Sibu boss only slapped with RM2K

SIBU: A 47-year-old employer was today sentenced to a fine of RM2,000, in default, one month’s imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court here for assaulting his employee.

Police investigation revealed that the accused was found to have intentionally caused injury to Lazarus by slapping his face and stomping on his head and body.

As a result of the incident, Lazarus was reported to have suffered “cerebral concussion, left parietal scalp hematoma, left per orbital hematoma and left maxilla hematoma” based on medical report.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern passed down the sentence on Lau Hui Kwong of Kampung Nangka after he pleaded guilty to the charge read and explained through an interpreter.

He understood and the consequences of maintaining his plea of guilt.

The charge referred to him stated that he had voluntarily caused hurt to Lazarus Boon Kumbong, 23, at the roadside of Jalan Rantau Panjang on October 14 at about 7:00 pm.

As such, he had committed an offence punishable under Section 323 of the Penal Code which provides for up to one year’s imprisonment or RM2,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

According to facts of the case, the complainant reported that on October 14 at about 6:54 pm, he was contacted by his younger brother, Lazarus, who was having an argument with his employer.

The argument was believed to have risen from an incident involving the accused’s company-owned crane driven by Lazarus, which had collided with a house close to the worksite.

The complainant immediately went to the location, where a verbal dispute escalated, leading the accused to punch Lazarus.

The complainant retaliated by punching the accused, resulting in a physical fight between them.

It was further stated by the complainant that the accused then retrieved an object from the vehicle, believed to be a firearm, and pointed it towards them, causing him to flee the scene to seek help while leaving his younger brother behind.

The accused then allegedly assaulted Lazarus by stomping on him, rendering him unconscious.

The complainant later returned to the scene and Lazarus was rushed to Sibu Hospital by an ambulance.

There, he received treatment in the Red Zone of the Emergency Department before been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On October 16 at about 3:00 am, at the roadside of Jalan Kampung Nyabor, a team of police led by Inspector Sudiman Sakuot, arrested the accused for his involvement in the case.

Based on the evidence and the police investigation, the accused has committed an offence punishable under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Keshava Rao Tharma Raja while the accused who has no legal representation, opted to pay the fine.

BINTULU (Nov 8): Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of a man on the fourth-floor car park of a hotel here around 11pm last night.

The victim was found covered in blood and medical personnel later declared him dead at the scene.

Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said following the incident, the police investigated and found the suspects involved.

He said acting on information, the police managed to arrest two male suspects, one a local citizen and the other a foreigner, both aged in their 40s, in the Miri area at 3am today.

The police also seized a vehicle believed to be involved in the case.

He said a remand application for the suspects will be filed in the Magistrates’ Court here to facilitate the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

“The police will not compromise with any individual or group that commits criminal acts,” Nixon said in a statement.

“The police are committed to tracking down the suspects involved in this case and the public are requested not to make any speculation regarding the incident which is still under investigation.”

Kodak shares have surged 1,481 per cent this week in heavy trading as the Trump administration offered the former photography industry leader a financial lifeline to make ingredients in drugs used to fight coronavirus.

The company’s valuation jumped from $92m to $1.5bn as it shares rose from $2.10 at Friday’s close to $33.20 on Wednesday.
The stock was halted more than a dozen times within the first two hours of trading on Wednesday, a day after it more than tripled in value.

The pace of trading far surpassed anything seen since the company returned to the New York Stock Exchange after its emergence from bankruptcy in 2013.

Kodak, which is based in Rochester, New York, and the US International Development Finance Corporation, announced on Tuesday that the company had secured a
$765m loan to produce drug ingredients under the Defense Production Act.

Kodak shares began climbing on Monday. On that day, a Rochester television station published — and then deleted — a report saying an announcement was forthcoming from the company on Tuesday,
news anchor Adam Chodak of CBS-affiliate WROC told the Financial Times.

The WROC report did not include details on what the two organisations would reveal, beyond a manufacturing agreement related to Covid-19.

By day’s end, Kodak shares had gained 25 per cent as some 1.65m shares changed hands, more than 14 times the daily average
over the preceding 10 trading days, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Jim Continenza, the executive chairman of Kodak, told CNBC on Wednesday that he “couldn’t tell you what influenced that [volume]” on Monday,
but that the team at Kodak “knew for over a week” about the looming announcement.

