Terror Attack in Australia? Driver Plows Vehicle into Pedestrians in Melbourne

Breaking news out of Melbourne, Australia, that at least three people have died after a man plowed a vehicle into a group of pedestrians near a shopping mall.

According to one witness, the driver was screaming, "Allahu Akhbar, Allahu Akhbar, Allahu Akhbar!"

This event is reminiscent of the terror attacks last July in Nice, France, and more recently at a Christmas mall in Berlin.

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) A security source in Kirkuk Province revealed that the Islamic State burned a family of five persons (a mother and four children) for leaving the land of caliphate, southwest of Kirkuk, Alsumaria reported on Saturday.

Members of the Islamic State burned a whole family that consisted of a mother and four children (three girls and a 9-month-old boy) in Hawija, for leaving the land of caliphate and fleeing toward Kirkuk, the source said.

The Islamic State captured the family on the road linking between al-Riyad area and Hamrin Mountains, and burned them in front of a group of civilians, who were in their way toward al-Alam area east of Salahuddin, the source added on condition of anonymity.

The members of the Islamic State tied up the mother and her children, then poured crude oil over them and set them ablaze, the source further explained.

Noteworthy, district of Hawija and the areas of Rashad, Zab, Riyad and Abbasi, southwest of Kirkuk, were captured by the Islamic State in June 10, 2014.

Lindsay Lohan has sparked speculation that she has converted to Islam after she deleted all of her Instagram posts and simply wrote: “Alaikum salam” (peace be upon you) in her bio. Reps for the actress have told the Muslim council that she is “in a period of renewal”, with the star first reading the Qu’ran in 2015.

Lindsay embraced the Muslim culture whilst helping refugees.

Muslims have warmly welcomed Lindsay to their religion, if she has converted, taking to social media to send her “peace and blessings” as they admit that they are “proud” of her decision.

Lindsay has always been very spiritual and recently admitted that she strongly related to Islam, saying at the time: “My very close friends, who have been there for me a lot, in London are Saudi and they gave me the Qu’ran and I brought it to New York because I was learning.

Lindsay was spotted with the Qu’ran.

“It opened doors for me to experience spiritually, to find another true meaning. This is who I am.” Lately, Lindsay has been spending a lot of time working with refugees in Abu Dhabi and Syria, becoming very vocal about political matters on her popular social media accounts. Lindsay has deleted all of her social media posts.

As well as removing all of her Instagram posts, Lindsay has also deleted all but one of her tweets, with the remaining message reading: “Please let us all come together and love each other.”

He explains a design of a ‘ganji’. He says that a ganji can be a “respected” ganji but if a ganji is somehow exposing the frontal and falling from the neckline in a certain way it is bound to catch some eyes. What this Imam believes is reiterated before by many politicians in their own language, he is not the only one who blames women for the clothes they choose to wear. But if it is clothes of women which gives free license to men to rape them- or in the imam’s words – gives ‘daawatein nazdara’ to men, how does he explain actions of Sunil Rastogi who was arrested on Monday for raping over 300 minors? Does he mean that girls right from their birth have to subjected to ‘rape education’.

He also said that women themselves should not like it when any portion of their body is naked as it catches the eyes of ‘havas ke shikaris’, which is a common term used in B-grade Hindi movies. He also somehow defends those ‘havas ke shikaris’ for having “young blood in them”, “bacche hai excited toh honge hi”, he says casually.

Trump rattles NATO with 'obsolete' blast

(CNN)Donald Trump's accusation that NATO is "obsolete" has led to "astonishment and agitation" within the alliance, Germany's foreign minister has said.

Speaking in Brussels before a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Frank-Walter Steinmeier suggested the alliance was rattled by the remarks by Trump.

In a joint interview with the Times of London and the German publication Bild, Trump signaled that US foreign policy in a range of areas could be turned on its head. He suggested that sanctions imposed after Russia's annexation of Crimea could be eased in return for a deal to reduce nuclear weapons, that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had pursued "catastrophic" policies on refugees, and that his son-in-law Jared Kushner could lead a Middle East peace effort.

