Wireless Devices cannot connect to modem-router

I just got a new D-Link Wireless N ADSL2+Modem Router and set it up. I have no problem with internet access using any pcs or notebooks connected directly to the router.

However, there is a problem with trying to connect using wifi.

If I set the wifi security to OPEN, all my laptops can connect to the internet.
If I use WEP with a 13 character PW, none of my notebooks can connect. The network can be detected but when I enter the pw, no connection can be made.

What did I do wrong? Can anyone help?
