Uber reviews Asia business over bribery allegation

SINGAPORE: Uber Technologies Inc , which is the subject of a federal probe into whether it broke bribery laws, has started a review of its Asia operations and notified US officials about payments made by staff in Indonesia, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Bloomberg report was accurate.

Uber said in August it was cooperating with a preliminary investigation led by the U.S. Department of Justice into whether company managers violated U.S. laws against bribery of foreign officials, specifically the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Uber hired law firm O'Melveny & Myers LLP to investigate how it obtained the medical records of an Indian woman who was raped by an Uber driver in 2014, Reuters reported in June.

O'Melveny & Myers is now examining records of foreign payments and interviewing employees, raising questions about why some potentially problematic business dealings were not disclosed sooner, Bloomberg said on Tuesday (Sep 19)

Attorneys are focused on suspicious activity in at least five Asian countries: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea, Bloomberg said, adding that Uber's law firm is reviewing financial arrangements tied to the Malaysian government that may have influenced lawmakers there.

In Malaysia, Bloomberg reports attorneys working with Uber are "reviewing a web of financial arrangements tied to the Malaysian government that may have influenced lawmakers there".

Uber’s law firm Bloomberg reported "is also investigating a corporate donation, announced in August 2016, of tens of thousands of dollars to the Malaysian Global Initiative and Creativity Centre, a government-backed entrepreneur hub".

It went on to add that around that time, Malaysian pension fund Kumpulan Wang Persaraan, "invested $30 million in Uber, said people familiar with the deal" and less than a year later, "the Malaysian government passed national ride-hailing laws that were favorable to Uber and its peers".

I simply don't understand

there's a girl at my office. she only joined us since April. I noticed that she and her friend took the LRT ride from Bangsar till Gombak, same as mine. in the first month, I don't really bother about her because she joined with some other contract workers and I knew one of them who's one of the office clerk's son who happened to be one of those SPM leavers so I assumed that all of them were SPM leavers. I don't wanna court someone who's only 18.

but that changed last month.

I started noticing that she's been looking at me from far in every chance she got. whether I was at the LRT station, at the lobby while waiting for our turn to punch out of the office, or while walking to the LRT station. It was obvious, and everytime our eyes met, I just quickly look at other place. again, like I said before, I don't want to fall for someone who's only 18.

But she still does it.

one day, while I was walking to the office surau, our paths were crossed. She was with her loyal friend who always walk with her. I let them walk in front of me. and that's when the weirdest awkwardest thing happened to me ever. her friend, while walking, turned at me and just stared at me. I stared back at her without saying anything. and then she turned back to the front. then, it was her turn. she turned around and look at me like I'm one of those celebrities who walked behind her. I looked back at her, not saying anything as well. and then, she turned back around. seriously, I don't even know what happened at that time. I didn't do anything to them, I swear. I didn't even stare at their body. I always have in mind that whenever I walk behind a lady, I'll just look below at the road, lowering my gaze. this is the first time two girls, turned around and stare at me without any reason (or probably there is, I just don't know it yet).

later in the evening, while waiting in line to punch out, she's in front of me. and she smiled. at me. being a friendly man I am, I just smiled back. but I did notice how wide that smile she had on her. it was one of those honest straight from the heart smile. and it was the first time, an unknown girl, smiled at me.

since then, every time our eyes met, we always smiled at each other. whether at the LRT station, at the lobby while waiting for our turn to punch out of the office, or while walking to the LRT station. and while walking to the station, as usual, I walked behind her and her friends, she even turned around and smiled at me. a smile after a smile made my heart grow fond at her. I began to wonder what's her name, where she lives, how old she really is and should I even go further and ask her out.

but of course, before that, I would like to do some experiment on this smiling process.

last Tuesday, while walking to the LRT station, as usual, she walked in front of me with some of her friends at work. god knows how slow they walked together. I couldn't stand slow group walkers. suddenly, a pair of girls walked from behind me and them, and then, walked past the group. I took the chance and walked behind the two girls past the group as well. from the corner of my eye, I can see that she's just stared at me like I did something totally wrong. I walked off and left the group behind me.

the following day, there's a gathering at the office hall. we bumped into each other. but she pretended not see me. it was obvious that she didn't like what I did yesterday.

