Gold bars, cash mark fall of Indonesia’s top graft hunter

July 13): Rows of gold bars, stacks of US and Singapore dollars and seven suitcases found inside a locked safe have become the defining images of one of the biggest scandals to hit Indonesia’s law-enforcement establishment in years.
Police said they recovered 74kg of gold, plus more than US$15 million (RM61.22 million) in multiple currencies from a house linked to Febrie Adriansyah, who until last week served as Indonesia’s deputy attorney general for special crimes and is now suspected of corruption.
Authorities estimate the bullion and cash found at the Sentul residence in Bogor, southeast of Jakarta, are worth about 476 billion rupiah (RM110 million). Images of neatly arranged gold bars and bundles of banknotes have featured prominently across Indonesian television and news websites since the raids.
The scandal raises serious questions for Indonesia, where the rupiah tumbled 10% in the past year to become Asia’s worst-performing currency over concerns about institutional integrity and policymaking. A big question is whether the discovery of the riches shows that guardrails against graft are working or whether a succession of scandals indicate corruption is worsening.
“Any corruption case involving a senior government official can negatively affect investor confidence as it raises concerns about governance and the investment climate,” said Henry Wibowo, director at Alphagate Capital in Jakarta. “However, if this reflects a genuine commitment by the government to strengthen governance and clean up corruption, it could ultimately be viewed positively.”
The rupiah weakened to its lowest in more than a month on Monday as oil prices and the dollar advanced on the conflict in the Middle East. The 10-year government bond yield climbed 3 basis points to 7.26% while stocks were little changed in volatile trading.
The case has created an unusual institutional dilemma. Police said the investigations would be transferred in stages to the Attorney General’s Office, meaning the institution Febrie led until days ago will now handle proceedings against its former senior official.
News outlet Tempo, meanwhile, reported an apparent confrontation involving police investigators and military personnel during the searches. The military said its presence was part of an authorised assignment to protect prosecutors and wasn’t intended to obstruct the investigation.
The episode reflects longstanding institutional tensions dating to the separation of the police from the armed forces after the fall of President Suharto, according to Kevin O’Rourke, an independent political analyst who publishes Reformasi Weekly. The late dictator’s fall in 1998 ushered in both democracy and a security overhaul aimed at curbing the military’s role in politics and domestic law enforcement.
“This is the latest iteration of longstanding tensions originating in the change in the institutions’ respective roles upon the fall of Suharto,” O’Rourke said.
Police on Saturday named Febrie and businessman Don Ritto suspects in corruption and money-laundering investigations after questioning 15 witnesses, consulting two experts and searching 13 locations in Jakarta and nearby Sentul. Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission separately said it suspects the Sentul residence was formally registered under the name of an unrelated nominee.
Febrie has acknowledged the property where the gold and cash were found was his long-time private residence but denied wrongdoing or ownership of the assets. He said the gold and money “have an owner", without publicly identifying them, and that their provenance would be explained through the legal process.
Immigration authorities have barred Febrie and Ritto from leaving Indonesia for 20 days but Febrie had not been detained as of the latest public statements by prosecutors. Ritto couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
The police announcement came a day after Febrie resigned. The Attorney General’s Office said his departure was intended to safeguard the integrity, objectivity and neutrality of law enforcement.
As Indonesia’s top corruption prosecutor and the operational head of one of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship enforcement programmes, Febrie wielded influence across criminal investigations, state revenue and natural-resource governance.
As head of the Attorney General Office’s Special Crimes Division, he supervised cases involving state tin miner Timah, oil company Pertamina, flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, the free meals programme and former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim.
There have been criticisms of some of those cases. Nadiem’s recent conviction and 10-year prison sentence raised questions among observers over how Southeast Asia’s largest economy distinguishes graft from disputed policy and business decisions.
Febrie also chaired the implementing team of Prabowo’s Forest Area Enforcement Task Force, known as Satgas PKH, placing him at the centre of the administration’s campaign to reclaim land and revenue from palm oil and mining companies accused of operating illegally in forest areas.
Prabowo established the task force in January 2025. Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin chairs its steering committee while senior officials from the prosecutors’ office, police and military help oversee its work.
Febrie was one of the most visible officials in the powerful inter-agency task force, regularly announcing land takeovers and company investigations. In May, Prabowo presided over the handover of 10.3 trillion rupiah in penalties and other state revenue, along with 2.4 million ha of recovered forest land.
The government has also said the task force has taken control of almost 5.9 million ha used for palm oil plantations and more than 12,000ha used for mining.
Police said Febrie is suspected of committing corruption offences while serving as a state official, including in connection with the handling of a case involving state insurer Asabri. The investigations also involve alleged irregularities linked to coal supplies for state electricity company PLN and a debt settlement involving a Krakatau Steel-related entity, though authorities haven’t detailed his alleged role in each matter.
It’s unclear if the probe of Febrie will affect ongoing investigations connected with the high-profile prosecutor but the likelihood is that the episode will reinforce concerns about graft in the country.
Indonesia ranks 109th in Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, below Zambia and Sri Lanka and down 10 places from 2024, when former general Prabowo was elected president.
Prabowo has repeatedly vowed to clamp down on corruption, though his flagship roughly US$15 billion food-for-kids programme, is currently the subject of a graft probe, with his handpicked head of the operation named as a suspect.

