KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Reuters) - Malaysia will not issue a sports betting licence to a firm set to be controlled by gaming group Berjaya Corp amid growing public anger in the mostly Muslim nation, local media reported on Saturday.
The Star newspaper cited Prime Minister Najib Razak as saying that the government initially agreed to award the licence to Ascot Sports Sdn Bhd to control the illegal betting industry that had grown to 10 billion ringgit ($3.08 billion) yearly.

But the government delayed issuing the licence to Ascot as it wanted to get public feedback after the proposal sparked protests across the country by Muslims who are forbidden to gamble under Islamic laws.
"It (the decision) is about the political impact and from the (Islam) religion point of view," the Star cited Najib as saying after chairing a meeting with senior officials of his United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) on Friday.
The government's move to consider issuing a betting licence in early May was met with protests after Muslim Friday prayers. The opposition Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) said it would organise a 100,000-strong protest next week.

The New Straits Times cited Najib as saying that the government had the legal right to withdraw the licence and would not compensate Ascot Sports, which was acquired last month by Berjaya Corp from its major shareholder -- tycoon Vincent Tan.
Tan also controls Berjaya Corp as well as Berjaya Sports Toto , one of three number forecast operators in the country where Islamic moral police squads routinely patrol gambling outlets to arrest Malay Muslims.
Berjaya was not immediately available for comment.
Shares in both Berjaya and Berjaya Sports Toto tumbled 3.4 percent on Friday before the announcement.

China’s ride-sharing market witnessed a boom around 2015 and by 2024, China had 7.5 million licensed ride-sharing drivers.

Meanwhile, the market has become increasingly saturated.

The transportation bureau of Shenzhen in southern China’s Guangdong province, for example, warned in April of the ride-sharing market’s saturation.

According to the bureau, the average daily number of ride-hailing orders completed per vehicle was about 13 in April.

Meanwhile, the price per kilometre offered by ride-sharing platforms also kept decreasing. In some cities outside the rush hour, the price per kilometre can be less than one yuan (US$0.15).

Shenzhen ride-sharing drivers reportedly earned about 300 yuan (US$45) working 12 hours a day, after deducting the costs like car rental fees, charging fees and insurance.

According to a 2025 report by the Research Centre for New Employment Forms in China, the average age of ride-hailing drivers in 13 Chinese provinces is about 40, and 60 per cent of them are the only breadwinner of their family.

Under the increasing pressure, some racked their brains to boost the customer experience.

A driver in Harbin, northeastern China’s Heilongjiang province, sold the fuse beads pixel art his daughter made. In one order, the platform charged 10 yuan (US$1.5) for the trip, but sold the pixel art for 93 yuan (US$14).

Another driver in southwestern China’s Sichuan province sold handmade accessories made by his jobless wife. He treated his car as a “mobile stall” and said the sales were even higher than running a real stall.

A driver in Shanghai hung jade products everywhere in his car, making it look so resplendent that a passenger thought they had got into the wrong car.

The driver explained that he was originally a jewellery shop owner and ride-sharing was his part-time job.

Some escalated the in-car experience.

One ride-sharing driver put a karaoke machine and a disco ball in the back seat. Passengers could simply sing songs by scanning the QR code.

The karaoke machine also had a rating system. If the passenger got 95 or above, he would give them a drink as a prize.

One passenger reportedly planned to ride 3km, and changed their destination to a place further away after discovering the karaoke and even picked up two friends on the way.

Another opened a cafe in his car, offering americano and latte made “on site”, priced between 22 and 29 yuan.

Some drivers also installed massage mats on the seats, offering an initial two-minute free massage, to induce the passengers to pay for longer service.

The downside is that the passenger cannot choose to not enjoy the free massage. One person who had been diagnosed rib bone fracture hailed one such car, and said he went through a “torture” by the massage mat.

