Bonobo Extreme Ubuntu GAMING LPTP~!

QUOTE

Now that Steam will be available for Ubuntu any time now, you might be interested in taking a look at System76's latest and greatest Ubuntu-powered laptop designed specifically for the gaming enthusiast: the Bonobo Extreme. The open-source machine-maker has made Ubuntu PCs before, like the Gazelle and Serval laptops and the recent Sable Complete all-in-one, but none come close to the Bonobo Extreme in terms of speed and performance. The base model is tricked out with an Intel i7 3630QM 2.4GHz processor, an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 670MX 3GB GPU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive, an 8x DVD drive, an 8-cell battery and a 17.3-inch glossy, backlit display. At this configuration, it's already quite the wallet-buster at $1,499 (and that's after the $100 Christmas discount), but you can push that sum skyward fairly easily if you're a stickler for premium components. But perhaps its beautiful backlit keyboard, spacious Synaptics Clickpad and the sheer satisfaction of shooting Left 4 Dead zombies will help soothe the financial pain.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/19/system76-bonobo-extreme/

ubuntu + gaming?

Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force

QUOTE

Mercedes-Benz’s entry for this year’s Los Angeles Design Challenge at the LA Auto Show is this radical looking beast called the Ener-G-Force. While the design theme this year is titled “Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025,” the Merc entry offers a civilian take on things.

Seems the notion of designing tomorrow’s off-roader fascinated the designers at the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio in Carlsbad, California to such an extent that they evolved the vision of a police version into a civilian version and even came up with a full-scale model of the design.

Like the police version, the model of the civilian Ener-G-Force draws its inspiration from the iconic G-Class, though things have certainly been considerably reinterpreted. Meaty would be a good descriptor for the concept, which displays a high shoulder line and scaled-down glass areas.

Design elements include a roof carrier and additional lamps which are integrated into the roof and a slightly off-centre pull-out toolbox compartment at the rear, the cover of which borrows its look from the spare wheel carrier of the classic G-Class. The pull-out box offers easy access stored equipment without having to open the whole lift-gate.

The Ener-G-Force is hydrogen-powered, and runs on water – the vehicle stores recycled water in tanks on the roof, and transfers it to the “hydro-tech converter,” which converts natural and renewable resources into hydrogen for operating the fuel cells.

Drive is courtesy of four wheel-hub motors, whose output for each individual wheel – which are 20-inch jobs – is adapted precisely to the respective terrain by high-performance electronics. Operating range is an impressive 800 km.

Features include a “Terra-Scan” 360-degree topography scanner on the roof, which continuously scans surroundings and uses the results to adjust the spring/damping rates as well as other suspension parameters for the best traction possible on any surface.

http://paultan.org/2012/11/19/mercedes-ben...ed-up-for-2025/

i cnanot accept the design

New York cop pleads not guilty to cannibal plot

NEW YORK: A New York police officer pleaded not guilty Monday to plotting to kidnap, cook and eat up to 100 women.

“Not guilty,” Gilberto Valle told a federal judge in Manhattan when asked how he pleaded to one count of kidnapping and one of illegally accessing a restricted computer database.

Valle, 28, is accused of plotting with an unnamed co-conspirator to use chloroform to knock out women, then bring them back to his home where he was allegedly planning to cook them in an oven, on a spit, or roasting in a cage.

The serving police officer allegedly exchanged detailed emails about the plan with the co-conspirator and accessed a police database to collect information on his victims.

A search of his computer allegedly revealed files kept on at least 100 women, each with a name and photograph and often personal details such as address and descriptions. No women came to harm in what Valle’s attorney says was merely an online fantasy.

Valle, wearing a blue jail smock to his hearing, spoke clearly, but did not show any emotion.

On Tuesday, his lawyer, Julia Gatto, was to argue for release on bail.

However, Judge Paul Gardephe pointed out that this had already been rejected by two other judges and “you will have a hard row to hoe.” AFP

Read more: New York cop pleads not guilty to cannibal plot - Latest - New Straits Times http://www.nst.com.my/latest/new-york-cop-...3#ixzz2Ciz357kJ

Tenaga lebih 'muda' berbanding usia

QUOTE

"Jika minyak hitam perlu ditukar baharu, manusia tidaklah perlu sehingga menukar darah.

"Apabila segala maklumat latar belakang kesihatan pesakit diperoleh termasuk ujian darah, barulah pelan rawatan disediakan," katanya.

this is safe ka?