Speaking in Berlin, Merkel shrugged off the interview, saying she would make no substantive comment before Trump was inaugurated.

NATO said it was "absolutely confident" that the US would remain "committed" to the organization

NATO alliance 'obsolete'
Trump used the interview to restate his doubts about NATO. "I said a long time ago that NATO had problems," he said in the interview.

"Number one it was obsolete, because it was designed many, many years ago.

"Number two the countries weren't paying what they're supposed to be paying," adding that this was unfair to the United States.

Steinmeier said he had spoken with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, "who is concerned that President-elect Trump regards NATO as obsolete."

He also noted Trump's position was "in contradiction" to that of James Mattis, Trump's nominee for defense secretary.

NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu pushed back against the comments. "A strong NATO is good for the United States, just as it is for Europe."

But Dmitry Peskov, the press spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, agreed with Trump's assessment of NATO, saying on Monday that "the systematic goal of this organization is confrontation."

Angela Merkel's 'catastrophic mistake'
Trump set his sights on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, calling her "by far the most important leader" in Europe while tearing into her immigration policies, labeling them "catastrophic."

"I have great respect for her, I felt she was a great leader, I think she made one very catastrophic mistake and that was taking all these illegals and taking all these people where ever they come from and nobody really knows where they come from."

Merkel, who will run for a fourth term in elections this year, has stood firm on Germany's position of accepting nearly all asylum seekers found to be legitimate refugees.

Germany took in more than one million refugees in 2015, making it the most open country in Europe to asylum seekers.

Speaking at a joint press conference with New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English on Monday, Merkel said she would not comment before Trump's inauguration.

"We have known what his position is for some time, and my position is also known," she said.

'Extreme vetting' of immigrants

Trump said he will immediately take action to tighten US immigration restrictions once he's sworn in.
"This country we're going to go very strong borders. From the day I get in. One of the first orders I'm going to sign. Day one."

Trump reiterated plans to implement what he calls "extreme vetting" of people from the Muslim world, according to a Bild transcript translated into English by CNN.

"There will be extreme security vetting, it won't be like it is now. We don't have any proper security controls for people entering our country, they don't really exist at the moment, like it has been the case in your country at least in the past."

When asked if he would impose similar restrictions on Europe, the President-elect was noncommittal, according to Bild.

"That could happen. But we will see," he said.

Man who told Muslim convert to ‘go eat bacon’ admits racism charges in court

A man who told a Muslim convert to ‘eat bacon’ has admitted a racially and religiously offensive offence in court.

Dean McAndrew, 28, who appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court, sent a Facebook message to his stepfather Christopher McAndrew, which read: ‘Go and eat some bacon’.

McAndrew, from Westport area of Arbroath, is converting to Islam and is in the process of changing his name, the court heard.

His stepson Dean of Dundee, admitted using a public communications network to send grossly offensive or indecent, obscene or menacing messages with racially and religiously offensive content on December 6, and threatened him with violence.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said: ‘Mr McAndrew is in the process of converting his religion to Islam. He has completed paperwork to change his name.

‘The accused does not use Facebook but uses Messenger as a means of communicating with his family.

‘In recent weeks the accused has had difficulties… and witness McAndrew was giving him advice on Monday December 5.

‘At 6.49pm on December 6 he messaged witness McAndrew “go and eat some bacon”.’

Ms Drummond also said McAndrew described the man as ‘black’ and used an obscenity.

Before hearing the full list of messages, Sheriff Gregor Murray interjected and said he would require reports before sentencing.

Sheriff Murray told him: ‘I’m going to defer sentence on you for a report from the criminal justice social work department.

‘You will have to co-operate with them in its preparation. I hear you’re a first offender but that does not stop me from thinking this is serious, from the charge and what I’ve just heard.’

McAndrew was granted bail on the special condition that he does not approach or attempt to approach his stepfather.

Dean McAndrew will be sentenced at a later hearing on 9 February.

Paris attacks terrorist Salah Abdeslam said he feels no remorse for the gruesome killings

It is the first time the depraved jihadi, believed to be the sole surviving member of the cell that killed 130 people in the November 2015 terror attacks, has spoken since his arrest last March.