“I mean obviously this has been a pretty tight kept secret obviously, even until the last day,” he said.

The Securities and Exchange Commission declined to say if it was investigating the surge in trading activity ahead of the announcement.
Kodak and Nexstar, the owner of WROC in Rochester, did not respond to requests for comment.

Kodak trading volumes continued to rise on Tuesday and Wednesday, with more than $10.9bn worth of the stock — some 558m shares — changing hands.

KUCHING: Seorang lelaki mabuk ditangkap kerana mengasari pihak polis ketika ditahan dalam sekatan jalan raya.

Lelaki berusia 24 tahun itu ditahan dalam Sekatan Jalan Raya (SJR) pihak polis dan Angkatan Tentera Malaysia(ATM) sempena Op Bersepadu Covid-19 dalam tempoh PKPB di Jalan Lapangan Terbang Kuching jam 3.15 pagi tadi.

Ketua Polis Daerah Kuching, Asisten Komosioner Awang Din Awang Gani berkata,semasa pemeriksaan dijalankan, mendapati seorang lelaki di dalam kereta tersebut dalam keadaan mabuk tidak mahu memberi kerjasama dan mengeluar perkataan “lancau” dan marah-marah kepada petugas semasa pemeriksaan dijalankan.

"Suspek juga gagal memberi alasan yang munasabah kerana merentasi sempadan dari daerah Padawan ke daerah Kuching ke alamat tempat tinggal suspek dalam tempoh berkuatkuasa Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan Bersyarat (PKPB).

"Suspek telah ditahan reman untuk siasatan lanjut di bawah Seksyen 186 Kanun Keseksaan / Seksyen 509 Kanun Keseksaan dan Peraturan 5 PPDPB (Langkah-langkah di dalam Kawasan Tempatan Jangkitan)(No.6) 2020," katanya dalam satu kenyataan hari ini.

Beliau turut mengingatkan orang ramai supaya patuh kepada peraturan semasa tempoh PKPB.

"Orang ramai juga diingatkan supaya tidak memandu semasa mabuk kerana tabiat ini bukan sahaja membahayakan diri sendiri bahkan kepada pengguna jalan raya yang lain.

"Malah, banyak kejadian yang melibatkan kematian angkara pemandu mabuk," tegasnya

KANOWIT: Seorang juru kimpal diberkas polis selepas merogol gadis bawah umur di taman permainan berdekatan Kubu Ema, di sini awal pagi semalam.

Suspek berusia 41 tahun berjaya ditangkap di sebuah rumah tidak bernombor di Jalan Delta jam 1.30 pagi tadi.

Ketua Polis Daerah Kanowit, DSP Tega Bilong berkata, mangsa berusia 14 tahun mengaku telah melakukan hubungan seks di taman permainan tersebut awal pagi selepas disoal ibunya.

"Suspek ditangkap satu jam selepas laporan polis dibuat ibu mangsa tengah malam tadi," katanya dalam satu kenyataan hari ini.

Katanya, siasatan awal mendapati mangsa yang merupakan pelajar tingkatan dua telah dibawa oleh suspek ke sebuah taman permainan berkenaan sekitar jam 5 pagi Rabu.

"Mangsa tidak melawan apabila suspek mengajaknya melakukan hubungan seks,"ujarnya.

Beliau berkata, suspek kemudian terus beredar dan membuat persembahan tarian singa, sementara mangsa berjalan kaki ke sebuah kedai kopi untuk bekerja sambilan semasa cuti sekolah.

Mangsa adalah anak kedua daripada tiga orang adik beradik dan difahamkan dia telah menjalinkan hubungan dengan suspek sejak awal bulan ini.

Suspek merupakan seorang juru kimpal beranak tiga dan sudah bercerai sejak 13 tahun lalu.

16 & 17 year old drug pushers paid RM30 per day

KUCHING: Two teenagers have been arrested for drug related offences in Batu Kawa yesterday (Jan 15),
with one 16-year-old boy admitting to being a ‘runner’ for drug peddlers for RM30 a day.

