Video doorbell

Hi all,

I'm looking into getting the reolink video doorbell. Initially i thought of just getting the poe version but the wiring would be much of an hassle. Decided to go with wifi (not ideal, but ). The specs on the doorbell says 12-24VAC 50/60Hz or DC 24V. Any idea how I can achieve the 12-24VAC 50/60Hz power supply from existing wiring? 24V DC is doable but i feel inside of the wall will be messy.

Anyone has installed the same doorbell?

Opinion on Job offer

Hi,

I recently completed my studies (Bachelor in Chemical Engineering). I attended an interview as a Junior/Cadet Mill Engineer in a palm oil mill. I was told about the opening through a family friend. Attended the interview yesterday morning. Got called back with an offer in the evening. I was informed the job would be a 6-months contract with 2.5k basic pay. The mill is located about 40 km away from my house. Travel takes about 50 minutes, give or take 5 minutes.

Here's my dilemma. The job seems like a good starting point to gain experience and save money [I'll be travelling from home. So, only expense would be petrol]. My dad feels like I could still try applying for other job and see. Another suggestion was to try and see if they can negotiate on the pay to around 2.8k if possible. Other suggestions tend to be centered around finding jobs in Singapore.

While i would like to go to Singapore for job, supposing i got a job, we won't be able to afford the initial fees [rent etc]. Another thing is I'm anxious that if I were to ask about salary negotiation, the offer might be pulled? Another thing i considered that any other job that offer same pay or around 3k basic [someplace else] would result in almost similar saving or lower [due to rent, travel, food].

Can I get an opinion on the job offer and if I should try negotiating the salary a little? Or should I accept as it is and see how it goes? Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

I have a Lenovo G470 that's no longer working. I'm not sure why though. When I plug in the power adapter and press the power, there's no response. I'm no sure if the power button or the power connector on the laptop. or possibly the motherboard. I've taken the laptop apart and assembled back a few times before.

What can I do to test what is it that's not working? Is there any place/shop I can go to ask them to help test it out?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Btw, as for my location, I'm in Nilai area.

Thank you.

Hi,

I would like to know if there's like gloves for car driving? Where can I get one? Not looking for a racing one, just one to cover my hands.

I had an allergic reaction a few months back and was using the car at that time. It eventually got better, but I do still get mild reaction when I drive for long period. So, I would like to purchase something to cover my hand when driving if one exists.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you.

Opinion on SFF/Compact System build

Hi,

I was looking through some builds only and I saw some small SFF build utilizing cases like Cooler Master Elite 110/130, Fractal Design Core 500, Node 304 etc.

Then, I saw some even more compact cases like the Dan Case A4 [super pricey] and even tinier ones like MiniBox M350, MITXPC MX500 and NFC S4 Mini. Similar tinier cases are available on taobao.

Interestingly, while looking at the tinier cases, I found out that they use PSU ranging from 80W to 160W, some even more. Some examples: PicoPSU and HDPlex.

Some videos here: PicoPSU, HDPlex 160.

Question:

1. Has anyone used something like this? Especially the power supply? What's your experience like?

2. Others, what do you think of these types of PSU?

As for why I'm looking into this, I'm planning a PFsense build with the G4560 and looking to get it into the smallest case possible [Elite 110/130] when I came across these. Casings can be had cheap from other location, then only thing that stumped me is the PSU. The PSUs I listed seems to be quite well used in the States.

Thanks.
Question about NAS Build

Hi,

I’m planning on building a NAS. Want to run Windows with Snapraid and Emby. I’ll be continously adding drives as needed, so, I’ll just assume an end result of about 100TB [most likely won’t reach that much].

I might go with my existing build [in signature] and convert it into a NAS or buy a newer system. If reusing my pre-existing system, I would just remove the GPU and add in HBA cards as well as replace the CPU.

If new system, thinking of going with i3-8100 but motherboards are expensive and cheaper ones won’t be out yet, so might wait for that.

Some question about the whole setup.

1.	How do I find case that can fit a large amount of HDD here? Something that can fit between 20 to 30 drives. I'm thinking of cases with multiple 5.25" bays, but those are getting rarer these days.
2.	It seems finding an HBA card in Malaysia is difficult, do I get them from overseas? Amazon?
3.	How can I power 20-30 drives simultaneously? [Still having problem figuring this out.] Can I use something like this to add more sata power connectors?
4.	Curious about the conditions for RMA-ing a hard drive. Does having bad sectors qualify for RMA?
5.	I’ve been trying to find motherboard with 3 x PCIE x16 [for the HBA cards, but most I find have 2 only. Are 3 x PCIE x16 slots motherboards no longer being produced?

Thanks.
Home Renovations Question

Hi all,

We are planning on doing some renovation before moving into the house. I have some questions/doubts; hope someone can help me. I apologize in advance as it is very long.

Some info: House is a one-and-half storey Semi Detached. There is termite problem in the housing area. Not so bad based on the damage in the house and with what checked among neighbor; there is a termite problem but it is a small one.

1. Door Frame. The termites have damaged a small portion of the door frame. Previous owner haven’t changed the door frame before [they lived in for 14 years], so, this is the only damage done [probably 10-15% of the frame damaged; only on two door frames out of four in the ground floor affected; one door (not frame) on top floor]. What other alternative can I use besides wood? If using wood, is there a specific wood type we should go for?

2. Parquet Flooring. The first floor flooring and staircase has parquet flooring. I’ve read some online that mention parquet flooring can be damaged by termites, some mentioned termites don’t eat them. Any idea which is true? Plus the parquet flooring is popping off [2-3 pieces only so far]. Would it be better to replace the parquet flooring with tiles or just reuse [repair/glue down what’s needed]? Only concern is if termites may damage them.

3. Wood Flooring. My sister is interested in some wood flooring. My mother liked it too. However, due to the termite problem, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Would laminate or vinyl be a good alternative? I’ve read something about wood look tiles, but not sure if it’s available in Malaysia? Can anyone advise me on this?

4. Hiding Wires. My dad wants to conceal the wiring [This is regarding wiring like LAN cables, HDMI, cable wires etc. ] in the house but my mom says it’ll be a hassle later on. Does anyone know if something like this is available in Malaysia? Or is there any other alternative for it?

Image 1
Image 2
Image 3

5. Lights. We will need to add some extra lights to the rooms in the house. How do you calculate/determine the positions of the lights and how many lights you need as well as the proper wattage necessary? Is there any site that helps with that? Mostly concerned about the number of lights required in an particular room.

6. Contracts. For written agreement/contracts, how does one asks for it or tells about it? Is there a proper way of doing it? Sequential payments etc? The contractor is recommended by my dad's friend. It's not that I don't trust the contractor, but it's better to be prepared just in case something happens.

Some non related questions?:

1.	Does anyone know what type of trees these are (Tree_1, Tree_2)? Anyone from Ipoh here? These trees are found along the road [on both sides] to Ipoh Parade.

2.	Are items from IKEA prone to termite attacks? If they are, is there a way to prevent termites from attacking them?

3.	Plants in the house. How do you prevent soil from flying away and how does one minimize insect/pest? Most likely plan on having plants like snake’s tongue plant around the house. Does anyone have plant in their house?

Thank you.
