Tommy: Coroner's ruling bizarre

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 — Tan Sri Tommy Thomas described the coroner court’s ruling of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim’s death, which stated it was due to a criminal act by two or three persons, as “bizarre.”

A report by local news portal The Vibes was quoting from the former attorney general’s recently-published book My Story: Justice in the Wilderness.

Thomas said he found coroner Rofiah Mohamad’s findings unusual as he was briefed by the police that foul play had been ruled out as Adib’s cause of death, following detailed

investigations by different police units.

“In late September 2019 the coroner released her findings. She decided that two or three persons had caused the death of Adib. It is mind-boggling that she arrived at this conclusion, when police, with their experience, expertise, manpower and resources, could not.

“The coroner was also specific; two or three persons. Why not one? Why not five or more?” he wrote.

The coroner court’s decision resulted in officers from the Attorney General’s Chambers requesting that Thomas file an appeal against the findings at the High Court.

Stating that although he believes Rofiah’s findings and reasoning to be wrong, Thomas added that he ultimately decided not to appeal as the coroner’s decision was for the police to resume their investigations.

“The inspector-general of police immediately responded that the file had never been closed, and that police will continue investigating. I had no objections to this course of action,” Thomas said.

In the book, he also expressed shock upon learning that private legal practitioner Syazlin Mansor also represented Adib’s family for the inquest into his death. Syazlin was also a representative for the Housing and Local Government Ministry as well as the Fire and Rescue Department.

As such he contacted its minister Zuraida Kamaruddin to request that she revoke Syazlin’s appointment as representative.

“To compound matters, the husband of the private practitioner (Syazlin) selected by Zuraida was employed as her press secretary. If such conflict of interest raised eyebrows, a worse conflict arose between the lawyer’s duty to Adib’s family and that to the Housing Ministry and Fire Department.

“The interests of these three parties did not coincide: On the contrary, they diverged,” Thomas argued, adding that Syazlin should have realised it would have been unacceptable to act for all three parties.

Looking at the matter more closely, he discovered that during the inquest, Syazlin often took positions in contradiction to those taken by deputy public prosecutors, which in turn caused embarrassment to the ministry and Fire Department which she also represented.

Although Thomas did not object if the private legal practitioner wanted to continue in representing Adib’s family, he said her decision to withdraw completely from the inquest towards the end was purely her choice.

“That decision was made by her, for reasons known to her. We were not responsible for that decision. I issued a statement on May 28, 2019, announcing the dropping of the private practitioner as a lawyer for the housing minister and Fire Department.

“That raised a storm of protest, and subsequently, the institution of contempt proceedings against me,” he wrote.

Thomas added that at the time of writing his book, the contempt proceedings brought by Adib’s family were pending at the Court of Appeal.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said in August last year that a proposal for a second inquest into Adib’s death was awaiting the approval of current Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Azizan Harun.

The 24-year old fireman sustained serious injuries during a riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on November 27, 2018. Although he regained consciousness several days later, he eventually died on December 17 that year at the National Heart Institute in KL.

Thomas’ 573-page book is now available for purchase via Gerakbudaya’s website.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...s-death/1945640

Not surprised...They obviously wanted to politicize his death..

Tommy Thomas on Zakir Naik

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not agreeable to the idea of Malaysia expelling fugitive Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik, as the then prime minister said no third country wanted to accept the Indian national, former attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas has reportedly said in his latest book.

Dr Zakir, a preacher said to have controversial views, was previously given permanent resident status by Malaysia. He is, however, wanted in his home country India to face criminal charges, including for alleged money-laundering and links to the alleged funding and alleged inciting of terrorist activities.

News portal The Vibes noted Thomas as saying however that the home minister and deputy prime minister in the previous Barisan Nasional government, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had allowed Dr Zakir to be a permanent resident in Malaysia against the advice of the police’s Special Branch.

During his time as the attorney general from June 2018 to February 2020, Thomas said India’s high commissioner had told him that India would be happy even if Malaysia chose to only expel Dr Zakir instead of extraditing him.

“Instead, India just wanted Malaysia to expel him from our shores. Where Zakir travelled thereafter was not Malaysia’s concern, and India would be happy that a thorn in bilateral ties had disappeared,” Thomas was quoted saying in his memoir released to the public yesterday.

In his memoir titled My Story: Justice in the Wilderness, Thomas said he had then communicated on this with the Inspector-General of Police and was told that the police did not object to this, The Vibes reported.

