(WTA) How does impedance adapter work?

Hi, fellow audiophile. I'm wondering how impedance adapter work when connected to headphone/IEM to amp? Does the impedance adapter attached at the headphone/IEM increase the output impedance of the amp or just increase the load seen by the amp? How about the calculation involve as well? I'm quite confused actually what the impedance adapter function to the headphone/IEM and amp. Sorry for the long post.
