slow dsl speed

I wanted to connect all the pcs in my house (total 4) all running xp sp2. I'm using modem + router (TP-Link 8810). As I'm a really noob in networking, I asked my friend to set this things up for me. He connect the modem with a hub and some configuration on the modem, all the computer can connect with the internet (using streamyx 1Mbps).

the problem is:

The connection is unstable. Sometimes it's ok (full speed) and most of the times it's down (with 0kbps download or 3-4 minutes page loading). It is very annoying as I cant download with bittorent or other p2p with fullspeed. Sometimes, my yahoo messenger also cant connect mean there is no connection at all. All the computers in the house facing the same problem.

wrong configuration? unsuitable modem?
my so-called-genius friend also cant solve this.
please help.