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/content.asp?...ma&pg=ru_01.htm

QUOTE

At least 105 people have died in the Gaza Strip in six days of violence, Hamas officials say, as Israeli forces continue their bombardment.

Monday's fatalities include a commander of the Islamic Jihad militant group and a couple and their two small children.

More than 100 rockets were fired on Israel on Monday, but no casualties were reported. Last week, three Israelis died in one such attack.

The Israeli cabinet has been meeting to discuss an Egyptian ceasefire proposal.

The content of the Egyptian plan is not known, but both Israel and Hamas have presented conditions.

Israel's include no hostile fire of any kind from Gaza and international efforts to prevent Hamas from rearming, while Hamas is demanding an end to the blockade on Gaza and "Israel's assassinations".

Egypt has been leading efforts to broker a peace deal, with both senior Israeli and Hamas officials in Cairo for talks. An Egyptian official said he hoped to be able to make an announcement on Monday or Tuesday.

Uzi Landau, Israeli cabinet minister: Country forced to the point of war by "continued bombardment" from Gaza

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has also arrived in Cairo to aid negotiating efforts. He plans to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the coming days.

US President Obama spoke to his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Mursi and to Mr Netanyahu on Monday and "discussed ways to de-escalate the situation in Gaza," the White House said in a statement.

Mr Obama "underscored the necessity of Hamas ending rocket fire into Israel" in his call to Mr Mursi, and "expressed regret for the loss of Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives" in both calls.

Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said Moscow might propose a Security Council resolution calling for an end to violence on both sides.

He said that an unnamed Security Council member, apparently the US, was delaying Arab attempts to adopt a lower-level statement on the crisis.
'Terrorist state'

Khaled Meshaal, the political leader of the Islamist movement Hamas which controls Gaza, said earlier that a truce was possible in Gaza - as was further escalation of the conflict.

"We are for a ceasefire," Mr Meshaal said, "but Israel must stop its aggression."

Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan described Israel as a "terrorist state", citing the "massacre of children" during its bombardments of Gaza.

Once cordial relations between Turkey and Israel soured after Israeli marines stormed a Turkish aid ship in 2010 during a naval blockade of Gaza.

Hamas officials gave details of several fatalities during Monday afternoon which pushed the Palestinian death toll above 100.
Analysis
image of Jonathan Marcus Jonathan Marcus BBC diplomatic correspondent

In truth there is little enthusiasm in Israel - either in the government or among the military top brass - for a ground incursion into the Gaza Strip.

Israeli military analysts believe that a large part of Israel's military goals were achieved during the opening two days of this conflict.

As the air campaign goes on, Israel faces diminishing returns.

The increase in the number of civilian casualties inflicted in the Gaza Strip, and the consequent shift in international support for Israel, probably weighs more heavily than any modest advantages in terms of destroying additional rockets or Hamas infrastructure.

    Gaza: Avoiding a ground war
    Mid-East press fears Gaza invasion

A leading figure in the militant group Islamic Jihad, named as Ramez Harb, was killed as a building housing media workers was struck.

Later, a couple and two children aged two and four were killed in an air strike on Beit Lahiya, Gaza's health ministry said.

Six others were killed in four separate attacks, AFP quoted emergency services as saying, and four people died of injuries sustained on Sunday.

A Palestinian youth was killed in the southern West Bank town of Hebron, apparently after protests against the attacks in Gaza, reports say.

At least nine children were killed in Gaza on Sunday - the bloodiest day so far - and TV reports showing images of their burned and bloodied bodies have been fuelling Palestinian anger, says the BBC's Jon Donnison in Gaza City. In one strike, nine members of the family of Hamas policeman Mohamed Dalou were killed - four of them children.

The army's chief military spokesman, Yoav Mordechai, told Israel's Channel 2 TV that the intended target of the strike had been Yehiya Rabiyah, the head of Hamas's rocket-launching unit, but admitted that there had been civilian casualties.

Later, the IDF told the BBC that the house had been targeted because it was thought Mr Rabiyah might be hiding there, but officials did not know whether he was inside at the time of the attack.
War or peace?

Mr Netanyahu said on Sunday that he was ready to expand the operation, after Israel authorised the mobilisation of up to 75,000 army reservists.

Since the conflict began, 877 rockets have been fired towards Israel, the IDF says, with 570 landing in Israel and 307 intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system.

