outlined plans for shopping malls, banks and exhibition and entertainment facilities such as casinos. “We have reserved 1,200 hectares of land closer to Victoria Falls international airport to do hotels and convention centres,” Mzembi told New Ziana on the sidelines of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly , which Victoria Falls is co-hosting with the town of Livingstone in neighbouring Zambia.

“We want to create a free zone with a banking centre where even people who do not necessarily live in Zimbabwe can open bank accounts,” he said.

The government has plans to invest US$150mil (RM493.3mil) in expanding the town’s airport to accommodate bigger aircraft, according to the report from Ziana. Mzembi said the government had found funding partners including multilateral financial institutions.

Visitors travel from across the world to see Victoria Falls where water plummets more than 100m into the Zambezi gorge, generating mists of spray so high they can be seen up to 30 miles (48km) away. A bridge linking Zimbabwe and Zambia offers bungee jumping but made headlines for the wrong reasons last year when an Australian tourist narrowly survived her cord snapping.

The nearby town offers few reasons to linger or spend money, however, despite the launch last month of an open-top bus tour in an attempt to drum up interest. Mzembi hopes to appeal to a younger market.

Zimbabwe’s considerable tourism potential was devastated by a decade of conflict and hyperinflation but has recovered in recent years. The government says it recorded a 17% increase in tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2013, up 346,299 to 404,282. It has predicted the tourism sector will contribute 15% to GDP by 2015 if the country remains stable.

Following a mostly peaceful, though bitterly disputed, election last month, Zimbabwe’s co-hosting of the UNWTO conference this week is seen as another milestone towards that stability. But the decision to award the conference to Zimbabwe as a co-host was condemned by the independent UN Watch human rights group as a “disgraceful show of support – and a terribly timed award of false legitimacy – for a brutal, corrupt and authoritarian regime.

Hillel Neuer, head of the Geneva-based group, added: “Amid reports of election rigging and continuing human rights abuses, Zimbabwe is the last country that should be legitimised by a UN summit of any kind. The notion that the UN should spin this country as a lovely tourist destination is, frankly, sickening.”

PETALING JAYA: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has been taken to task for running the country down during an official mission to woo foreign investors in Hong Kong.

SEMUT (Sensible and Ethical Malaysian United Team) president Huan Cheng Guan said Lim had to justify the use of state funds to go abroad with a delegation only to run down the Government and the country.

“Lim must explain why he persisted in running down and shaming our country in a most unethical manner,” he said.

Lim had taken part in a state investment delegation to Hong Kong at the same time as another mission by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed on Sept 5.

Huan said Lim gave a false impression to the audience that Malaysia was not a safe place.

He lambasted Lim for claiming that the Federal Government had resorted to phoney measures to cut costs.

“Would any sane investor want to invest in Penang or Malaysia after hearing this from a state leader?” asked Huan.

He also slammed Lim for claiming that Barisan Nasional had avoided tackling real problems such as crime, corruption, rising debts, declining education standard and productivity and workforce issues.

AES Is Important Over All The Issue Raised

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir stressed today that the importance of implementing the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) overrode all the issues raised against it.

He said Malaysia's level of road safety was critical with the ever increasing accidents and many fatalities.

Due to the negative attitude of motorists in general, issuing summonses under the AES to those who not only endangered their lives but others as well, appeared to be the only way, he said.

"Other countries which have far more vehicles on their roads, have far fewer accidents compared to us," he said after receiving a courtesy call from Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar at his office, here.

Mukhriz said that, therefore, any measure to reduce the rate of accidents, including that taken by the traffic police, would be fully supported by the state government for the well-being of all.

Commenting on his discussions with Khalid, Mukhriz said the state government had assured the police that it would not compromise on entertainment outlets which contravened the law and would fully back any stern action taken against them. He also raised concerns about smuggling activities at Kedah's border, in particular firearms.

"I understand that it's impossible to check every individual and every vehicle which crosses the border. But we need to curb unwanted elements from entering our country," he said.

He added that despite the high cost of installing scanners at entry points, as proposed by the Home Ministry, it would be worthwhile compared to the losses from the smuggling in of drugs and firearms. -- Bernama

Movie 43: why did so many Hollywood stars sign up for the humiliation?

Critics have described grossout comedy Movie 43 as the worst film of all time. So how did the likes of Halle Berry, Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman end up starring in it?

Every director dreams of being compared to Orson Welles. But having your new film labelled "the Citizen Kane of awful" might not be quite what Peter Farrelly had in mind. Movie 43, which opened worldwide last Friday, wasn't actually screened for critics before release. Yet a handful braved the multiplex and paid anyway. Unbuttered by PR largesse, few resisted the chance to unleash both barrels.

"There's awful and THEN there's Movie 43," wrote Richard Roeper in the Chicago Sun-Times. For Peter Howell of the Toronto Star, it is the "worst film ever", and "biggest waste of talent in cinema history". David Edelstein offered cheery counterpoint to the chorus. "It's rare to see a piece of shit that actually looks and sounds like a piece of shit," he wrote in New York magazine. "It's kind of exciting!"

