To all hotlink (and all other) prepaid subscribers,

Please be aware that with immediate effect, ALL terminated prepaid numbers cannot be re-activated / re-instated / revived / resurrect by any telco provider to be returned to the (previous) owner.

If your number is in grace period (50 days grace period where you cannot call-out but can receive calls for hotlinks) then your account is still active but without validity. All you have to do is perform a reload and stay within the grace period.

If your number has lapse the grace period and become deactivated/terminated (no service). You can no longer get it back.

If that number is of utmost importance to you then there is a "slight" possibility of getting it back by subscribing to a postpaid plan IF the terminated number have been released from the recycled pool.

I am experiencing intermittent service disruptions and was also informed the same by other users with various telcos in my surrounding areas and beyond. Someone pointed me to the notice below and I post here FYI.

I am only now beginning to understand (and appreciate) the impact of spectrum refarming. There are some areas where 3G/4G disruptions are intermittent and some can go on for days. Some users are already telling me of better data connections .....

If you are experiencing intermittent service disruptions, please report to your service providers and check if maintenance/upgrades/refarming is being done to your area.

- Weekly RM6 = 30 minutes <7DAYS CALL>

2. VideoTube Packs
- Weekend RM5 = 10GB <WKND VT>
- Daily RM3 = 3GB <1DAY VT>
- 1Hour RM2 = UNLIMITED <1HOUR VT>

3. Facebook Packs
- Weekly RM5 = 1GB <7DAYS FB>
- Weekend RM1 = UNLIMITED <WKND FB>

Personal Notes:

Add-On Packs can be subscribed on its own (standalone) without any internet plans.
Call packs is lacking punch. Not much savings against MagicSIM plan. May actually costs more overall against recent Xpax plans (IOX, X24, X2).
Substantial cost savings are realized for older Xlite/Xmid/Xpax15 when making regular local calls.
VideoTube packs may be of interest to heavy youtubers. I don't have a need for it though.
Facebook packs. No comment, to each its own.
The most interesting is the Internet Burung Hantu (IBH) add-on pack which is especially value-for-money for older Xpax subscribers.
For older Xpax subscribers (non-MagicSIM), any IBH add-on pack subscription gives you:
a. 64kbps basic internet between 7am-1am (100MB quota) for 30days
b. High speed access between 1am-7am (2GB/10GB quota) for 30days

Current Raya promo (13 June - 14 July) gives unlimited quota but I am in the opinion that even the normal rate IBH-RM5-10GB is still very good value.
For MagicSIM subscribers, the previous NET30/NET40/NET50 internet plans comes with free 10GB IBH.
The new internet plans (MAGIC Packs) does not come with IBH, so the add-on pack will come in handy.
Coverage and network load is dependant on user location and is not the subject of this thread. YMMV.

A Quick Guide to Frugal Data plans

Kindly please note that this is intended as a quick guide with the hope that it will be useful to those who requires such information. Compiling and verifying all the infos here began on 1st December 2015 and I've tried to include as many plans as I'm aware of. The quick guide is intended to-be-reviewed-periodically as required.

Let's begin ...

Not everyone lives right beside a BTS tower having terrific connection rate or amazing speed. Frugal data user usually weigh more towards good coverage, stable connectivity and value-for-money. Some users may even only have one or two viable options to choose from in their area.

To a frugal data user, a plan with long validity is usually preferred. Hence, only selected domestic data plans that fits the purpose are covered here. For a complete telephony tariffs, please refer to the respective telco's website for the latest rates.

Altel data plans (Celcom 2G/3G/4G and Altel 4G on some sites)

RM4 = 200MB data quota with 48 hours validity
RM15 = 500MB data quota with 30 days validity
RM25 = 1GB data quota with extended 90 days validity
RM42 = 2GB data quota with extended 90 days validity
RM58 = 3GB data quota with 30 days validity
RM80 = 5GB data quota with 30 days validity

- The 1GB with 90 days extended validity plan is the sweet spot
- All data plans comes with its own validity. The longest between main account validity and data validity will become the final validity.
- Data plan remains valid and accessible even with zero credit.

Possible usage scenario:

Suitable for frugal/lite data user.
RM25 for 1GB data quota every 90 days, 4 times a year, RM100 total cost for roughly a years usage (360 days).
Suggested for those who has irregular weekly usage pattern where you probably use not even 50MB last week and maybe more than 100MB this week.
Extended validity is available for RM28 to keep account active for 365 days but is not required when subscribing to 90 days data plans.

BuzzMe data plans (Umobile 3G network)

RM5 = 200MB data quota
RM25 = 1GB data quotas
RM60 = 3GB data quota

- BuzzMe data plans does not expire. A no time limit data quota.
- Data quota can be purchased multiple times and added to existing balance.
- Data quota balance is forfeited only upon account termination.