Before the recent offensive, Israel had repeatedly carried out air strikes on Gaza as Palestinian militants fired rockets across the border.

But the aerial and naval bombardment is its most intense assault on the territory since Israel launched a full-scale invasion four years ago.

Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, a year after winning a decisive victory in general elections. Israel withdrew from the strip in 2005 but maintains a blockade around it.

Israel, as well as the United States and the European Union, regards Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20391558

In the can — liquid cocaine in cans

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities are still busy opening some 23,000 cans of canned pineapples and coconut milk, believed to contain 76kg of cocaine worth at least RM22mil.

Only 30% of the cargo have been inspected so far, with 384 cans found to contain 200gm of the liquidised drug each.

Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police had received a tip-off from the US Drug Enforcement Administration that the drug shipment from Guyana, South America, was expected to make a stop in Port Klang en route to Mozambique.

“We decided to work together with the Selangor Customs Department. A day after the ship docked at Port Klang, we boarded it at 2am on Nov 12 to inspect the containers.

“Inside one container, we found 980 boxes of canned processed pineapple and coconut milk,” he told reporters in Bukit Aman here yesterday.

After opening almost 100 cans on the ship and analysing the contents with a portable drug testing kit, the team finally hit pay dirt when one was found positive with cocaine.

The cargo was then seized and handed over to the police forensics and chemistry laboratory.

So far, they found 384 cans with liquidised cocaine inside and did not discount the possibility of discovering more.

A police source said the drug syndicate based in Guyana could be “powerful” as it had the means of packing the drugs into cans and the even more sophisticated technique of mixing cocaine with other liquid.

“The syndicate probably has some kind of special marking on the boxes with cocaine. But because we don't have that information, we have to go through the time-consuming process of opening and inspecting every can,” said the source.

It is learnt that the cargo was to have been transferred to another ship in Port Klang before continuing its journey to Mozambique, where some sort of distillation technique would be used to extract the cocaine.

Each can was labelled with printed information that it was manufactured in Guyana and weighed about 400gm. The cans with cocaine had about 200gm of the liquidised drug.

Comm Noor Rashid said Interpol and all relevant international drug monitoring agencies had been notified of the seizure.

Investigations, he said, were now under way in both the originating and destination countries.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...2064&sec=nation

muahahahahahah i drink coke!

Investments in Malaysian defence industry RM5BIL

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR: Local and international defence industry players have been actively involved in various projects in Malaysia with investments reaching RM5bil.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Government was committed to seeing the defence industry expand in tandem with the increasing demand for such products in the Asian region.

“This is especially so following the Meeting of Asean Defence Ministers in Cambodia last month, which decided to bolster cooperation in the defence industry among member states,” he said after attending a meeting of the Malaysia Industry Council for Defence, Enforcement and Security (Mides) yesterday.

Zahid said the Cabinet had approved the building of an industrial plant, an educational centre and defence industry manufacturing facility in Perak, whereby the state government had approved the land for the project.

On the “Indodefence 2012” exhibition in Jakarta last month, he said the active participation of Malaysia's defence industry in the exhibition had attracted the interest of international companies.

He said among the products that drew the visitors' attention and orders was the Maxus Weststar Model V80 passenger van produced by Maxus Weststar.

Malaysia's defence industry continued to move forward through strategic cooperation among the government agencies like Matrade and Mida, and this helped Mides to promote and expand business in the Asian region, he added.
Malaysians among the world’s top workaholics

QUOTE

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians are proving to be among the world's biggest workaholics, with almost 90% of the workforce working even when they are on holiday.

According to Expedia's 2012 Vacation Deprivation Survey, Malaysia has the world's fourth most dedicated workforce, after India, Brazil and Italy, with employees who can't seem to “let go” of their work during vacations.

Conducted based on 8,000 employed adults from 22 countries throughout the globe, the survey also revealed that Malaysians spent about 40 hours a week at work but received only an average of 14 days of annual leave, among the lowest in the world.

The survey, by the online travel website, also found that despite the limited number of days, Malaysians, on average, did not use about 7% of their leave.

The main reasons cited by respondents for not using up their leave include the option of carrying-forward their leave to the next calendar year, and being unable to coordinate travel dates with their travel partners.

A shocking 40% of the respondents said they were reluctant to go on vacation because they feared their bosses would not be happy about it.

About 15% were worried that going on holiday would reflect negatively on their careers.

