Web Dev. Where to start?

I am looking to pick up on web design but am not really sure where to start.

1. I have looked at HTML but I cannot imagine anyone designing complex pages by typing HTML tags, so in practical scenarios what designers/IDEs are popular for web design?

2. Is there a preferred order to pick up web design? I currently have in mind:
HTML -> CSS ->Javascript -> (Some serverside scripting language Perl/PHP) -> (What's next?Flash?Applets?)

3. How do frameworks like RubyOnRails fit into this picture? Do they rely on working knowledge of (2) or is that abstracted away?

Any book suggestions would be nice as well!

Programming patterns? Advice?

How many of you guys try to adhere to specific patterns when developing programs in general? In WPF and Silverlight for example you have MVVM, or n-tier in enterprise apps etc. For those of you who have tried them I was wondering what your experiences are. Has it been helpful or made you more productive? How often are these things used in the actual software dev world?

I studied EE engineering btw, but have been learning vb.net, C#,WPF, Silverlight and MSSQL for the past few months. Also for web dev in general where do you guys suggest is a good starting point. My friend has been suggesting HTML/PHP or maybe python,rubyonrails,scala? Any book recommendations would be nice also!

Beats Solo Anyone?

I would like to get the DV6 laptop and I noticed that it comes with a Beats Solo. It's the retail Dr Dre version and comes with a warranty. I am not a fan of headphones so if anyone wants one PM me with a price. Can't promise anything at the moment. I am from Penang btw.