Thomas said he had then raised the recommendation of expelling Dr Zakir with Dr Mahathir who was then the prime minister.

“Over time, I brought up the subject of Zakir a couple of times with the prime minister. On each occasion, the response was the same. No third country wished to accept Zakir.

“My observation that that would mean Malaysia was hostage to Zakir and would have to provide him with a home did not move Tun,” Thomas was quoted saying in the book by The Vibes.

Thomas reportedly further discussed Dr Zakir’s matter with IGP Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, and was informed that there was no Muslim country — such as Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia — that wished to accept Dr Zakir.

Published by Strategic Information and Research Development Centre (SIRD), the 573-page book by Thomas is available for purchase from Gerakbudaya.

Dr Zakir has been evading Indian authorities since 2016, when files were opened against him for allegedly making hate speeches and laundering money after five militants launched an attack at a bakery in Dhaka, Bangladesh that ended with 29 dead.

One of the attackers was reported to have claimed that he had been inspired by the preacher’s speeches.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs in June 2019 said the Indian government had made a formal request to Malaysia for Dr Zakir’s extradition and would continue to pursue the matter with Malaysia, while a court in India had also in June 2019 ordered Dr Zakir to show up there.

Locally, Dr Zakir has been accused of denigrating other faiths and being a threat to Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multicultural harmony.

In July 2019, Dr Mahathir said that multiracial and multireligious Malaysia cannot have Dr Zakir as the country does not want anyone who gives extreme views about race and religion, but noted it was difficult to send him anywhere else as “many countries” do not want the preacher.

In August 2019 during Dr Mahathir’s administration, the authorities in Malaysia banned Dr Zakir from delivering public talks in all states in the interest of national security and to preserve racial harmony.

Prior to the ban, Dr Mahathir had in August 2019 said that Dr Zakir had overstepped the line when he told ethnic Chinese Malaysians to “go back” and questioned the loyalty of Malaysian-Indians in two separate instances, also saying that the latter had transgressed his privilege as a foreigner with permanent resident status by issuing political statements.

Dr Zakir was spotted in December 2019 attending the four-day Kuala Lumpur Summit 2019 which was launched by Dr Mahathir, but did not speak to the media then.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...ik-dr-m/1945615

"No muslim country wanted him"

"Against the advice of the police’s Special Branch"

She was 22.

Noritta's naked body was found by her housemates earlier that morning at their rented condominium in Puncak Prima Galleria, Desa Sri Hartamas, when they returned home from a night out.

Her body was found on her bed, with her limbs tied behind her back with wires and an undergarment. A pillow case and a bolster case were used to tie her up, covering her face and mouth.

It was reported that her housemates tried to resuscitate her and then called the police.

There were no signs of a break-in and no valuables were missing.

In their testimony, Noritta's housemates said they had earlier encountered a tall and dark stranger with a strong body odour dashing out of their apartment on the day of the tragedy. One of her housemates tried to stop him, but he ignored them and walked away quickly.

According to the post-mortem report, Noritta was either raped or had engaged in sexual intercourse and died from suffocation. Police found several DNA samples that belonged to Noritta and two male suspects.

As part of the investigation, several individuals were called for questioning, including Norrita's boyfriend, her housemates, a Finnish national and the security guards at the condominium.

A 36-year-old engineer named Hanif Basree Abdul Rahman, who was then attached to the Shah Alam City Council, was later named as the main suspect.

It was reported that Hanif's DNA was discovered in Noritta's room.

It was believed that Hanif was the last individual seen with Noritta on the night she was killed.

Hanif was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and put on trial. If found guilty, he could have been sentenced to death.

During the court hearing, a security guard of the condominium testified that Hanif was a regular visitor to the condominium and that Hanif was always seen with the victim late at night.

On July 1, 2004, the High Court acquitted Hanif without calling for his defence after a lengthy trial.

The then High Court judge Datuk Abdull Hamid Embong said there was insufficient evidence to warrant calling for his defence and that there were numerous holes in the prosecution's case.

In his judgment, he pointed out the two "mysterious men" linked to the murder, including the man with the body odour.

He said evidence showed that "Unknown Male 1" was the last person to be with the deceased as it was his hair and not Hanif's that was found on her bed.

The appellate court in Putrajaya heard the prosecution's appeal against the acquittal on Jan 26, 2005.

On Jan 29, 2005, Hanif walked out a free man again when the Court of Appeal upheld the acquittal as it was unanimously agreed that the prosecution had not made out a prima facie
case.

Noritta's murder remains unsolved and it is believed the murderer is still at large.