“It is worrying that so many Malaysians feel guilty about going on holiday.

“Studies have shown that employees who take regular breaks to revitalise their minds and bodies are often more productive and effective in the workplace,” said AirAsia Expedia CEO Dan Lynn in a statement yesterday.

The survey found that respondents in most developed nations had cited financial constraints as the main reason for not going on vacation.

Among Malaysians, however, only 9% of the respondents said they would sacrifice a holiday due to limited funds.

Asia proved to be the world's most “vacation-deprived” region, with Asians taking the lowest number of holidays and clocking-in the most number of hours each week.

Europeans, on the other hand, have between 25 and 30 days of leave each year, without taking into account state and religious holidays.

British, Norwegian and Swedish workers said they utilised all 25 days given to them.

The Dutch, on the other hand, work only 35 hours a week, the lowest among the 22 countries surveyed.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...2446&sec=nation

good or bad news?

QUOTE

Touch Laptops: What’s Great—And What’s Not
Jeff Atwood - Coding Horror

I'm a little embarrassed to admit how much I like the Surface RT. I wasn't expecting a lot when I ordered it, but after a day of use, I realized this was more than Yet Another Gadget. It might represent a brave new world of laptop design. How can you not love a laptop that lets you touch Zardoz to unlock it?

(I'll leave the particular unlock gestures I chose to your imagination. Good luck hacking this password, Mitnick!)

We've officially entered the era of touchscreen laptops. Coding Horror's Jeff Atwood looks at how the first entrants in the field are performing, and where we might go from here.

I have an ultrabook I like, but the more I used the Surface, the more obsolete it seemed, because I couldn't touch anything on the screen. I found touch interactions on Surface highly complementary to the keyboard. Way more than I would have ever believed, because I lived through the terror that was Pen Computing. If you need precision, you switch to the mouse or touchpad – but given the increasing prevalence of touch-friendly app and web design, that's not as often as you'd think. Tablets are selling like hotcakes, and every day the world becomes a more touch friendly place, with simpler apps that more people can understand and use on basic tablets. This a good thing. But this also means it is only a matter of time before all laptops must be touch laptops.

I've become quite obsessed enamored with this touch laptop concept. I've used the Surface a lot since then. I own two, including the touch and type covers. I also impulsively splurged on a Lenovo Yoga 13, which is a more traditional laptop form factor.

Touch Laptops: What's Great—And What's Not

One of the primary criticisms of the Surface RT is that, since it is an ARM based Tegra 3 device, it does not run traditional x86 apps. That's likely also why it comes with a bundled version of Office 2013. Well, the Yoga 13 resolves that complaint, because it's a Core i5 Ivy Bridge machine. But there is a cost for this x86 compatibility:

Touch Laptops: What's Great—And What's Not

The size comparison isn't entirely fair, since the Yoga is a 13.3" device, and the Surface is a 11.6" device. But Surface Pro has x86 internals and is otherwise as identical to the Surface RT as Microsoft could possibly make it, and it's still 44% larger and 33% heavier. Intel inside comes at a hefty cost in weight, battery life, and size.

You do get something for that price, though: compatibility with the vast library of x86 apps, and speed. The Yoga 13 is absurdly fast by tablet standards. Its Sunspider score is approximately 150 ms, compared to my iPad 4 at 738 ms, and the Surface RT at 1036 ms. Five hours of battery life might not seem like such a bad tradeoff for six times the performance.

I like the Yoga 13 a lot, and it is getting deservedly good reviews. Some reviewers think it's the best Windows 8 laptop available right now. It is a fine replacement for my ultrabook, and as long as you fix the brain-damaged default drive partitioning, scrape off the handful of stickers on it, and uninstall the few pre-installed craplets, it is eminently recommendable. You can also easily upgrade it from 4 GB to 8 GB of RAM for about $40.