KUALA LUMPUR: Flood retention ponds in Jinjang and Batu here have lost about 70 per cent of their original capacity after 17 plots around them were transferred to developers since 2015.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the original 33.5ha flood mitigation system had been significantly compromised.

She said a technical assessment by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) found that the size shrinkage impaired the ponds' primary flood control function and hampered maintenance work by restricting access to the areas

The government cannot continue to allow development that compromises the function of flood retention ponds," she said.

"The interest of the people and the safety of city residents must be prioritised, even if the measures needed require firm decisions to rectify long-inherited problems."

Yeoh said the Federal Territories Department had established a task force chaired by director-general Datuk Azmi Mohd Zain to strengthen coordination and improve flood mitigation efforts in the capital.

She said Kuala Lumpur City Hall would no longer approve planning permission for developments on flood retention pond land until all conditions set by the DID were met.

The move, she added, was aimed at safeguarding the ponds' original function and ensuring maintenance access was preserved amid rising concerns about flood risks in the capital.

The Batu and Jinjang flood retention ponds form part of the larger Kuala Lumpur Flood Mitigation Scheme introduced in the early 2000s to prevent flash floods in the city.

Commissioned by the DID in 2002, the system is designed to divert excess water from Sungai Gombak and Sungai Keroh into the retention ponds during heavy rainfall.

The water would be gradually released back into the rivers once the rain subsides.

According to official records from Kuala Lumpur DID, the ponds in Jinjang, Batu and Kepong were built on former mining land.

The system was designed to prevent the heaviest floods that occur in the capital once every 100 years.

Jinjang is a long-established township in the city's northwest under the Kepong parliamentary constituency, whereas Batu encompasses a wider northern Kuala Lumpur area linked to Sungai Batu and Jalan Ipoh

Dua-tiga tahun kebelakangan ini, peniaga kecil dan sederhana, khususnya dalam komuniti Cina, rasa sangat tertekan: tafsiran cukai kadang-kadang tak masuk akal, kena bayar lebih, tetapi bila terlebih bayar, bayar semula (refund) pula lambat.

Di atas kertas, kerajaan bangga umum kutipan cukai meningkat; di bawah, orang yang bayar cukai rasa mereka sedang diperah. Bila retorik “lawan orang maha kaya” sering digunakan, tetapi kroni lama nampak elok saja berkawan dengan kerajaan, peniaga kecil rasa merekalah yang jadi bola politik.

Selagi cara kita mengutip dan mengurus cukai tidak dirasakan adil dan munasabah oleh mereka, jangan hairan kalau keyakinan pengundi Cina terhadap kerajaan makin menurun.

Indonesia to Redenominate Rupiah & Remove Zeros, IDR1,000 to Be IDR1

Indonesia is planning to introduce a new bill to redenominate its currency, the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), essentially removing the zeros. For example, IDR1,000 would just be IDR1.

The move is part of the Republic’s efforts to improve economic efficiency, maintain stability and improve the IDR’s credibility.

According to Reuters, the bill is a carryover draft bill that is planned to be finalised by 2027 by the country’s Finance Ministry.

The plan to slash zeroes from the IDR is not something new, as it had been discussed several times in the past.

Most recently, such a move was submitted as a draft by the Indonesian Government to Parliament in 2013, proposing that three zeroes be slashed from the IDR banknote. However, the draft was ultimately shelved.

Indonesian portal Detik reported that Finance Minister Yudhi Sadewa had prepared the regulatory framework related to the redenomination of the IDR under the Regulation of the Minister of Finance (PMK) Number 70 of 2025 concerning the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Finance for the Year 2025-2029.

PMK 70/2025 was established on 10 October 2025 and came into force on 3 November 2025. Yudhi is targeting for the bill to be completed in either 2026 or 2027.

However, it was not revealed how many zeros the bill would slash from the IDR.

Kuala Lumpur: Umur akses pengeluaran simpanan Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP) pada 55 tahun dianggap terlalu rendah bagi struktur demografi Malaysia yang semakin menua, demikian menurut Bank Dunia.

Ia juga mencadangkan supaya umur kelayakan pencen sosial dinaikkan secara berperingkat kepada antara 65 hingga 70 tahun bagi memastikan sistem perlindungan sosial negara kekal mampan seiring dengan jangka hayat rakyat Malaysia yang semakin panjang

Ketika ini, umur kelayakan pencen sosial ialah 60 tahun, jauh lebih rendah berbanding kebanyakan negara lain dan tidak lagi seiring dengan peningkatan jangka hayat sihat sejak skim itu diperkenalkan pada 1982.

