Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino says “anime must not repeat Disney’s worst mistake”

It seems Japanese creators are catching onto the low-performing creations of the western world, in particular Disney, as the creator of Gundam recently stated that the anime industry mustn’t repeat their “worst mistake”.

Yoshiyuki Tomino, who is known for originally creating the long-running Gundam franchise, was interviewed where he shared his insights into the anime industry.

Tomino believes anime to be in a “golden age” of sorts, one that could easily be destroyed if the industry were to follow in the footsteps of Disney.

The veteran creator believed modern Disney is the result of when animation “loses heart”, and criticized its transition from hand-drawn animation to digital in the interview (via fullfrontal.moe).

Tomino also labeled Disney’s latest films as “depressing” and “boring”, and explained that these poor results are likely due to their production goals.

The Gundam creator asserted that Bandai Namco Filmworks, who handles the Gundam series, is already picking up on Disney’s bad practices, what with it attempting larger projects whilst straying away from traditional animation.

“Empty blockbusters without any personality” is how Tomino described Disney as a brand, and he explained that creators must be permitted to experiment, while executives like producers have to “get their hands dirty when developing a project.”

Many have negatively criticized Disney’s works in the last few years on a number of different levels, be it with Star Wars and it’s disrespecting of the lore, to just disrespecting fans in general.

Titanic tour CEO didn’t hire ‘50-year-old white guys’ because they weren’t ‘inspirational’

The OceanGate CEO who is trapped on a 22-foot submersible on an ill-fated voyage to see the Titanic wreck once explained how he didn’t hire “50-year-old white guys” with military experience to captain his vessels because they weren’t “inspirational.”

Stockton Rush, 61, added that such expertise was unnecessary because “anybody can drive the sub” with a $30 video game controller.

Rush’s Everett, Wash.-based company has made two previous trips to the 1912 wreckage of the “unsinkable” ship, which is 12,500 feet underwater at the bottom of the Atlantic some 370 miles off the coast of Canada.

The founder and CEO — who navigates the missing Titan submersible with a cheap Amazon video game joystick — has been trapped on the tiny vessel since Sunday with four wealthy adventurers who paid $250,000 apiece for the tour.

A frantic Coast Guard rescue operation was underway to locate the tiny vessel and save the marooned team — who had less than one day’s worth of oxygen as of Wednesday morning, officials said.

NEW: All-Muslim City Council Bans Pride Flag On Public Property

The Hamtramck City Council, a suburban area in Detroit composed entirely of Muslim members, has unanimously voted to prohibit the display of LGBTQ+ flags on city property.

The decision, announced following a tense, near four-hour deliberation on Tuesday night, permits only the Prisoner of War flag, the city, state, and the American flag, as well as flags representing the native countries of the city’s immigrant residents on city property.

The ruling applies solely to city flagpoles, allowing businesses and residents to continue flying any flag of their choice on private property. Despite the ban encompassing “any religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group flags,” the resolution, which arrived in the middle of Pride Month, has been perceived as a pointed attack on the LGBTQ+ community.

The issue of the Pride flag being flown on city property had been a contentious topic in Hamtramck, with the city’s first Muslim mayor, Amer Ghalib, making it a campaign issue in 2021. Some members of the all-Muslim council echoed Ghalib’s sentiments, stating that the Pride flag conflicted with the beliefs of some members of their faith.

“We want to respect the religious rights of our citizens,” council member Nayeem Choudhury said of the diverse enclave’s 27,000 residents, more than 40% of whom were not born in the US, with many of Yemeni or Bangladeshi descent.

Mohammed Hassan, the councilman who sponsored the resolution, vehemently denied the allegations of bigotry. “We love everybody. We don’t hate anybody. We don’t discriminate (against) anybody. We are living very respectfully without hate,” he said.

Despite these assurances, many critics of the decision were unappeased. “You can pretend that this resolution is meant to protect diversity, but you know very well that all it will do is encourage discrimination against the LGBTQ community,” one attendee of the meeting commented. Another resident, who moved from California to Hamtramck for its reputation of diversity, expressed her disappointment and skepticism about the city’s commitment to inclusivity.

The resolution’s passage has also drawn criticism from Detroit City FC, a professional soccer team based in Hamtramck. “Pride flags send a powerful message that all are welcome and that the community values diversity,” the team said on Twitter, urging the council to reconsider its decision.

