Businessman shot dead at busy traffic junction

MIRI: A businessman was shot dead at a busy traffic junction near Mega Hotel here on Monday.

The victim, in his late 40s, was in his four-wheel drive when he was gunned down by assailants who were on a motorcycle at about 6pm.

He was believed to be driving along Jalan Permaisuri heading into the city centre during the incident.

It is learnt that the victim, a local Miri man, was involved in various businesses, including entertainment and finance.

Miri police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong confirmed the shooting but declined to give more details.

"We are investigating. We are now at the scene," he said.

The incident is one of several shootings in the state in recent months.

On Jan 11, a 41-year-old pub owner was shot at point-blank while entering an office equipment supplier's shop in Brooke Drive in Sibu.

Lau Leh Ing died on the way to a private specialist centre.

Lau's killing came hardly a week after the gruesome murder of a businessman, his two children and his mother.

HTC will be shutting down its office in South Korea, reports The Next Web.

The reason for this is reportedly due to HTC's inability to compete with Korean companies like Samsung and even LG on their home ground, where sales of HTC devices are reportedly “sluggish”. Apple is the only other non-native company that has done well in this market.

This does not bode well for HTC, who is also losing ground to Samsung in other market. HTC barely managed to scrape a profit in the second quarter. On the other hand, Samsung is growing from strengths and managed to achieve an impressive $5.9 billion in operating profits, overshadowed only by Apple in the mobile segment.

We'll see how HTC performed in the third quarter when they release their quarterly report. Hopefully, the One series of smartphones would have helped bolster the company's sales and profit figures.

Dreamhack's record breaking 120Gbps connection was fast enough to replace a certain household appliance, but next to what's Norway's cooking up it looks almost antiquated. The Gathering, Norway's annual week-long LAN party, plans to set a new world record for the "fastest internet access in the universe" with a 200Gbps connection. "No way we would let the Swedes keep the lead on this," says Gathering head of information Simon Eriksen Valvik, "we didn't just raise the bar a little, we moved it a story up." The connection is reportedly faster than the combined bandwidth of Thailand, and will be capable of downloading 5,120 songs a second. Don't bee too envious though, the ludicrously quick network is only temporary. Representatives from Altibox, the Norwegian network that's partnering with The Gathering to break the record, say that Norway simply doesn't have the capacity to support these kinds of speeds on a day to day basis. The gap is being filled with foreign internet capacity, piped in by Level 3. Tickets for the event are already sold out, so speed freaks desperate for the fastest internet in the universe will just have to settle for the fastest internet in the neighborhood. At least until next year.
