International Drivers Permit

Applied for it online through mySIKAP/JPJ website. After payment it says please collect at a JPJ counter.

1) However from some websites I read it says they will deliver it by mail
2) If 1) is wrong and I need to go to a physical counter, do I need to bring any documents (like passport photo) other than the receipt and original drivers license?

Thanks!

GrabFood complaint

Will be keeping things as general as possible as I'd like to keep the name of this restaurant hidden (hence no photos). Have frequented this restaurant physically before and enjoyed their food.

Recently ordered from them through Grabfood. Menu has some variation to the one at the restaurant.

1) I ordered noodles under the "build your own" category. The illustrated photo shows noodles accompanied by some meat and vegetables. The description says soup noodles and nothing more.

2) Clicking into it, you can choose whether you want it spicy or non-spicy, followed by "2 optional add-ons" (additional meat, vege etc.). I ordered additional vege.

3) What I ended up receiving was plain soup noodles and the additional vege. No meat or the original vege as per the illustrated photo.

4) Complained to Grab. They noted that they are "unable to verify the issue", hence no refund. The reason: "The image based on the merchants page is only an illustration".

On one hand it is a small matter, but on the other hand I feel this whole experience is misleading and they should not get away with it

Walk-in passport renewal

The news says that walk-in for passport renewals are only from May 9/16 onward. But I've been hearing from friends and reading some posts on the forum....seems like a lot of walk ins.

Anyone can verify please? And if you managed to walk-in, when and where?

Thanks!

Mouse lag on 4k monitor

Mouse cursor is lagging on my 4k monitor after I connected it to my laptop via HDMI cable. The 4K monitor is currently at 30hz refresh rate (capable of 60hz but I can't change it for some reason) while the laptop is 60hz.

Monitor came with Display port cables, but if I want to connect it to my laptop I need a DP-HDMI converter. Will this fix the problem?

Edit:
HP Elitebook 840 G5 (touchscreen)
Intel® Core™ i5-7300U CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.71 GHz
16GB RAM

In the specsheet it says HDMI 1.4b - Supports 4k resolution up to 60hz.

Does this mean it could be the cable that needs changing?

Sudden surge in RAM using Youtube

I noticed a sharp increase in RAM usage when browsing Youtube on Chrome. Was never the case previously.

Did not install any extensions, and when I try using Incognito mode it seems fine.

Any idea why or what needs to be done to fix this? Thanks.

Edit: 1 Youtube video alone can consume 2-3gb. Tried to uninstall and reinstall, doesn't work.

Is the motherboard really dead?

My friend uses an iPhone X/XS and she dropped it a few days ago. According to her, when she tries to use her camera and flash, there are various problems.

1) Using the default camera app, she can only use 2x zoom, and not 1x.
2) She cannot turn on her flashlight from the quick access
3) Certain apps that require use of the camera (MySejahtera etc.) doesn't work either. She now has to use her front facing camera to sign in
4) However, for some reason, when she uses her Instagram, she can take normal pictures and pictures with flash (I'm not sure if Instagram by default uses the 2x zoom).

Brought her phone to Machines, and they said there's a problem with her motherboard, i.e. basically have to write off the phone.

Anyone encountered this issue before?

Thanks!

How much does it cost to swap number plates?

Understand that the procedures can be found here - https://www.jpj.gov.my/en/web/main-site/ken...bers-procedures

1) Any idea how much the whole process will cost? Other websites also state that it will be much easier to pay a runner.
2) If we do use a runner, I'm guessing the ultimate owner of the vehicle will still have to pay a visit there at least once to thumb print and bring the old vehicle for inspection?

Trying to rent a carpark

I found this agent from a leading property website and contacted them through Whatsapp to rent a carpark.

The agent keeps insisting that I bank in 2 months (including 1 month deposit), only then they will meet me in person to pass me the access card etc. The agent will not accept COD.

These are the details that I have from the website

- Agent's phone number
- Agent's REN ID
- Agent's company name

A quick check on http://search.lppeh.gov.my/ shows that this is a valid ID, although the phone number does not match. I can't tell if it's the same person from their pictures. The Company website also does not list their profile.