A year later, the then deputy inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said police wanted to continue investigations into unsolved high-profile murder cases such as Noritta's for another 20 years in order to find the real killers.

He said although the cases had raised doubts because the real murderers were not known, it did not mean the police had stopped investigations.

It was reported that a committee to evaluate unsolved cases had been set up to find new leads and nab criminals who were still at large. The police also urged cooperation from the victims' families and the public to provide fresh information.

Shortly after Hanif's acquittal, Noritta's mother said the family would continue to pray that her daughter's murderer would be caught one day.

"Only God and that person know the truth," she was reported as saying from the family home in Pokok Sena, Kedah.

Her mother said Noritta's favourite food was ketam masak lemak (crab cooked in coconut milk) and she would be remembered for her gentle and caring nature.

Woah...almost 20 years..i remember this case back then because firstly the victim was good looking..second her private life was highlighted in public..imagine i was a secondary school kid reading news like 'she had sex twice a week' etc... cant imagine what the parents felt...
Its time to use some DNA tech to solve this murder..

Klang macha masuk Stanford...

https://www.malaymail.com/news/life/2020/07...tanford/1886154

Klang boy gets into 10 top universities, chooses to attend prestigious Stanford University
Monday, 20 Jul 2020 12:50 PM MYT

BY MARK RYAN RAJ

PETALING JAYA, July 20 — By the time he was four, Yugendran Rajaendran had already mastered percentages in mathematics.

That's mainly thanks to the time he spent watching and learning from his four older sisters while they did their homework.

His aptitude for learning since a young age moulded Yugendran into somewhat of a “star student.” as his eagerness to learn helped him do well in his schooling years, most notably achieving 11 A+ in his SPM.

The 20-year-old has always dreamed big and has sought to earn himself a spot at one of the top global universities in the world, despite his family's humble background.

Now, fresh from graduating from his A-level programme at Epsom College in Malaysia (ECM), Yugendran is finally getting to live his childhood dream after being accepted into the prestigious California-based Stanford University’s Class of 2024

“It’s pretty exciting. Since I was a kid, I’ve always wondered what is so special about these top global universities,” said Yugendran in an interview with Malay Mail.

“Later on I realised that it was about the chance to be around such brilliant people, the facilities and the community in these universities. They can push me to greater heights.”

He applied to 15 different top global universities and got accepted into 10 of those universities, which included the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), New York University (NYU), Columbia University, Yale University, Carnegie Melon University and King’s College London.

Yugendran is planning to pursue a double degree in Bioengineering and Mathematical and Computational Science.

He said that he chose to join Stanford instead of all the other prestigious institutions because of the university’s state of the art bioengineering facilities which could aid him in his efforts to become a medical scientist.

“During my A-levels, I got interested in bioengineering because it is related to cancer and stem cell research. It is really fascinating to me,” said Yugendran.

“Cancer is one of those diseases that we haven’t found a cure for yet and stem cell research shows promising results. I researched more about it and realised that this was one of the ways that I could contribute to the scientific community.”

He added that he also picked to major in Mathematical and Computational Science (Data Science) as he hopes to one day work with the Malaysian health ministry in local healthcare policymaking.

Yugendran, who hails from Klang, didn’t get accepted into Stanford by luck though, as his unique learning habit shaped him into the bright young student he now is.

“My study philosophy is to always study for the purpose of learning. I never really focused on studying only for exams,” he said.

“I’ve always liked math. My father used to buy me math exercise books and I’d finish it in a day. That’s when I knew that I have an aptitude for learning. I find it intellectually stimulating.

“I make sure that I understand what I’m learning and I cover everything in the syllabus or textbooks. I learn everything so I feel satisfied. So the goal of learning to perfection helped me to achieve really good grades in exams.”

Although his life isn't completely revolved around all things to do with studying, as movie-buff Yugendran also enjoys watching sci-fi films like The Matrix and binge-watching the occasional TV series.

But Yugendran hopes to keep to his studying routine and continue to excel on his academic journey, as he said that it is the least he could do to make his parents proud.

“I’m very thankful because my parents have instilled in me an incredible work ethic. They have worked really hard to provide for our family, they made sure that my siblings and I were able to chase our dreams and go after what we want to do in life,” he said.

“But I also want to help other people too. What’s the point of doing so well for myself if I cannot contribute to the life of others? That’s why I want to do medicine so that I can help people live a better quality of life.”

Yugendran’s father has worked as a motorcycle mechanic in Kapar for more than three decades (he only goes on leave two days annually), while his mother is a housewife.