Possible usage scenario:

Adhoc/lite data users within the Umobile coverage area.
Extended validity is available for RM38 to keep account active for 365 days. Any data quota purchased will be available for the entire active duration until depleted.
Finding the nearest dealer may become a hassle. Coverage can become an issue.

Celcom xpax data packs

RM5 = 50MB data quota (chat pack)
RM10 = 150MB data quota (social pack)

- No time limit data quota.
- Data quota can be purchased multiple times and added to existing balance.
- Data quota balance if any is forfeited only upon account termination.
- Cost per/MB is less competitive but its still is a viable option.
- Only available for older xpax/frenz prepaids prior to MagicSIM.

Possible usage scenario:

Suitable for adhoc xpax data users.
Also suitable as backup to main internet plans.

DiGi Idd Internet Club (IIC)
- Not officially advertised on DiGi's website at the moment. Actual IIC subscription period is not clear (probably 1 year)
- RM10 to subscribe with free monthly 1GB quota 64kbps internet. IIC is applicable to both Best prepaid and Smart prepaid
- Recommended for use on DiGi New Best v1 prepaid and coupled with SuperLongLife (365 days extended validity for RM38)

Possible usage scenario:

Sufficient for users who intends to use whatsapp/wechat or any IMs.

Maxis hotlink tablet plan
- For pure data service only, no calls/sms/mms services.
- Starter pack costs RM30 with 1GB quota valid for 1 year
- Add-ons: RM25 = 1GB with 60 days validity, RM45 = 2GB with 1 year validity
- Good value for adhoc/lite data user within Maxis coverage area

Possible usage scenario:

Sufficient for the adhoc data users within maxis coverage area.

Tunetalk data plans (Celcom 2G/3G/4G network)

RM0.88 = 50MB daily
RM3.88 = 200MB daily
RM2 = 100MB weekly
RM12 = 500MB weekly
RM25 = 1GB monthly
RM52 = 3GB monthly
RM68 = 5GB monthly

- For lite users, the weekly RM2 with 100MB quota is the sweet spot.
- Tunetalk gives additional RM20 credit bonus for RM50++ topups which is applicable for purchasing data plan.

Possible usage scenario:

Suitable for lite data users with less than 100MB weekly usage pattern.
Coupled with 365 days extended validity (for RM28), the RM2 weekly plan can be a cost effective data plan for the entire year.

XOX Season Pass (Celcom 2G/3G/4G network)

RM109.90 = 8GB Quota
RM199.90 = 13GB Quota
RM279.90 = 18GB Quota

- A season pass is a bulk quota purchase stored on subscriber's account
- To be used as and when required by activating against existing XOX data plans

Possible usage scenario:

Suitable for adhoc/frugal/lite data user.
The 8GB season pass is best value at the moment
Suitable for medium quota users between 500MB upto 2GB per month
XOX gives 28months validity option for new MNPs and new subscribers
Topups adds towards to existing validity. 1 year extended validity is also available (at RM25)
Quite high startup cost but real good value in the long run

U Mobile Power prepaid free monthly 1GB

This is a cheap and legal method of using up-to 6GB @ RM30 monthly
Get 6 U mobile power prepaid, make the first RM10 topup 5 days apart between each SIM.
Every 5 days, switch SIM, reload RM5 and get 1GB free quota for the month (use-up in 5 days)
5 days x 6 SIMs = 30days of use @ RM30 = 6GB FREE High-Speed total quota
A bit of hassle swapping SIMs and reloading every 5 days
A bit high on the startup cost but 6GB @ RM30 = RM0.005/MB

Cost per Megabyte

Altel : 1GB @ RM25 = RM0.025/MB, 2GB @ RM42 = RM0.021/MB
BuzzMe : 1GB @ RM25 = RM0.025/MB, 3GB @ RM60 = RM0.020/MB
Celcom : 50MB @ RM5 = RM0.10/MB, 150MB @ RM10 = RM0.066/MB
DiGi : IIC @ RM10 (1GB x 12 months @ 64kbps) = Rm0.00083/MB
hotlink : tablet plan @ RM30 = RM0.030/MB, 2GB quota @ RM45 = RM0.0225/MB
Tunetalk : 100MB @ RM2 = RM0.020/MB
XOX : 8GB Season Pass @ RM109.90 = RM0.01375/MB)

BuzzMe prepaid

One of the many MVNOs vying for the market share is BuzzMe (riding on Umobile network). The voice and texting tariff is not very competitive BUT the data plan has one unique feature that only the older Celcom xpax plans can give: no time limit data balance or put it this, data plans purchased does not expire !

Listed below are the standard tariffs, which is not terrific but still reasonable.