It is quite well known that the carpark there is mostly occupied by employees of a big company beside it, and I have provided my business card as proof. What makes me uncomfortable is that the agent is very insistent that I first bank in the full amount, and then will proceed to meet me in person. Is this the norm?

Thanks.

Link Maybank Amex + Visa card under 1 account?

Hello,

First thing to note is that I do not have a savings account with Maybank but have just received the Maybank double Visa + AmEx card. Already activated the pin numbers for both.

The problem I have is that, when I registered on Maybank2U, I would like to link both cards under 1 username. There doesn't seem to be a function that lets me do that. To be more clear about this, I registered using the Visa card. So now when I login I can only see the Visa card, but there is no way to add the AmEx one.

Called the customer hotline and they mentioned that I need to go to a branch. Is this really the only option?

Hi,

Let's say a foreign company called ABC buys shares DIRECTLY from Malaysian company called XYZ. XYZ is a private company/NON-listed company

Is there an explicit law/rule that says XYZ must accept only Malaysian Ringgit from ABC? Can XYZ actually accept USD and not have to convert it back to MYR?

Note: The Bank Negara 75% rule should not apply to this case as this is not considered an export.

Yesterday I got a summon from DBKL for jaywalking

Yesterday two colleagues and I crossed a road at Petaling street and were caught by DBKL officers for jaywalking. Before I start, let me make this clear that in black and white terms of the law, yes, we did commit a misdemeanor.

After we crossed the road (like how thousands of others do at that same road), we were stopped by about 5-6 of these officers. When they first stopped us I thought they wanted us to complete a survey or something. Then when they asked for our IC's I thought they wanted to see if we possibly could've been illegal immigrants or something, which was also strange to me because we were in formal office clothing with our (bank) company tags in plain sight.

Naively, I was the first person to give my IC, which they immediately took and started taking down my details. 1 of my colleagues didn't bring his IC.

I was quite shocked and asked them what offense we committed, to which one of the officers pointed to the overhead bridge about 50 meters down the road which we failed to use. So there we were, facing punishment when we crossed the road in front of all the cars which stopped for the red light.

At that time another officer mentioned that the fine is RM 50 each, 'tapi okay la aku bagi kamu semua chance. Seorang sahaja kena bayar kompaun ini'. Then I said okay, write it for me and I'll pay. What made me hit the roof was when they required us to pay the fine on the spot to some lady sitting with a rotten looking table by the roadside. I said no and then they called their 'sergeant'. He threatened to fine all 3 of us, as well as bring my colleague who forgot his IC to lockup.

Seeing as things were getting slightly out of hand, I went straight to the sergeant after talking to him long enough, he got distracted and didn't attempt to arrest my friend or fine both of them. Instead, I got a new pink ticket (which was different to the original RM 50 ticket that was written out). The ticket states my offense etc etc and that I'm required to pay the fine (doesn't state how much) or attend the magistrates court. 'Sorry boss sebab ambil lama tulis tiket ini. Lebih senang kalau kamu bayar sahaja sekarang' was the last words I receive as I took my ticket and walked off.

During the whole incident, I saw another group of 3 girls get caught, and some people doing the same thing getting away scot free. As to why this may have happened, our law abiding officers 'tak nampak' when I asked or well, use your own imagination.

So now my questions are,

1) What would have been the most effective way of dealing with these officers? I 'think?' they were trying to solicit a bribe. This is besides the point, but no I don't have any details except the badge number of the sergeant which is written on my pink ticket.

2) They threatened to arrest my colleague for not having his IC on him. Can DBKL officers do such a thing?

3) I now have a shiny pink ticket, with details on how and where to pay the fine/attend court. Does anyone here even know what the fine for jaywalking is? And if I do decide to attend court, which I actually just may, what exactly will happen? I'm personally curious about this. Never been to court before.

*P.s Yes, I do think that they are legitimate DBKL officers.

Thanks for reading!

TL/DR, Caught by DBKL officers for jaywalking. I think they wanted a bribe and I refused, so now I got a summon.

Edit: Change the word police to DBKL officers for TLDR sentence.

