Career Jumping (5-digit salary at 30+?)

Hello Guys,

So I was wondering about career jumping. A few years ago an engineer came to my university and shared his working experience. He said that he had reach 10k+ salary by jumping around a few companies after getting the experience he needed. Tho I did not know how many companies he jumped or how many years (or months) he stayed in a single company. And he specifically said that "No one wants to hire a person that can master only one type of job" (along those lines, I can't quite remember ). I just want to ask is this possible? Or is it better to stay in one company and build your way up?