But there were things about the practical use of a touch laptop, subtle things that hadn't even occurred to me until I tried to sit down and use one for a few hours, that made me pause:

The screen bounces when you touch it. Maybe I just have hulk-like finger strength, but touching a thin laptop screen tends to make it bounce back a bit. That's … exactly what you don't want in a touch device. I begin to understand why the Surface chose its "fat screen, thin keyboard" design rather than the traditional "thin screen, fat keyboard" of a laptop. You need the inertia on the side you're touching. The physics of touching a thin, hinged laptop screen are never going to be particularly great. Yes, on the Yoga I can wrap the screen around behind the keyboard, or even prop it up like a tent – but this negates the value of the keyboard which is the biggest part of the touch laptop story! If I wanted a keyboardless tablet, I'd use one of the four I have in the house already. And the UPS guy just delivered a Nexus 10.
A giant touchpad makes the keyboard area too large. On a typical laptop, a Texas size touchpad makes sense. On a touch laptop, giant touchpads are problematic because they push the screen even farther away from your hand. This may sound trivial, but it isn't. A ginormous touchpad makes every touch interaction you have that much more fatiguing to reach. I now see why the Surface opted for a tiny touchpad on its touch and type covers. A touchpad should be a method of last resort on a touch laptop anyway, because touch is more convenient, and if you need true per-pixel precision work, you'll plug in a mouse. Have I mentioned how convenient it is to have devices that accept standard USB mice, keyboards, drives, and so on? Because it is.
Widescreen is good for keyboards, but awkward for tablets. A usable keyboard demands a certain minimum width, so widescreen it is; all touch laptops are going to be widescreen by definition. You get your choice between ultra wide or ultra tall. The default landscape mode works great, but rotating the device and using it in portrait mode makes it super tall. On a widescreen device, portrait orientation becomes a narrow and highly specialized niche. It's also very rough on lower resolution devices; neither the 1366×768 Surface RT nor the 1600×900 Yoga 13 really offer enough pixels on the narrow side to make portrait mode usable. You'd need a true retina class device to make portrait work in widescreen. I began to see why the iPad was shipped with a 4:3 display and not a 16:9 or 16:10 one, because that arrangement is more flexible on a tablet. I frequently use my iPad 4 in either orientation, but the Yoga and Surface are only useful in landscape mode except under the most rare of circumstances.
About 11 inches might be the maximum practical tablet size. Like many observers, I've been amused by the race to produce the largest possible phone screen, resulting in 5" phablets that are apparently quite popular. But you'll also note that even the most ardent Apple fans seem to feel that the 7" iPad mini is an inherently superior form factor to the 10" iPad. I think both groups are fundamentally correct: for a lot of uses, the 3.5" phone really is too small, and the 10" tablet really is too big. As a corollary to that, I'd say anything larger than the 11.6" Surface is far too large to use as a tablet. Attempting to use the 13.3" Yoga as a tablet is incredibly awkward, primarily because of the size. Even if the weight and volume were pushed down to imaginary Minority Report levels, I'm not sure I would want a 13.3" tablet on my lap or in my hands. There must be a reason the standard letter page size is 8½ × 11", right?
All-day computing, or, 10 hours of battery life. The more devices I own, the more I begin to appreciate those that I can use for 8 to 10 hours before needing to charge them. There is truly something a little magical about that 10 hour battery life number, and I can now understand why Apple seemed to target 9-10 hours of battery life in their initial iPad and iPhone designs. A battery life of 4 to 6 hours is nothing to sneeze at, but … I feel anxiety about carrying the charger around, whether I've charged recently or not, and I worry over screen brightness and other battery maximization techniques. When I can safely go 8 to 10 hours, I figure that even if I use the heck out of the device – as much as any human being reasonably could in a single day – I'll still safely make it through and I can stick it in a charger before I go to bed.

To appreciate just how extreme portrait mode is on a widescreen tablet, experience it yourself:

This isn't specific to touch laptops; it's a concern for all widescreen devices. I have the same problem with the taller iPhone 5. Because I now have to choose between super wide or super tall, it is a less flexible device in practice.

The Yoga 13, if representative of the new wave of Windows 8 laptops, is a clear win even if you have no intention of ever touching your screen: It boots up incredibly fast, in a few seconds. It wakes and sleeps incredibly fast, nearly instantaneously. The display is a high quality IPS model. A rotating screen offers a number of useful modes: presentation, (giant) tablet, standard laptop. Touchpad and keyboard work fine; at the very least, they're no worse than the typical PC laptop to me. Does the prospect of using Windows 8 frighten and disturb you? No worries, smash Windows+D on your keyboard immediately after booting and pretend you're using Windows 7.5. Done and done.

It's a nice laptop. You could do far worse, and many have. In the end, the Yoga 13 is just a nice laptop with a touchscreen slapped on it. But the more I used the Yoga the more I appreciated the subtle design choices of Surface that make it a far better touch laptop. I kept coming back to how much I enjoyed using the Surface as the platonic ideal of what touch laptops should be.