The 16 and 17-year-old were arrested along with another 31-year-old and a drug pusher nicknamed ‘Ah Joey’ in a series of raids led by police narcotics teams.

The 17-year-old teenage girl also claimed to be the girlfriend of a drug pusher known as ‘Ah Bi’.

Padawan District police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan, who confirmed the arrests, said efforts are ongoing to locate the whereabouts of ‘Ah Bi’,
who could not be contacted via a telephone number that was provided by the suspects.

“The arrests started with the 16-year-old male teenager at a house in Desa Wira at around 1.45pm. During the raid, police found drugs believed to be syabu (5.2grammes)
packed inside seven plastic packets in his possession,” said Aidil in a statement today.

During questioning, the suspect admitted that he started abusing drugs since 2017 and began selling the drugs for ‘Ah Joey’ for a salary of RM30 a day.

The suspect, who will be investigated under Section 39A(1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, also admitted to be getting his drug fix from ‘Ah Joey’ for free.

Police were then led to a house in Desa Wira at 2pm where the 31-year-old, ‘Ah Joey’ and the 17-year-old female suspect were found inside one of the bedrooms.

During the checks, police found a packet of drugs believed to be syabu (0.27 grammes) on the floor inside the room.

“Ah Joey also told police that he started abusing drugs since 2013 and would purchase the drugs via online banking transactions to Ah Bi.
After the transaction was completed, Ah Bi would make the drop-off at a specified area in BDC, Stampin,” said Aidil.

The 17-year-old female admitted to be abusing drugs since 2019 and claimed to be the girlfriend of ‘Ah Bi’, who also provided her with free drugs.

Both suspects will be investigated under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

During an initial drug test, all three suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine and are currently held at the Siburan and Beratok police stations.

Jail 10 years for insulting Islam

KUCHING: The High Court here will decide on Friday whether to review the conviction and punishment for Alister Cogia, 22 who was sentenced to 10 years in jail and RM50,000 fine for insulting Islam on Facebook.

Judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli made the decision because the court needed time to decide whether the sentence against Alister should be changed or retained.

Meanwhile, Alister’s lawyer Francis Teron Kadap hoped that the court would consider the decision.

“The court may reduce, maintain, and even set aside the sentence already imposed on Alister.

“The case can also be transferred to the lower court for proper consideration,” he said when met by reporters at the High Court here today.

He said as the accused’s counsel, they were not concerned about any decisions made by the court later.

“The important thing for us is that the court will have to consider and amend the existing sentence because the 10-year jail term and RM50,000 fine are quite heavy in this case,” he added.

Alister was originally sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined RM50,000 after pleading guilty to 10 charges of insulting the Prophet Muhammad through his Facebook account, ‘Ayea Yea’ last March.

He was convicted of five charges under Section 298A (1) (a) of the Penal Code and another five charges under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Following the sentencing by the court, many parties had expressed dissatisfaction that the punishment imposed was excessive.

A review of the decision was filed by Parti Keadilan Sarawak legal team, as they were concerned that Alister might be having mental health issues.

Following to this, the High Court ordered Alister be sent to Sentosa Kuching Hospital for a three-month mental examination.

However, the court on June 17 found that Alister’s mental health status was normal, especially when his mental state was stable during the ward for three months.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Musli Abdul Hamid.

2 Chinese Sarawakian caught in Indo for drugs

KUCHING: Two Sarawakian men have been arrested in Pontianak last Friday for allegedly smuggling syabu, the street name for the drug methamphetamine,
into the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, a news report said.

According to online news portal Tribun Pontianak, the men, aged 25 and 31, were from Kampung Segedup in Batu Kawah and Taman Malihah in Matang, respectively.

Police found seven kg of the drugs hidden in seven Chinese tea packs when the men were arrested in a hotel.

The website explained that the police were tipped off earlier this month about an attempt to smuggle in drugs by air from Sarawak.

The Sarawakian men were said to have flown from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur on Aug 18, and while in Kuala Lumpur,
one of them received the drugs before they both flew to Pontianak on Friday.

“In Pontianak, both foreign men headed for the hotel to wait for the recipient of the drugs but before the drugs were picked up, both men were arrested,”
the news report said, adding that a man who was to receive the drugs was also busted.

