Is it motherboard or hardisk?

hi guys.

i am having a problem after i reinstall my xp.

supposedly the IDE cable connected to 3 devices, 1 DVD ROM and 2 HDISK.

unfortunately, in the beginning the IDE can only detect my primary hardisk, the other 2 devices cannot be detected in BIOS.

i can boot into windows and having no problem....

later on, when i try to start up my pc, i was shocked that my primary hardisk is no longer being detected by BIOS.

i played around with IDE cable, plug here plug there and it was found that when the IDE cable is being connected to the DVD ROM, the device is being

detected in my BIOS. when i tried to connect the IDE cable to the hardisks, both devices failed to be detected in BIOS.

my question is, the root cause of my problem is it on the motherboard side or the hardisks? At first i suspected that the IDE slot on my mobo to be

spoilt but when connected to the dvd rom it working perfectly.

any advices or suggestions? by the way i am using MSI NEO2 845 mobo and 120gb x 2 Maxtor hardisk.

thanks.