Yes, it is a bummer that the only currently available Surface is ARM based and does not run any traditional Windows apps. It's easy to look at the x86 performance of the Yoga 13 and assume that Windows on ARM is a cute, temporary throwback to Windows NT on Alpha or MIPS which will never last, and understandably so. Do you see anyone running Windows on Alpha or MIPS CPUs today? But I'm mightily impressed with the Tegra 3 SOC (system-on-a-chip) that runs both the Surface RT and the Nexus 7. Upcoming Tegra releases, all named after superheroes, promise 75 times the performance of Tegra 2 by 2014. I can't quite determine how much faster Tegra 3 was than Tegra 2, but even if it is "only" ten times faster by 2014, that's … amazing.

I think we're beginning to uncover the edges of a world where lack of x86 compatibility is no longer the kiss of death it used to be. It's unclear to me that Intel can ever reach equivalent performance per watt with ARM; Intel's ultra-low-end Celeron 847 is twice as fast as the ARM A15, but it's also 17 watts TDP. In a land of ARM chips that pull an absolute maximum of 4 watts at peak, slapping Intel Inside will instantly double the size and weight of your device – or halve its battery life, your choice. Intel's been trying to turn the battleship, but with very limited success so far. Haswell, the successor to the Ivy Bridge CPUs in the Surface Pro and Yoga 13, only gets to 10 watts at idle. And Intel's long neglected Atom line, thanks to years of institutional crippling to avoid cannibalizing Pentium sales, is poorly positioned to compete with ARM today.

Still, I would not blame anyone for waiting on the Surface Pro. A high performance, HD touch laptop in the Surface form factor that runs every x86 app you can throw at it is a potent combination … even if it is 44% larger and 33% heavier.

http://gizmodo.com/5961847/touch-laptops-w...++and-whats-not

Crystal Meth Could Stave Off the Flu! yay!

QUOTE

As winter draws in, the threat of flu looms large. But getting a preventative shot might not be the best line of defense any more—because new research suggests a small dose of crystal meth might be effective, too.

Researchers, from the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan and the University of Regensburg in Germany, have been working together to investigate how methamphetamine interacts with different viral infections. Meth is a widely abused drug and there's a wealth of evidence which suggests chronic use can dramatically increase the risk of picking up viruses, because it suppresses the immune response of the body.

The researchers guessed the same would be true for influenza but, like all good scientists, they had to prove their hypothesis—so they set to testing it out. First, they took human lung cells and nurtured them in the lab, before exposing some of them to cystal meth. They then exposed the cells to the H1N1 influenza virus.

What they observed surprised them. Instead of increasing the rate of development and spread of the virus, meth seems to reduce susceptibility to flu. The results are published in PLoS One.

It's worth pointing out some major caveats here, of course. First, this is an experiment performed using just one strain of flu—we have no idea if meth would be protective against other types in he same way. Second, and perhaps most important, this in an entirely lab-based test: the experiments were performed in a Petri dishes of cells, not on real patients or animal models. And if you're looking for a third caveat, well, just watch Breaking Bad.

The fact remains, though, that the counter-intuitive finding is an interesting one. It certainly suggests that meth users may, weirdly, be at a lower risk of contracting flu than the rest of us. But more interestingly, it could be that compounds similar to meth could be used as effective anti-influenza treatments. Just don't self-prescribe yet, please. [PLoS One]

http://gizmodo.com/5961736/crystal-meth-co...ave-off-the-flu

legalize it?

QUOTE

You know your tablet platform has made it when you've scored a supply deal with an airline, whether it's for the passengers or the staff. Microsoft undoubtedly feels that kind of validation now that Emirates has decided to give Windows 8 PCs a try. The air carrier will eventually outfit all its flights with HP ElitePad 900 slates, each loaded a custom Knowledge Driven Inflight Service (KIS) app, to help crew and customers alike. Attendants will get feedback and a heads-up on what to expect from everyone onboard; passengers will have chances to make their voices heard and upgrade their seat classes on the spot. Only 100 of the tablets will be in use by the end of January, but the 1,000 ElitePads needed for all aircraft should be active before 2013 is over. We just hope the rollout is quick enough to let us splurge on a sleep-friendly seat during a long trip to Dubai.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/19/emirate...o-flight-crews/

WINDOWS 8 ECOSYSTEM WILL RULE THE WORLD!