In another case, a taxi driver in eastern China’s Jiangsu province, offered a cheap haircut service priced at only 8 yuan (US$1.2). He would do haircuts while waiting for passengers.

These extra services have been seen as a part of the neijuan game that trapped ride-sharing drivers.

Just one week before shutting down our Facebook page, certain parties circulated fake news about Coverage Media. Among the false claims:

They alleged that this portal belongs to MCA.
They attempted to carry out character assassination against Shen Yee Aun, claiming he is linked to MCA.
Just because of a few articles critical towards PKR and DAP, they falsely alleged that Coverage Media is trying to ask people to support BN or PN.
For the record:

Coverage Media has no connection whatsoever with MCA.
Shen Yee Aun was never a member of MCA.
He only served under Tan Sri Chua Soi Lek during his tenure as MCA President from 2012 to 2014.
Since Tan Sri Chua Soi Lek’s retirement, both have not been actively involved in politics for the past 12 years.
They even tried to drag in Tan Sri Vincent Lee, who has absolutely nothing to do with Coverage Media.
Shen Yee Aun and Tan Sri Vincent Lee have not been in contact since 2018.
The company associated with them has been dormant since 2020 and has conducted no sales, monetization, or any commercial activities since 2018.
Coverage Media was only founded in 2016 — two years after both Shen Yee Aun and Tan Sri Chua Soi Lek had already stopped serving in MCA.
Linking Coverage Media to MCA is a complete insult to our independent voice and hard work.
Under its current leadership, MCA is clearly incapable of owning or managing any media platform that can generate such strong public buzz, influence, and monthly hits of 16–20 million page views. This old dinosaur political party is already past its time and heading toward extinction.
If you scroll through the entire The Coverage Media Facebook postings, you’ll notice far more criticism directed at BN and especially PN than at DAP or PKR.
Yet, ironically, it’s DAP and PKR who seem unable to tolerate any criticism toward themselves. That intolerance is exactly why media ranking has dropped so badly under their administration.

Her old article attacking both Shen Yee Aun and Coverage Media is nothing more than another hit piece aimed at covering up their own flaws and shortcomings.
This is the same DAP leader who previously opposed political appointments in GLCs, but is now happily accepting the position of TalentCorp Chairman.
According to DAP’s Rayer, the salary for such a political appointment ranges between RM 90,000 and RM 120,000 per month, excluding her MP salary and allowances.
We suspect this block was triggered because certain DAP leaders are highly sensitive to criticism. Our last few articles before the block discussed issues involving Marina Ibrahim and questionable political appointments in GLCs. We also highlighted unfair policy changes under the Madani administration, including:

Last year, NVIDIA announced the RTX 5090 D alongside the standard RTX 5090. The RTX 5090 D was made exclusively for China, but soon after its launch, the graphics card was banned from sale in China following updated US regulations. Soon after the ban, NVIDIA launched a second variant with even more cut-down specifications than the RTX 5090 D, called the RTX 5090 D v2.

The biggest difference was the reduced 24 GB VRAM versus the 32 GB on the original card, & a narrower memory bus. This meant that those who wanted to repurpose the card for AI using its 32 GB frame buffer were out of luck. Reports currently suggest that a lot of AI firms are retrofitting custom RTX 5090 D v2 with double the VRAM, up to 48 GB.

But the more concerning news regarding the NVIDIA RTX 5090 D v2 comes from HKEPC, who report that market sources have suggested that China is moving to ban the gaming flagship entirely. It is said that Chinese motherboard manufacturers recently received a notification from customs authorities that the RTX 5090 D v2 will not be approved for processing, and retailers who are importing it will not get a clearance or sales permit.

Market rumors suggest that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 D v2 has been banned from the Chinese market, but this time it's not the US that's banning it, but China. According to Chinese motherboard manufacturers, they recently received a notification from Chinese customs that the GeForce RTX 5090 D v2 graphics cards will not be approved for processing and therefore cannot enter China. This sudden ban caught NVIDIA off guard.