Langkah menaikkan umur kelayakan itu, menurut analisis terkini berasaskan data Laporan Survei Pendapatan dan Perbelanjaan Isi Rumah (HIES) 2022 oleh Jabatan Perangkaan Malaysia (DOSM), juga dapat membantu memastikan bantuan disasarkan dengan lebih baik kepada warga emas yang benar-benar memerlukan.

"Data HIES menunjukkan kadar kemiskinan relatif meningkat ketara apabila ketua isi rumah berumur lebih tua, masing-masing 24 peratus bagi mereka berumur 60 tahun ke atas, 42 peratus (65 tahun ke atas) dan 49 peratus (70 tahun ke atas). Ini menunjukkan risiko kemiskinan semakin meningkat seiring pertambahan usia," katanya.

Bank Dunia berkata, peningkatan umur kelayakan disifatkan wajar jika disertai peluasan liputan skim pencen sosial kepada lebih ramai penerima, bagi menampung mereka yang tiada simpanan persaraan atau pencen tetap.

Malah, katanya, dari sudut ekonomi politik, pelaksanaan dua langkah itu iaitu memperluas liputan dan menaikkan umur kelayakan secara serentak, lebih sesuai berbanding memperluas terlebih dulu dan menangguhkan kenaikan umur, yang boleh menjejaskan kepercayaan awam dan menambah tekanan fiskal kerajaan.

Tegasnya, penetapan umur kelayakan baharu antara 65 dan 70 tahun lebih sejajar dengan realiti demografi Malaysia yang menyaksikan penduduk hidup lebih lama dan lebih sihat berbanding empat dekad lalu.

Bagi mengelakkan kesan negatif terhadap penerima sedia ada, mereka dicadangkan terus menerima bantuan, manakala penerima baharu akan tertakluk kepada umur kelayakan baharu yang lebih tinggi.

Langkah itu juga akan membolehkan kerajaan menawarkan kadar pencen sosial yang lebih tinggi kepada penerima layak tanpa menambah beban fiskal secara mendadak.

Kajian oleh Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) dan Pusat Penyelidikan Kesejahteraan Sosial (SWRC) menunjukkan pendekatan sedemikian mampu mengimbangi kebajikan rakyat dan tanggungan kewangan negara.

Pada masa depan, umur kelayakan pencen sosial juga boleh disesuaikan secara automatik mengikut peningkatan jangka hayat sihat, sebagaimana amalan di beberapa negara maju dalam Pertubuhan Kerjasama dan Pembangunan Ekonomi (OECD).

PETALING JAYA: Mayat seorang wanita ditemukan dalam keadaan tidak berpakaian dan tangan terikat di kawasan semak di Seri Kembangan hari ini.
Harian Metro melaporkan Ketua Polis Serdang Muhamad Farid Ahmad berkata, mayat dipercayai warganegara itu ditemukan oleh orang awam berhampiran bulatan Blue Water Estate, dan pihaknya menerima laporan pada kira-kira 3.45 petang.

Mangsa berketinggian 144cm, berambut perang melepasi paras bahu dan berkuku panjang. Dia turut memakai subang perak di kedua-dua telinga, serta gelang kain berwarna hijau dan merah dan memiliki tatu di tangan kanan.

Muhamad Farid berkata, siasatan lanjut dijalankan mengikut Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Toll collection on Section 1 of the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) will start at 12.01am on Saturday (Oct 25), ending the two-month grace period that followed its Aug 30 opening.

The concession company, EKVE Sdn Bhd, said the toll implementation signifies the highway is now fully operational under its management.

As part of the Madani government's initiative to ease the public's burden, EKVE users have enjoyed a toll exemption since Section 1 was officially opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Aug 30, 2025.

"The temporary toll relief was provided to allow users to familiarise themselves with the new route and encourage smoother traffic flow between Ampang, Hulu Langat, and Sungai Long," the statement read.

Toll collection on the EKVE Section 1 will be fully electronic, using Touch 'n Go cards, SmartTAG, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

EKVE also advised motorists to observe all traffic regulations and directional signs at the toll plazas to ensure a smooth journey. Enquiries can be directed to the EKVE hotline at 1-300-88-3583. -

Malaysia is considering reforms to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) payout structure to provide retirees with more sustainable income after retirement, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.

According to The Edge Malaysia, while the current policy remains unchanged — allowing members to withdraw their savings in full, partially, or via scheduled payments — the government is studying a new system that would split members’ accounts into flexible savings and retirement income savings.

Flexible savings would allow members to withdraw money anytime based on personal needs, while retirement income savings would be paid out in periodic or monthly instalments until depleted.

The proposal would apply to new members once implemented, though existing members could opt in voluntarily.

Lim said the reform is necessary as Malaysians face structural challenges such as low wages, inconsistent contribution patterns, early withdrawal eligibility at 55 that does not align with life expectancy, and limited financial literacy

“Fewer than one in four EPF members have accumulated enough savings to meet the fund’s basic threshold for retirement adequacy. Meanwhile, more than 42% of senior citizens currently live in relative poverty,” she said.
