I Cannot Check

So I lost my wallet. Had to report police, block cards, make new IC and license... Yeah pain in the... but that's not the point. This particular bank, which we will call HapiLoli Bank, is by far, like 100 miles, the most amusing...

As soon as I realize my wallet is not going to be found, I began my quest. First, block cards to prevent being pwned by the plastic demons of the world, and so calling their customer service...

Okay so why the fuss with credit control? Just to be clear, this is a spare card and has like at most RM100 outstanding. And, I have an account there with more than enough to cover. The most mind boggling is, the next CS just blocks it no questions asked.

Someone from credit control called me back later that day and the call went something like this:

Credit guy: Bro, you want cancel this card ar? why ar?

Me: Yalah this card rarely use la. Now lost oledy so might as well cancel it la.

Credit guy: Oh lidat no problem one, just go branch settle the RM 6x.xx (less than RM65) then can close one.

Me: Can can, next week I go. I lost wallet very leceh. The one at <insert branch> can?

Credit guy: Ya okok no worries.

No fuss right? Well think again...
Days gone by, I got my new NRIC and driver's license, off I went to the HapiLoli Bank branch in <insert branch>.

So... the branch can't check your card balance but you have to go there to cancel it. And of course settle whatever outstanding. How does that work?
This lady at the branch "cannot check", and the CS lady at the call center "cannot check". Only credit control people can and they obviously don't work 24/7...

The ironic part is when I want to pay them an estimated sum that should be more than I owe, suddenly the supervisor can fetch a screen with the outstanding amount including the "late penalty". Oh my lady, you're like Holy Mary, where were you when these evil creatures were running this show?

I and my buddy who fetched me there, had a good laugh about that one later on (wasn't so funny before tho). If a bank can't check your customer's balance, why oh why do you issue those cards in the bank's name? The next joke is, to deduct the outstanding from my HapiLoli Bank account I need to bring my bank book. No there isn't an internet service you can use. I kid you not. We still doing afros with bell bottoms going flower power?

TL;DR:

Customer service cannot block card if got outstanding. Call credit control. If it's non-office hours, you're sh*t out of luck.

Bank branch and customer service cannot give you outstanding balance. You call credit control.

HapiLoli Bank is seriose biznes with RM 6x.xx.

"Cannot check" is the new motto for HapiLoli Bank.