It was initially thought that the recently concluded US-China talks, with Trump bringing Jensen Huang to the US, would ease tensions. The authorities determined Liu died as the result of a production safety liability accident. The park was closed thereafter.

The swing ride was on a platform near a waterfall which has a drop of 168 metres.

Liu was thought to have been 16 to 17 years old. A viral video clip showed her wearing a safety helmet with her torso secured by several safety ropes.

As Liu was perched on the edge of the platform, she was heard yelling “not tied tightly” multiple times. However, a worker still pushed her out.

About two seconds later, a safety button above her head was released and the girl plunged down the cliff.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Maliuyan Expedition Park said on social media that it was closed from May 4 to 10 due to “force majeure”. The park said it was carrying out safety examinations on its equipment to guarantee the safety of tourists.

According to Dahe News, the swing ride was launched in March. One internet user said he felt weightlessness for several seconds while on it.

Dzulkefly explained that “healthy ageing” is defined by five strict criteria which includes, strong social support, absence of cognitive impairment such as dementia, no depression or presence of only low depressive symptoms, independence in activities of daily living and absence of chronic diseases or having well-controlled conditions.

Based on NHMS 2025 data involving 7,258 respondents, only a small fraction (14.7%) of older persons met all five benchmarks.

A major policy focus highlighted by Dzulkefly is the Senior Citizens Bill, which he argued must be expedited to establish a robust legal framework protecting the rights and welfare of older persons.

“We should not wait until people reach their 60s. We must begin preparation from their early 50s to allow at least a decade for healthy ageing interventions,” he cautioned, warning that late intervention would result in the crisis-driven management of age-related conditions.

Dzulkefly highlighted Malaysia’s accelerating demographic shift, stating that the country is expected to become an “ageing nation” by 2036, when 15% of the population will be aged 60 and above.

He said that this transition is occurring over just 15 to 16 years, approximately 1.5 times faster than in Japan, which took nearly a century to reach a similar demographic stage.

Dzulkefly also warned that this rapid shift will place significant pressure on healthcare systems, fiscal planning and social support structures.

Despite the challenges, the report identified some encouraging trends.

Depression among older persons has declined from 11.2% in 2018 to 8% in 2025, indicating improvements in mental health outcomes.

However, concerns remain regarding dementia and chronic diseases, which are closely linked to uncontrolled conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

The study also found that the proportion of older persons living alone has increased to approximately 18%.

Several prominent business leaders have been forced to resign their positions in recent months after new details emerged about their ties to Epstein - a fact that Melania Trump referenced in her remarks.

Sky and Amanda Roberts - the family of Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre - and other survivors told BBC Newsnight that they "have already shown extraordinary courage by coming forward, filing reports, and giving testimony.

"Asking more of them now is a deflection of responsibility, not justice," they said in a statement. They accused the first lady of protecting "those with power", including members of her husband's administration who they said still have not released all of the investigative files related to Epstein.

"Survivors have done their part," they said. "Now it's time for those in power to do theirs."

The relationship between the first lady and Epstein has already led to legal battles.

In October 2025, for example, HarperCollins UK said it would retract passages from a book that included "unverified" claims that Donald Trump and his wife met through Epstein. Similarly, the Daily Beast retracted and apologised for an article the publication later said "did not meet our standards."

The first lady also has been embroiled in an ongoing legal dispute with author Michael Wolff over a claim in his book Fire and Fury that she was first introduced to her husband through a modelling agent tied to Epstein.

Wolff moved to counter-sue her after she threatened him with a $1bn (£745mn) defamation lawsuit.

"My attorneys and I have fought these unfounded and baseless lies with success, and will continue to maintain my sound reputation without hesitation," she said on Thursday.

The first lady's statement is likely to reignite intense public debate over the handling of the justice department's investigation into Epstein and the subsequent release of its files.
