Helvetica the Movie

21 March SmallTalk: In your (type)face.

Kakireka will be screening Helvetica the Documentary Film on the 21st of March on Friday at 8pm in KL next week.

Here is a short synopsis about the film

Millions of people use and read this typeface every
day, on public transport, newspapers, shop fronts and
computers. Through interviews with designers and type
enthusiasts, the film tells the story of how a
typeface drawn by a little-known Swiss designer in
1957 became one of the most popular ways to
communicate. Though it has gone in and out of fashion
it has never gone away - is this a symptom of
globalisation or simply a reflection that it is the
ultimate typeface?

Come to the 21 March 7:21 SmallTalk and get close and
personal with the world's most popular typeface which
celebrated its 50th birthday last year.

For any further detials or if you plan to come please shoot us an email to kenneth at kakireka@gmail.com or norman at defunk.info@gmail.com

There are only a limited amount of seating 60.

Cheers

De-funk & the Designers Directory

http://de-funk.blogspot.com

This is a design blog initiated by myself and a co-founder started to promote design discussion among young designers and students alike and in hopes to create interest and awareness in design content in Malaysia. The name 'defunk' derives from design + function = defunk. Keep in mind that we made this site for you and opinions, comments and criticism are welcomed. Our target audience is design students or design graduates and in the following year (2007) we hope to bring this 'idea' to design colleges around Malaysia. Our focus is on design content of hoping to provide written articles on design, design issues, a collection on local companies or designers, as well the creative thought and process.

Do check out our sister project called the designers directory as well. The purpose of the the designers directory is to create a directory of quality printshops, artshops, design galleries + spaces and design bookstores in Malaysia, therefore designers can have a place that contains this information that is accesible and provided for them.

Short bio

de-funk is a collaborative effort of two individuals who crave design talk and everything else surrounding the 'D' word. De-funk was created for the purpose of generating interests, awareness and breaking boundaries with design within Malaysia. De-funk also hopes to share their experiences, insights and thoughts as designers in Malaysia.

Streamyx connecting problem

Hi everyone,

I appear to be having a problem with connecting to streamyx, I've been trying to connect for the last 3 days. At first I thought it is TMNET that is causing the problem or server down. But I've called them and they say "everything is fine..."

So I got my friend to try my account and he can log on in my account. When I try... it takes a long time to connect and it says 'the remote computer did not respond'. What is the problem here?

I check the light of the adsl line and everything is fine. My modem is functioning properly and no lights are blinking. Is it a modem or a streamyx problem. Please help.. I need the net for my business.

Please help me

I bought an aztech modem about 6 months ago, just a few days ago I couldnt switch on the modem. So, I changed the power adapter and the power light is blinking, but it appears the dsl and phone line light are not on. I would like to ask what exactly is the problem? Should I buy a new modem or should i bring it to the repair store to check it out? Please help.

Much thanks in advance!

Code of Conduct for Client Posting!

To the mods,

I'm just wondering in this section can you please have a sticky for a certain format that companies or people who post job can post them in a certain manner for more clarity and to also give more clarity with specifications.

There should be a code of conduct for companies and clients to comply upon.

What they are looking for?
Who they are looking for?
Type of work?
Freelance or Non - freelance?
Requirements?

Then leave either a contact number, email or a website.
I think this would really really help everybody here as I see alot of clients do not know how to post in a proper and clear manner or have holes in their posting.

Cheers

Designer's Price

Since there is alot of debate and discussion upon prices and quotations in quite a few areas in LYT.NET, I figured we would and should have one in general, to see the general average market price that people are charging for different type of services and projects.. I hope this thread can give an insight and aware of younger and more inexperience designers of the market value and price.

In general as i said in the other thread:

This is just the usual method I calculate my quotations upon. It depends on:

1) type of project - brochure? business card? posters? etc...
2) time
3) size of the work
4) colour or b/w
5) client (going more into more detail would be saying how large is your client? Are they are multinational company who does publishing? or a newly open publishing house which is starting out. But once in a while you do meet projects that are interesting and allow you to have the freedom to express yourself as well as the client having a tight budget. So overall I would charge them 90 - 80% from the given rate i would give them and give them 100% because if you do the task at hand well, they will come back to you for future business.)
6) production costs - printing, scanning, etc
7) transportation cost / transportation reimbursement.

AWARENESS

I was just walking in sg wang a few hours ago and I saw a large amount of designs that are from the internet as well as my friends from certain international forums were used on t shirts. I see it more and more now and I just want to say

"Please do not support plagarism of any sort, please dont plagarise and steal others work from overseas"

I'm not accusing anyone of this but just spreading an awarenes, as i see more and more places that are stealing designs from overseas by the use of internet. This is really a serious problem and I've seen the problem grow more and more. Plagarism is a serious matter and no one should do it and no excuses for such an act.

anyway cheers + peace