The arrest came to light after a video of the men being paraded before the press was shared on social media last night.

In the video, the men, who were wearing prison overalls and handcuffs, appeared to confess to the crime when
questioned by a police officer, all while being interviewed by the local press there.

80 police officers in Sarawak positive for drug

KUCHING: More than 80 police officers in Sarawak are on a target list for drug abuse.

Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Dev Kumar told a press conference yesterday that some of them could also possibly be in cahoots with drug pushers.

“So far, two officers with the rank of lance corporal and another with the rank of corporal tested positive for methamphetamine,” he said, adding the three are currently under remand.

He revealed that one lance corporal was arrested in Kota Samarahan on Tuesday, while the other was nabbed here on Wednesday. The corporal was detained here yesterday after he tested positive for drugs.

Dev Kumar said a pathology lab report is needed to charge both suspects in court, which would be followed by dismissal from the force.

“We can only take action if the lab result showed that they tested positive for drugs as the first drug test was conducted by us (police),” he said.

He stressed the police need to ‘clean-up’ their own house before the war against drugs in Sarawak can be carried out effectively.

“Now less talk, more action needs to be taken,” said Dev Kumar, adding the police launched ‘Ops Blue Devil’ on Tuesday to weed out bad hats in the force, including random drug tests on officers of different ranks.

Dev Kumar had earlier witnessed the handing over of duties from outgoing Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) head ACP Sahar Abdul Latif to Supt Hasnir Abdul Hamid.

He said a meeting will be held today at the NCID office to further enhance strategies on how to combat drug-related issues in Sarawak.

“We (police) need to cut the source of the drug problem by focusing on the pusher or the syndicates and not only the drug users,” he added.

He said there is an increasing number of drug-related cases in rural Sarawak.

Dev Kumar added the success of the recent ‘Ops Ice Breaker’, which saw the arrest of more than 500 suspects between July 29 and Aug 4 throughout Sarawak proved utilising personnel from other police departments could assist the NCID with manpower issues.

A Sarawak-wide joint operation last month also saw the arrest of 406 suspected drug pushers and abusers in one day.

Patient killed,crashed his car against Hosp. wall

KUCHING: A patient of Sentosa Hospital died of internal injuries when he crashed his car against the hospital’s concrete wall at 1.20pm yesterday.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel from the Batu Lintang fire station who rushed to the scene, said the deceased had been identified as a 76-year-old male.

The deceased had just received treatment at the hospital and was about to leave the premises when the fatal incident happened.

He was declared dead by medical personnel at the scene, and the remains have been handed over to the police for further action.

KUCHING: Betong parliamentary constituency has been allocated RM2.5 million for the growing of Musang King durian due to its great export potential, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

Speaking at the annual dinner of Saribas Social and Recreational Club Kuching here last Saturday, he said the amount was approved by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“About 1,000 seedlings have been distributed among the participating families in the first batch of distribution under the programme,” he said.

Uggah, who is also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development, also called on social clubs representing rural communities to include income-generating economic activities in their list of programmes.

He said such clubs could explore and participate in modern agricultural activities like fertigation and hydroponics farming, which did not require much space or manpower.

These methods could produce better yields and quality than conventional farming, which means better income and higher standard of living for the participants.

He said those interested could seek advice and guidance from his ministry.

He also said the chief minister himself would go all out to promote these activities, which were among his government strategies in the rural transformation plan.

“As a matter of fact, he recently announced a venture capital of RM200 million for the agriculture sector. He too has set aside another RM100 million for subsidies,” Uggah said.

Bookie fined RM2,000 and a month jail

MIRI: A bookie was fined RM2,000 or a month jail by a magistrate’s court here yesterday for his involvement in illegal football betting activities.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa passed the sentence after the accused, Fam Fook Siong, pleaded guilty to the charge spelt out under Section 6 (1) of the Betting Act, 1953.

The accused could be fined not more than RM5,000 or a jail term not exceeding six months or both, upon conviction.

According to the fact of case, Fam was found to have two carbon booklets and a mobile phone with football betting apps.

He committed the offence at a shop in Jalan South Yu Seng here at 9.15 pm on July 6.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
