Hey guys,

I got to know of this initiative by a Teach for Malaysia volunteer (Chan Oga) to send 10 rural Malaysian kids to Washington DC; I've made a contribution and hope you guys could help too. I've contacted "Chan Oga" for more details on why she has embarked on this initiative and also what the kids will be doing at Washington DC.

Hi! I am Teacher Oga. I teach Science in SMK Sungai Manggis, a high-need rural school in Banting, Selangor. I am working on a project to send 10 deserving underprivileged students to Washington DC for the life-changing educational trip of their lifetime. Before I explain about my project, here is a little bit about me. I was born and bred in Petaling Jaya, where I was fortunate enough to have opportunities advertising to the crowd I was in. Colleges, malls, exhibitions were not too far away. I landed myself scholarships, have travelled around, and know exactly what to do and where to go to be what I want to be. That is because I was born into a fortunate family in the city where opportunities came knocking. After graduating, I decided to devote 2 years into teaching and am now placed in SMK Sungai Manggis.

In SMK Sungai Manggis, 80% of my students survive on a household income of RM1000/USD$305 a month. Half of them come from broken families or have lost at least one parent at the age of 16. 1 out of 6 students are estimated to drop out each year. Half a day spent at school means losing the opportunity to earn a crucial sum of RM20 for the day. 70% of my students are many years behind in their English- which unfortunately will limit their opportunities to quality higher education and desirable careers, if nothing is done to change this now. With the skills and resources I have, I know I can do something more beyond the classroom for these students- something big enough to shake them out of the norms they are in. That is when I thought of offering my students the opportunity to visit an exciting and inspiring place overseas. I picked Washington DC because it would be the ideal destination for career, university, community and cultural exposure while emphasizing on English. I want the trip to Washington DC to inform students that they are worthy of big dreams despite their background, empower them to dream and achieve big beyond the norms of those around them, inspire other students and their community to succeed for a better life trajectory, and change the culture of achievement in SMK Sungai Manggis.

To achieve that, this trip will challenge students to take the extra mile to improve their written and spoken command of English, provide the first global exposure for students to develop into competent global citizens.”, empower students to dream beyond their family and community’s capacity and set big goals for themselves and community service, and leave SMK Sungai Manggis with an exciting trip that students and teachers will look forward to and work towards annually. The trip to Washington Dc is happening from 16th till the 26th of November, 2013. Activities include university visits to the American and Georgetown University, career visit to the World Bank, community service at Martha’s Table and cultural exposure at the Capitol City. Besides that, students will be engaging in English activities where they will be provided with English dictionaries and required to list nouns, adjectives and verbs related to their day’s activity as well as write a reflective essay every evening. Since June 2013, I have started a crowd-funding page, created a Facebook event page, have liaised with individuals in Washington DC including a tour company to make this trip happen. This Thursday, I will be meeting an officer at MACEE to discuss sponsorship. Up to date, we have collected RM10482 out of the required RM85000. This Sunday, my students and I will be at The Curve 10am-10pm to sell items for the fundraising.

Bagman Snapshot Trekker

I am interested in the Bagman Snapshot Trekker.
Reason being its affordable and fits both laptop and DSLR.

I have a 15.6" inch laptop, a EOS 400D with battery grip, a 24-70 f2.8 L and a 580EX2.

Will I be able to fit everything into the bag with room to spare?

Nokia 5800XM Bug?

Hi there,

I just bought my 5800 XM a few days ago.
It's running on version 21.0.025.

I'm facing problems with the alarm.
When I choose to set a new alarm, there are 3 things which I can change.
The first is the time, then the description and repeat.

The problem is, I can't even edit the alarm time (even after double tapping the screen) nor the description.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Any solution to this?

Virus attack?

Greetings dear Lowyatians,

My school is facing this problem whereby the computers only shows the drive where windows is installed but the others are missing.

Furthermore, the windows defender and other antivirus programs are effectively blocked by this "virus". The windows scanner will give the "not responding" when executed, for which you either click wait or close it.

Do you have any solutions that I can try?

If you would view the EXIF data of your photographs, there's this "AUTHOR" field.
I would like to know how do I make it so that every photography I take will have my name in the "AUTHOR" field.

Alright, first off, I know nothing of programming.

This is my scenario : I have a bunch of links (that grows) in my website but I would like to have a "real-time" search function that is able to filter the links as visitors type in "text" into a designated box. How may I do that with Java?

**I've read some tutorial links posted up on the above thread but I still can't quite grasp it. I don't even know how to "compile" the codes.

Speedlite 580EX II

Dear forumers,

I have been using my speedlite for a few months now and have been enjoying the "enhancement" to my camera gear.

I've always liked the ETTL function.
However, I noticed two things.
It switches from ETTL to TTL frequently by itself and when I take a picture, it refuses to fire.

Is it a common thing or is it a flaw?

I guess the contact between the flash and the shoe isn't that good but I would like other views and input.

55-200mm Lens

Hei there, I have owned a Canon 400D with a 18-55mm kit lens for quite some time now.
Right now, I'm interested on purchasing a 55-200mm lens.
I've looked around and spotted 3 lenses of different brands.
What I want is a lens that is worth the money I'm paying.
I was quoted RM 800+ for the canon, the tamron was RM 400+ while sigma RM 600+ ( or was it the other way round. )
Suggestions of other lenses are much welcomed.
Just try not to break the RM 1000 limit.
Here are the three models I'm currently deciding on.

Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM
Tamron AF55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro

"Hair" in viewfinder

Whenever I look through my viewfinder, I see some sort of black hair.
However, when I take the picture, everything is fine.
I tried removing it but it still remained there.

As shown above, there will be a pool tournament organised by the RAC Bangsar, District 3300 together with the Provisional Rotaract Club of Inti College Subang Jaya. Alright, you might ask about the joining fee. Take note that lunch is served ( fried chicken, spaghetti, fried rice and noodles ) buffet style with a free flow of cordial drinks.

First off, my camcorder uses casettes.
I got a firewire cable to attach my camcorder to my PC.
My PC, detected the camera and it was installed.
However, I look into the camera through the PC and saw no files in it.
So how do I acquire the DV files?

Problem description: Whenever I try to load a page, the loading times for it is extremely long. I have to click the STOP button and the refresh the page many times before it is loaded. On the other hand, my MSN keeps signing out. The connection doesn't break.