Car loan. Isn't longer loan term always better?

Hi, basically my question is the same as the topic title.

Let me put down a few numbers to illustrate.

I have RM 150,000 cash right now and decide to buy a second hand car worth RM 150,000. I pay a down-payment of RM 50,000.

Say current FD rates are 3.5%. Car loan repayment rate is 2.5%.

At this moment, I still have RM100,000 in cash and also have a RM100,000 debt on the car.

Wouldn't it be better to put my RM100,000 cash into FD, earn the interest of 3.5% and take a maximum loan period of RM100,000 and pay the 2.5% interest so I can earn the margin? Let's also say the monthly repayment of the loan is well within my means because I can't touch that RM100,000 in the FD.

Correct me if I'm wrong please. Thanks!

Edit: Let's hold all other variables constant. No need to consider cheaper car, inflation, depreciation, maintenance, opportunity costs etc. In this /hypothetical/ scenario I either use the 100K to fully pay up for the car or, put the 100K into FD and take a 100K loan instead.

My question is, is whether firstly, what I mentioned above is correct (There's a gain to be made from taking the loan and using the FD instead of paying the full amount directly). Doesn't matter whether the gain is negligible or not. A gain is a gain.

If not, where did I go wrong? I'm not entirely sure about the effective interest rates part because the effective rates are higher when you calculate the bank loan compared to FD rates. However, when I translate the rates into the numerical amounts, I still gain from putting money into the FD and taking the loan.

Intel S1150 i7 4790 3.6ghz
Gigabyte GA-Z97X Gaming 5 Mainboard
Gigabyte GV-N75TOC Display Card
Kingston RAM Desktop DDR3 8GB PC1600 x 2 units
1TB WD SATA3 HDD
Edit: FSP Raider 650W.
Edit: Cooler Master Elite311 ATX Tower Casing

Acer G237HQL 23' monitor.

Windows 8 64bit.

RM 4480.

Brand new PC. Am I overpaying by too much for this PC? I have not bought it yet by the way. Also, what is important is that I can't make a full overhaul of the specs given to me. I can make requests to make some changes, but they'll be limited.

------

Edit: Spoke to him and was quoted some changes. All else is the same.

1) PSU changed to FSP Aurum Gold 650W

2) About the GPU, this is the one that I'm most interested in changing which has not changed. So if I can change this what should I change it to? Similar price range please which can be supported well by the other parts.

3) Added a new Kingston 240GB V300 (450mb/450mb) SSD.

4) I'll leave the MOBO and everything else as it is

5) I've also been quoted a new monitor, a 24" AOC G2460PQU. From what I know this is prolly a gaming monitor right?

6) Windows 8.1 64 bit.

This one is RM 5200

Am I overpaying by too much for this PC? And would a 16GB RAM be necessary for say...light gaming and very light media work? Sorry I have very little knowledge about these things.

Edit: Already asked about getting a possibly bigger monitor and about putting in an SSD for bootup speeds and my games I guess. I don't play many though (CS GO, L4D2 etc) so am not sure if a big SSD is really necessary.

I don't know how to take care of computers, so I'm guessing I'll need a more powerful one to at least hopefully maintain decent performance for a few years.

Thanks for your help

[Serious] Importing a car from Australia

Hi, I have a few questions...hope they're not too wordy. Thanks in advance!

1) I should be done with my studies by the end of 2014. From what I understand, the car would have to be in my name in Australia for at least 9 months, so I'd have to buy the car by March 2014 at the latest if I plan to come back by year end December 2014. Does it work this way? Or is there a different time frame as to how this works?

2) From http://www.malaysia.org.au/info2.html, it says that I have to return home permanently. I plan to further my studies after obtaining my degree, although I'm not sure where/when I will start as I may need work experience before I can start my masters. Would I be violating this 'permanent return' aspect?

3) Usually, how much does shipping + inspection of the car cost?

4) Is it actually much cheaper to bring back cars from Australia?

5) Are there any other things I have to consider that I missed out on?

Looking particularly at a Mercedes E250.

Thank you!

P.S Posted in Fast and Furious section already...0 response