Such a pitch of criticism is proportionate to the expectations one might entertain for a film made by the man behind There's Something About Mary and fronted by a cast which includes two of this year's Oscar nominees – Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts – as well as the master of ceremonies (Seth MacFarlane). Other big hitters beaming from the poster include Kate Winslet, Uma Thurman, Terrence Howard, Richard Gere, Emma Stone, Liev Schreiber, Gerard Butler, Anna Faris, Johnny Knoxville, Chloë Moretz, Seann William Scott and Jason Sudeikis.

The only person who has consistently defended the film is Farrelly, who earlier this week fired back at his critics on Twitter, saying: "Movie 43 is not the end of the world. It's just a $6m movie where we tried to do something different. Now back off … "

The strategy is smart. By focusing attention on its small budget, he can highlight the ease with which it will make money. Such comedies aren't just critic-proof; their prospects are actively boosted by mainstream condemnation. Already in the US, the film has taken $4.8m – not the jackpot, but not peanuts. In Russia, the figure is $8.5m.

And yesterday, figures for the UK came through to reveal a weekend total of £787,648, and a screen average of £2,875. Zero Dark Thirty's, for the record, is £2,426.

IRAN: Israel Faces 'Grave Consequences' For Bombing Syria

Both Syrian and Iran are making bold threats following a surprise Israeli airstrike in Syrian territory on Wednesday.

Iran's deputy foreign minister told state TV that the "Israeli bombing in Syria will have grave consequences on Tel Aviv," Haaretz reports.

On Saturday a top aide to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that any "attack on Syria is considered (an) attack on Iran and Iran’s allies.”

Syria's ambassador to Lebanon said the Damascus has "the option and the surprise to retaliate," Al Jazeera reports.

Early Wednesday Israeli jets bombed a target in southwest Syria.

Syria, Iran and Hezbollah contend that the Israeli target was a military research center in Jamraya, three miles from Damascus and eight miles from the Lebanese border.

U.S. officials, Syrian rebels and regional security sources told Reuters the warplanes hit a weapons convoy carrying antiaircraft missiles from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon while rebels attacked the facility at about the same time with "six 120 millimetre mortars."

Either way there is no doubt that the Israeli strike has raised the geopolitical conflict in the region to the next level. Mark Urban of Newsnight details how the attack is one more sign of an alarming deterioration of the security situation across the Middle East.

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi condemned the strike, saying that the "Israeli aggression... is a clear violation of the territory of an Arab state and of its sovereignty, going against the UN charter and the rules of international law."
Russia's foreign ministry said that "we are dealing with unprovoked attacks on targets on the territory of a sovereign country, which blatantly violates the UN Charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motives to justify it."

Israeli security chief Yaakov Amidror is currently in Russia to discuss the Syrian crisis while Israel Defense Force intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi is in Washington for consultations with American officials.

On Tuesday Israeli Minister of Home Front Defence Avi Dichter told Israel Radio that options to prevent Syria from using or transferring chemical or conventional weapons included deterrence and “attempts to hit the stockpiles."

Diplomats in the Middle East familiar with Jamraya told Reuters that the sprawling complex is a crucial element of Syria's missile program that also has a chemical weapons facility.

A Free Syrian Army statement said that Iranian, Russian and Hezbollah members were at the complex helping develop chemical and other weapons including 'barrel bombs' used by Assad's air force.

Agence France-Presse notes that earlier this week Israel transferred two batteries of its Iron Dome anti-missile system to the the country's north, and demand for gas masks almost tripled in January.

Former top military intelligence official Danny Rothschild recently told army radio that Israel "could face an attack by Hezbollah or possibly Syria, that's why we must prepare our defences and Iron Dome is part of that."

On Tuesday Israeli Air Force (IAF) chief Major-General Amir Eshel told an international aerospace conference that the IAF was involved in "a campaign between wars," working with Israeli intelligence agencies in often covert missions "to reduce the immediate threats [and] to create better conditions in which we will be able to win the wars, when they happen."

Dilemma between family business or career

Hi need some advice over my current situation.

I am just about a year before my graduation and being the only son, I am being pressured by my parents to work their business as an industrial painting contractor.

They have already owned several sites around the states.

However, from my experience on working with them in my holidays, I realize it requires a lot of networking between people in the sector and I might face a tough problem here.

I am somewhat a banana (not being able to converse in Mandarin except for Cantonese) and I have a lot of problem communicating with their clients who rather speak in Mandarin.

Currently, I am graduation in my Mass Communication Degree. My seniors have they told me that the career in Communication emphasize more towards English-orientated language.

I do not mind helping my parents but the language barrier seems almost impossible for me to overcome.

Should I just seek my field-related career or venture into a job in the contracting business and see how it goes?