so, on Thursday, while doing the usual routine of punch out, I decided to smiled at her as if I was trying to reconcile whatever the thing we had. boy, she gave me the widest smile she could had. then, we head to the LRT station. she's in front of me with her friends. this time, I decided not to walk past them and just enjoy walking behind them. she turned around and smiled at me. twice. then, we boarded the same train. I stood near a door, and she stood near to the next door with her friend. I pretended to look at my phone. then, I looked at her. there she was, staring at me with her friend and our eyes met. I smiled, she smiled from afar and giggled with her friend like that same old cliched love story that happened in LRT. I knew that that's the chance for me to ask her number.

when our train arrived at Gombak, I went off first and waited for her just outside of the entrance gate. I saw her and called her. she was totally surprised by my move. I told her that I would like to know her better and wanted to know her phone number. surprised her just smiled and hesitated. her friend was like "bagi je la" and "cepat la" but she still hesitated. I said please, she said that's her first time that someone asked her number and she's not used to it. she said let's just meet at the office. I don't want to push her so I said ok, fine. we'll meet at the office.

then, on Friday, I decided to go to her office. I asked to meet her and she was like "no, not again". she hesitated to meet me but since I waited at the front door, and being told by her friends to go and meet me, she just went to the door and face me. I said I was sorry by surprising her the other day. she said it's ok. I asked her her name. she answered with a bit of stuttering. I asked her where does she lives. she told me she live nearby my housing area. that was great. at least she's being honest. then, I asked for her phone number. again, like yesterday, she hesitates with the same reason. not used to give her number to other guys. again, I begged please. and she still insists. she said her sorry. I was like ok, fine. I'll just head back to my office.

later, in the evening, when I wanted to punch out, I saw one of her friend at the staircase. i heard he said "dia ada ni". obviously referring to me. I ignored him and just punch my card. when I turned around after that, I saw her other friends at the staircase. but not her. they were all like looking above as if she's up there and don't want to come down. some of my friends were there as well. I asked one of them if she's really there and she said yes she is. that disappoints me. she's afraid of me. she doesn't want to see me anymore. no more smiling at each other.

what happened la??

all this while, we smiled at each other everytime our eyes met, then, I stepped up my game and asked her number and she decided to walk out of this. what a disappointment.

the first time a girl look at me from far.
the first time a girl smiled at me.
the first time a girl turned around to look at me and smiled.
and the first time I asked a girl's phone number.
turns out to be like this.

haihh

what went wrong?

should i keep on waiting or move on?

I think I made a thread about her already before. you can search my name and the latest thread from me. so let's just keep it simple.

I really fall in love with this one girl at my workplace but the thing is she already has a boyfriend. I'm still hoping that one day she'll be mine because I know I can be a better partner (read:husband) than her boyfriend.

a lil bit on her: she's chinese who just converted to muslim, her parents still don't know cuz they thought her bf is a buddhist. why i said i can be a better partner? because i believe i have the guts to meet her parents and ask for permission to marry her while her bf don't. and as a muslim, i believe i can guide her better than her bf since her bf isn't a strong believer. and lastly, i have two things that her bf don't. a house and a job. her bf is still studying.

here's the problem. she doesn't know i'm still in love with her. she thinks i'm just being single because i'm not a social kind of guy and i should find a girl to be with. then, there's this one new girl who only recently work in our workplace. she keeps telling me that i should go out with that new girl. i don't want to. i don't think i can date someone when my heart still into her. i do admit that this new girl is kinda pretty.

the other day, the new girl smiled at me and the former girl saw it and she thinks that the new girl is into me. it's funny cuz what made me fell for the former girl was her smile. and when the new girl smiled at me, i didn't feel anything. of course, i smiled back at her since she is my colleague. but i don't feel the same spark that i had when the former girl smiled at me.

so now i'm thinking should i tell the former girl that i still love her or should i just move on and ask the new girl out?

we got chemistry but it means nothing

have you ever felt like you have this chemistry with this one person, it's like you both meant for each other. you're thinking what he/she thinking and he/she is thinking what you're thinking as well. you both saying things that you both wanna say. and you have like this telepathic power that you can know what the other person is getting through. if your life is a disney's movie, you both probably sing together and "finish your duet" (to quote the song in Enchanted).

but the other person is not your partner. they're already with someone else.

have you ever experience that?
