KUALA LUMPUR, June 26, 2015:

If you think it was only the women who were asked to cover up over “indecent” dressing, think again.

In a rare case of unintentional gender equality, a man was asked to cover up at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Lost and Found department after he showed up wearing “cute pink shorts (knee length) and sandals”.

While Wilson Ng was asked to cover up last month, he decided to share his account following the spate of incidents involving women and the dress code.

In his blog, Placesandfoods.com, Ng said he left his bag at KLIA after returning from Taipei with his family and was subsequently told to reclaim it at the Lost and Found Department.

He said upon registering at the Aviation Security (AVSEC) office, he was told by the security guard to go home and change his clothes as there was a “dress code to enter the KLIA building and the lost and found baggage office.”

“This took me by surprise and I was shocked and upset over their request as my house was not near KLIA. I told the guard that I was not told about any dress code when I called up a day before there was nothing mentioned about the dress code and there is nothing mentioned on the website as well.

“Because I insisted they told me that they have pants and shoes that I could wear. So I wore the pants that I could not zip and shoes without socks, I went to get my security tag and went into the lost and found baggage office,” he wrote.

Ng said as he was leaving the premise, he saw a Caucasian tourist cursing the officers, as he was apparently wearing shorts and sandals.

“To me, rules are rules and I will follow the rules, full stop. But they should have a notice on their website about the dress code. I am not angry at the security officers as they are just doing their job.”

Ng’s revelation comes in the wake of a woman being told to wear a sarong at a Road Transport Department (JPJ) office earlier this month before she could be attended to.

On Monday, two women, one of whom was a journalist, were denied entry to the Selangor State Secretariat building after being allegedly told they were indecently dressed.

A day after, a woman visiting a patient at the Sungai Buloh hospital was instructed to wrap a towel around her waist before she could enter the ward as she was wearing shorts.

Yesterday, a woman wearing a knee-length skirt, was allegedly denied entry into the court complex in Penang.

Body image experts slam ‘Belly Button Challenge’

BEIJING, June 13 — Body image experts have slammed the ‘Belly Button Challenge’ trending in China, saying that the craze could lead to body image issues and insecurities.

Thousands have taken to the social media to attempt the challenge, which requires reaching their arm over their backs to touch their belly buttons in the belief that it shows the sign of a fit physique.

Some has debunked the trend as scores of fit people attempting the challenge are unable to do it, saying that long limbs, a slim waist and some flexibility are required, although an image showing a man with a beer-belly completing the challenge seem to disprove this theory.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Defenders of the recent pet-a-dog event have no right to get upset over death threats and slander from its critics if they also defend freedom of speech, said a portal linked to Muslim group Pembela today.

The group singled out Syahredzan Johan who represented organiser Syed Azmi Alhabshi, saying the civil liberties lawyer had in the past supported the National Unity Consultative Council’s (NUCC) Harmony Bills, which allegedly does not criminalise hate speech unless it threatens physical harm.

“What we find absurd was why Syahredzan, who all this while wanted to be a champion and hero of freedom of speech such as in the laws he drafted, wanted to restrict others’ freedom of speech to criticise the event?” said the portal called Bangkit.

“Did [the threats] want to harm the organisers and participants? Even if there were comments with elements of threat, is it true they had an intent to threaten and was the intent made clear by a team of lawyers?”

The portal also said that Syahredzan was one of the lawyers who walked against the Sedition Act 1948, suggesting that any replacement of the controversial law must provide for mens rea, which in legal term means a “guilty mind” necessary to commit a crime.

“Does the freedom of speech belong only to Azmi Shahrom [sic] alone in the world?” it asked, referring to the University of Malaya law lecturer Dr Azmi Sharom who was charged with sedition last month, making him the first academic to be caught in Putrajaya’s recent sedition dragnet.

In a press conference yesterday, Syahredzan said that accusations claiming Syed Azmi is Christian or a follower of the Muslim Shiah sect, deemed as deviant by Putrajaya, are false and defamatory.

Syahredzan dismissed the need for his client to prove that he was a Muslim but said those who have defamed the organiser of the “I Want to Touch a Dog” event should stop all their attacks.

The portal Bangkit also alleged that by holding the event, Syed Azmi had not only insulted Muslims in the country, but subsequently the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as a designated Head of Islam, who was allegedly appointed to “protect Islam from any insults at all times”.

“What would His Highness feel when international news channels broadcasted faces of Malay-Muslim girls, wearing uniform yellow shirts, and wearing headscarves as Muslims, excitedly touching dogs in many poses?”

“It was as if portraying the citizens of His Highness — the Head of State of an Islamic country where Islam is exalted as a Religion of the Federation — as Muslims who were desperate towards dogs,” it alleged.

Yesterday, Syed Azmi read out a press release apologising for any discomfort sparked by the event, maintaining that the event was only meant to help the public overcome their fear of dogs, and not promote liberalism or distort Islamic teachings.

Although Syed Azmi is not the sole organiser of the “I Want to Touch a Dog” event, which was carried out with the aid of around 10 to 15 other individuals, the youth was unfortunately the “face” of the one-off event and has had to face the brunt of criticisms, Syahredzan said.

Since then, Syed Azmi has been the target of hate-filled messages threatening to injure or kill him, forcing him to turn to the police and online regulator Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for assistance.

Detractors have also spread rumours and allegations claiming that Syed Azmi is a covert Christian or a Shiah Muslim out to spread liberalism or alternative teachings.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek however said on Thursday that the matter is out of MCMC’s hands, and should instead falls under the police.