Voice calls: 18 sen / minute to all networks
Sms texting: 10 sen to all networks
Data PAYU : 5 sen / MB
Valud added: 1 year extended validity (RM38)
Activations: preloaded with either RM8 or RM30 credit with 30 days validity

BuzzMe data plans are as follows

Smart Surf 200MB for RM5
Smart Surf 1GB for RM25
Smart Surf 3GB for RM60

I foresee a method on optimizing BuzzMe data plan as below.

First, one may get a new BuzzMe prepaid and test it out with 200MB data plan subscription for 30 days.

Second, one will make a RM100 topup and subscribe to 1 year validity extension for RM38.

Let's say one suddenly needs a bigger quota and proceed to add another 3GB data subscription for RM60. Assuming there's a little balance of 100MB left, plus the new 3GB quota and now we have 3.1GB available.

Finally, as long as the account is valid, the data balance remains until used up / exhausted / finished.

What? One forgot to topup after 1 year expiry with lotsa data balance left? No problem, topup to regain validity and continue using the data balance.

Maxis came up with a new plan called Hotlink FAST beginning 1st December 2015. Existing users should make an informed decision which plan is suitable based on one's requirement. The features and tariff for each plan are listed below:

#hotlink rates/features
1. Calls : 12 sen/30 secs to all networks
2. Sms : 7 sen to all networks
3. Vcall : 12 sen/30secs to all networks
4. PAYU : Basic 64kbps (500MB quota)
5. Others: IDD-yes, Roaming-yes, 4G-yes

hotlink FAST rates/features
1. Calls : 12 sen/30 secs to all networks
2. Sms : 12 sen to all networks
3. Vcall : 12 sen/30secs to all networks
4. PAYU : None. No internet access without subscription
5. Others: IDD-yes, Roaming-yes, 4G-yes, hotlink365

Internet features:
#hotlink: No PAYU, basic 64kbps, 7 existing mobile internet passes
hotlink FAST: No PAYU, no internet without fast internet pass subscription

#hotlink: There are currently 7 mobile internet passes under #hotlink plan ( 1 daily, 2 weekly and 4 monthly)
hotlink FAST: There are currently 3 fast internet passess under hotlink FAST plan ( 1 weekly and 2 monthly)

#hotlink: Quota divided between all day and 1am-7am
hotlink FAST: Quota divided between 4G and non-4G

Comparison between hotlink FAST against #hotlink internet subscriptions:
1. Weekly RM10: FAST = 250MB+250MB | #hotlink = 450MB + 450MB
2. Monthly RM30: FAST = 1GB + 1GB | #hotlink = 1.5GB + 1.5GB
3. Monthly RM48: FAST = 2GB + 2GB | #hotlink = 3GB + 3GB

Account Validity:
#hotlink: validity depending on topup amount. No extended validity.
hotlink FAST: validity depending on topup amount. hotlink365 extended validity available.

Conclusion
Hotlink FAST maintains the calling rates but increased the sms rate by 5 sen. Internet subscription is currently limited to fast internet pass subscription (with quota add-on) only. Cost for Internet data have also increased per MB. The highlight of this plan is no internet access without a subscription and the return of hotlink365 extended validity.

I believe this is suitable for those who requires a basic line for making/receiving calls with extended validity. If you need internet access, the current internet pass quota is not recommended for non-4G users. Yes, many of us here have 4G capable devices but one must remember that we (4G device owners) do not represent the entire Malaysian population.

If you still requires 3G data connection (for whatever reason) then #hotlink is still the better option in terms of cost-per-MB. If you only want hotlink365 extended validity then the new hotlink FAST plan gives you just that.

Fortunately this time, existing #hotlink can migrate to FAST for only RM1 and if they ever need to revert back to #hotlink, it is now possible without bugging their customer service by doing it yourself (and be charged RM5 for reverting!).

Altel's Real Prepaid plan

Altel have quietly updated their prepaid plan with basic internet starting 12th April 2018. New mobile data plans are also available since then.

All new activations beginning 12th April 2018 are entitled to::
1. Preloaded 200MB data valid for 15 days
2. Preloaded RM3 credits and comes with 30 days validity
3. Basic internet at 64kbps (10GB FUP)

Features retained from previous plan are:
1. 10% bonus credit for RM30++ in a single topup
2. 365 days extended validity at RM28
3. Rates for all networks : 16 sen/minute calls, 5 sen/sms, 25 sen/mms

Previous Altel Real prepaid was as follows (for comparison):

I have 3 units purchased recently from jslim18@LYN. All 3 units works, tested in linux, android and WXP using vendor drivers (tplink/ralink). Performance testing indicates poor performance through thick brick/concrete walls over angled distance (between 1st floor and ground floor over 15m, experiencing handshake/packet drops). Performance is normal within same room, adjacent room and upto +/- 15m. Original seller does not give refund and no suitable exchange was available.

If you're looking for these tl-wn727n VER 3 and do not require distanced coverage then these may be suitable for you.