The Little Mermaid’: Chinese State Run Media Warns Disney To Stop Pushing Racism Narrative Around Fairy Tales Or They Will Lose Their “Magic Glory”

An article in China’s Global Time, an English-language outlet run by the Communist Party of China, warns The Walt Disney Company to stop pushing a racism narrative around The Little Mermaid and other classic fairy tales or they will end up losing their “magic glory.”

In an article published this week, Global Times specifically called out The Walt Disney Company for pushing “political correctness” with the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

They claim, “Disney’s decision to cast a person of color as the lead in The Little Mermaid seemingly was made to break stereotypes and promote equality, but so far, the negative reactions outweigh the positive ones.”

“This begs the question of whether Disney’s ‘political correctness’ actions are motivated by capital interests or genuine concern for representation,” Global Times wrote.

The outlet went even further by insinuating that The Walt Disney Company is the one creating and spreading the entire racism narrative surrounding the film, “The controversy surrounding Disney’s forced inclusion of minorities in classic films is not about racism, but its lazy and irresponsible storytelling strategy. ”

It then questions, “If the company truly wants to represent marginalized groups, why not create original stories that reflect their experiences instead of turning classic tales into ‘sacrificial lambs’ for political correctness?”

They even warn Disney to stop going down this path, “When the beautiful stories that have accompanied countless children’s childhoods become arenas for racial conflict, they lose their meaning and become devoid of romance and fantasy, replaced by arguments about skin color.”

“If Disney continues following this path, audiences, especially innocent children will no longer care if the ‘prince and princess live happily ever after,’ but ‘what is the skin color of the prince and princess,’ and the fairy tale will lose its magic glory,” the Global Times concluded.

Not only did Global Times warn Disney to stop pursuing this strategy in another article published earlier this week, but they also noted that the controversy that they insinuate is being created by Disney is being used by American leftists to push “political correctness” on Chinese audiences.

The article begins by discussing recently reported poor pre-sales in China for The Little Mermaid. It notes that ticketing site Maoyan reported that the film had only sold $85,000 worth of tickets as of Thursday.

The article alleges that a number of people are using these poor pre-sales to target Chinese moviegoers and accuse them of “racial discrimination.”

Not only does it claim they are using the poor pre-sales to make accusations of “racial discrimination,” but it also claims the accusation is done “to impose their politically correct standards on Chinese audiences, and use this to sow discord between China and African groups.”

From there it also points to a poster for The Little Mermaid depicting actress Halle Bailey with blue skin while a U.S. poster shows her with her natural skin color.

It specifically claims that numerous commentators are using the posters to “hint that Chinese audiences are ‘racist.'” It also asserts that The Walt Disney Company released a Chinese version of the U.S. poster.

The article goes on to declare, “The vast majority of Chinese audiences do not have any bias against a black Little Mermaid and would rather evaluate the film based on its own merits.”

It then specifically takes aim at American leftists saying they “are imposing their own politically correct values on Chinese audiences, expecting them to embrace the film the same way as Western audiences have. This expectation is unreasonable since Chinese don’t have such political correctness, as the country’s modern history is more about being invaded by Westerners rather than colonizing or oppressing black people.”

“Instead, China has always maintained brotherly relations with Africa and has never needed an ‘atonement’ mentality prevalent in Hollywood,” the Global Times article says.

After discussing China’s relations with African countries it concludes by making another accusation, “Western ‘white leftist’ netizens using their political correctness to kidnap Chinese audiences is naked cultural hegemony.”

The article finishes, “Some people simply don’t have a clue how to reflect on themselves but only stand on a so-called moral high ground to criticize others. Colonizing a group of people on Earth and then yelling at another group for not sharing its own guilty conscience – how convenient to always be the right one!”

Global Times had previously published an article in 2019 discussing Bailey’s casting as Ariel and asserted that “Chinese audiences aren’t buying into the casting decision.”

They added, “Although some Chinese netizens think Bailey is beautiful and sweet, they generally hold the opinion that the casting choice is a disruption of the character who originally appeared as a white princess with red hair in the Disney cartoon.”

One Piece is one of the most popular anime series that has been running for over two decades. The epic adventure of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates has captured the hearts of millions of fans around the globe. The anime series is known for its outstanding storytelling, action, humor, and emotional moments that are loved by fans of all ages.

The show continues to gain millions of fans and as a result, a live-action series was announced in 2020 based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name. While some fans of the series felt that it was a good idea, others called it a horrible idea due to Netflix’s earlier adaptations of anime series like Death Note, Bleach and Cowboy Bebop were all a disaster. Recently, a trusted scoper from Hollywood tells that the CGI in One Piece was abominable, and fans were not surprised about it.