He added that his sisters -- three of which have pursued careers in medicine as well — and many of his teachers and lecturers also played pivotal roles in his self-development.

Yugendran expects to fly off and join the world-renowned Stanford community in late August or early September this year, with his semester beginning around mid-September.

He joined ECM to pursue his A-levels after obtaining a Tune Libra scholarship from the ECM Libra Foundation, thanks to his stellar academic records.

Thanks to his success in being accepted in Stanford — which is ranked second in the QS World University rankings — the ECM Libra Foundation recently launched an RM15 million Asean Scholarship programme to support 50 students across Asean nations.

No..Wasnt retrenched..I decided to resign and my last day was last Friday...Kinda weird leaving an empty office as most of my colleagues were working from home..No farewell lunch etc..Left like a anak yatim
Feeling very light now like i have lost 20kgs...Glad i left a toxic environment... Guess fear will kick in the next 2 months if dont get a job..Im quite optimistic as finance sector looks ok..I see plenty of jobs available..At the same time wifu wants to me to consider changing my line(if no offers) and join her sister whos is a successful property agent (sudah millionaire i heard) ..She thinks i'll do well under her sis's guidance..Im from finance/investment line btw..

Reason i left:
- mainly the HOD and partially my superior..
- HOD is a sissy type who likes to be with girls..not sure why he has an issue with me..for instance, he doesnt respond to my email but he uses the slides and fwds to the intended recipient cc my manager but kept me out..many more examples but im just too lazy to elaborate..He has also repeated told my manager that she should be in control..In my unit, i run the show as my manager is mostly involved in ad hoc projects..Basically im the key person whereby most people in the department will always refer to me..During MCO, many crazy metrics were added into my KPI by both of them..That drove me to resign..
- Manager- We were good initially when we were reporting separately to our boss previously...He resigned and we were transferred to a new department with a new HOD and i was placed under her with the new arrangement..This was the beginning how our relationship soured..I assume she feels threatened as im only 1 level lower than her and at the same time im also doing professional papers..I noticed she likes lo hide information from me..For instance if an email comes from home office, she will just fwd the excel/power point file and erase the email contents (no nothing P&C for sure)...And she started becoming bossy/arrogant...instead of telling me 'can you help me do this' she just email and instructs 'please do this by....'

Things that i learn:
- you dont see real friends in your colleagues..everyone has an agenda..My HR head who im close to me never even called me to ask why i resigned.. Guess her cut cost KPI is met.. btw they are not taking anyone to replace me..someone else from the department will take over..
- to impress mat sallehs you need fancy power point slides and insert syiok sendiri numbers..make everyone feel good..done you are in good books

**UPDATE**

After being jobless for approximately 9 months, starting work at a FI on 1st April...Salary 15% higher and position upgraded to manazer biggrin.gif Syukur..

Will forever cherish this phase of my life being jobless..Enjoyed binge watching Netflix series and movies that i missed, experienced the struggles of being a delivery rider and got my real estate negotiator license and dabbled in real estate for a few months..Though i enjoyed the work, it was draining out my savings as closing a sales deal is not easy in property...Hence decided to return to the corporate world.. biggrin.gif

I definitely did not regret resigning from my previous job...glad i made that bold move... To those who are still jobless, dont give up hope..your time will come smile.gif

Thinking of quitting job

I'm in finance/investment line. Even before MCO my superior and HOD were really annoying.. Many staffs resigned but there were no replacements, hence I became the dumping ground..
Now with WFH, their uglier side is coming out.. Sigh

About myself...
-no kids
-house loan (morotarium will be great help)
-personal loan (morotarium will be great help)
-have savings for 6 mths..

The main reason why I'm giving a serious thought is because it's taking a toll on my soul.. Sometimes I can't sleep.. Sometimes i get really angry that my heart beats so fast.. Worried I will get a heart attack..

Wifu is supportive.. She offered to help if anything.. She worries for my health..

All this is only happening in the last 3-6 months.. Before that had a good peaceful working life for abt 12 years.. This is my 3rd company and been here for 5 years..

Should I quit my job? Anyone here can share some positive stories or regrets for not having a job in hand before quitting? Will HR view this negatively during interview for not having a job?

Or should I be a rogue worker.. Just don't give a damn on their demands.. I heard HR struggles to remove difficult employees as it is not easy to sack someone..I have no disciplinary problems at all.. Seldom MC

The feeling of quitting.. 60% happiness 40% fear..