The First Impressions of One Piece’s Live-Action Series
When the announcement of the live-action series of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece was announced, it was met with a lot of criticism by anime and manga fans. Recently, Divinity Seeker gave a scoop on the test screening of the live-action series by Netflix, where they stated that the show “tested horribly,” as the CGI was horrible and the story of One Piece made no sense to the casual viewers, hence every episode of the Netflix adaptation are being rewritten.

In a series of tweets, Divinity Seeker stated that the first episode of the series heavily deviated from the source material. The first half of the episode was full of flashbacks of a young Monkey D. Luffy, and the other half of the episode quickly introduced the viewers to the first four crewmates of the Straw Hat Pirates.

The scooper continued that his source stated that the tone of the show is not working for them, and the looks of the cast were different from the original characters which added to the difficulty of the live-action series, making it inconsistent. And the Baratie restaurant would be featured in the third episode of the series.

However, he acknowledged that he does not know anything about the original show, and from what he saw from the test screening looked fine to him, but some of them had unnatural hair color.

While the first test screening failed to meet the expectations of the creators, they are making changes so that it can add to the popularity of the anime and manga series. But is a live-action One Piece series possible that features authentic characters and a story true to the source material?

The One Piece Adaptation Has Already Raised Concerns
The idea of the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece was already bad news, and numerous fans of the show were unsure if the OTT platform could pull off a successful adaptation of the series. But there were serious concerns as if not made correctly, it would infuriate the fans of the manga and anime series
One Piece is an anime that features a complex and layered plot, that has been running since 1999, due to the show’s unique art style and intricate plot building which has kept its audience engrossed for over two decades. Having the same art style in the live-action series would be difficult and even if creators use CGI to achieve the same art style, it would be difficult to give the charm and charisma as the manga or anime.

The show also features unique body features of certain characters, while most of the Straw Hat Pirates look like normal human beings but characters like Franky the Cyborg, and Brook have unique body features which are easy to be created in anime but it would look cartoonish in a live-action series. Moreover, all the Straw Hat Pirates have a unique charm to them, which can not be replicated in the One Piece show.

Lastly, Netflix does not do justice to anime adaptations as they fail to capture the same essence of the source material, they have tried in the past and have failed miserably. Moreover, as Divinity Seeker stated that the episodes are being rewritten, which shows that the One Piece series by Netflix will move away from the source material, which would affect the original essence of the show.

Pokemon card tournament DQs player for laughing while saying his preferred pronouns

A nervous Pokemon TCG player claims he was disqualified from the Charlotte Pokemon Regional about he laughed while giving his “preferred pronouns.”

Makani Tran lost out on $800, two flights, and time off school after his time at the Charlotte Pokemon Regional was cut short for a bizarre reason.

In a Twitlonger, the youngster revealed that his weekend turned to tears before he could even make a move against his opponent, Alex Schemanske, one of the US’s best players, on stream.

According to Tran, as he walked over to the stream area, a judge asked him what his preferred pronouns were and seemed to fumble over his words. That’s when the trouble started.

Pokemon card player disqualified after pronoun kerfuffle

In his post, Tran said that his nerves got the better of him when asked about his pronouns, leading him to respond, “Um he or him or uh.”

Tran claimed that he struggled to think of a third pronoun and felt embarrassed as he tried to do so, resulting in him nervously laughing a bit.

After Alex shared his pronouns without issue, Tran followed up by resharing his, but once again awkwardly laughed. This resulted in the Pokemon card judge taking issue with how Makani replied.

“Okay, just wanted to check to be safe. I go by they/them so don’t be a jerk about it,” the judge reportedly said.

A bit into the match, Tran and Schemanske were pulled off stage by the head judge and told that another match would be streamed instead.

It turns out, the way Tran had answered the pronoun question had caused some issues. After admitting to awkwardly laughing due to nervousness, he was disqualified.

“The judge said that while he believed that I had no bad intentions, it didn’t matter because at the end of the day, someone was offended and upset,” Tran added.

For his part, Alex Schemanske even noted on Twitter that he didn’t feel his opponent should have been disqualified, but added that judges are unable to share their side of the story.

Luckily, this story does have a bit of a happy ending. After the disastrous DQ, a Go Fund Me was set up to replace Makani’s expenses and it’s already surpassed its goal of $1,500 by over one grand.

It’s not clear if changes will be implemented to prevent issues like this from happening again, but at least the young star will be getting reimbursed.