The letter, which was destined for an unknown address Côte-d'Or, in northeast France, was handed over to counter-terror officials on October 11 - some 24 hours before the reclusive jihadist's lawyers announced that they would "no longer defend him".

Abdeslam has repeatedly exercised his right to remain silent and refused to talk during questioning.

In the letter, the failed suicide bomber - who is being held in isolation and who is said to have become even more radicalised in prison - opened up about his warped religious beliefs, according to the French daily Libération.

He wrote: "I do not know where to start. I would not be able to tell you whether your letters bring me joy or pain. But what I do know is that they are my only link to the outside world.

"I am not afraid to speak out, because I am not ashamed of myself. People say horrible things about me, everything has already been said.

"I want us to be honest with one another. Are your intentions sincere? I don't want you to love me because you think I'm a 'pop star'. The only person who deserves to be worshipped is Allah, the creator of the world."

The letter also appears to confirm fears that Abdeslam has retreated further into his shell and harbours increasingly radical thoughts.

He wrote: "I am not trying to cause chaos. I want to shake up the status quo. I am a Muslim, and I am submitted to Allah. Are you submitted? Hurry up, repent and submit to him, for he will guide you to the right path. Do not listen to what people say, listen to him."

Terrorist Abdeslam is said to receive 'a lot of fan mail'

An anonymous source close to the case said Abdeslam receives "a lot of fan mail".

He said: "Catholics write to ask him religion-oriented questions. Some women pledge their undying love to him, and say they want to have his babies. Lawyers offer to defend him - the letters keep pouring in."

MIGRANT youth gangs have turned Sweden’s largest shopping centre into a “no-go zone” as they intimidate police, harass girls and deal drugs openly.

Gothenburg police have been forced implement extraordinary measures to cope with the increased number of incidents, which have left shoppers and business owners terrified of their workplace.

Nordstan is Sweden’s largest shopping centre in terms of sales and number of visitors, however once the shops close at 8pm, criminal youth gangs take over despite officers turning out in force.

Jonas Bergqvist, one of the team managers of the city police, told Expressen: “We have seen an increase since last autumn, with mostly unaccompanied minors who are staying here in North Town.

“In the evening they deal drugs and violence between fractions sometimes occur. If there are conflicts from their home countries, they bring them here.”

Swedish police have been hard pressed to cope with the criminal youth gangs

While his colleague Rikard Sorensen added the thugs was experiencing increasing levels of increasingly more aggressive toward police.

He said: “There is a lot of drugs circulating. I wouldn’t even let my son go down to North Town.

“There is a risk of robbery, but also harassment of girls.”

The shopping centre has become a central hub for youngsters to meet and despite Swedish teenagers also engaging in some of the incidents, the officials argued lone migrants from Afghanistan and Syria, in addition to Moroccan street children, were behind the drastic increase.

Just days after the busy centre was forced to close early on New Year’s Eve as thugs threatened to set off fireworks inside the building, around 150 teenagers also surrounded and threatened police officers, Mr Bergqvist said.

“There was an incident at Nordstadstorget and some policemen were surrounded by a large number of young people and they experienced the situation as threatening and called for reinforcements,” he revealed.

Other incidents at the shopping centre, which is located in south-west Sweden, include a teenager being robbed while a broken glass bottle was held to his throat, and a shopkeeper being threatened after he tried to stop thugs from stealing.

Mr Sorensen condemned the situation as he made a clear dig at the liberal country’s immigration policy, as many for the foreign youths wreaking havoc lacked identification papers.

Explaining the lack of documentation forced them to hand the detained vandals over to social services because they could not prove they were adults, the officer said it lead to the crooks being back on the streets within a short period of time.

“I've had people in front of me that look like they are 35, but who claim to be 15. I can’t prove they’re lying so we have to release them,” Mr Sorensen said.

The admission that Nordstan has become a lawless hotspot comes as Swedish police last year issued a report where it detailed incidents from more than 55 areas which it branded as “no-go zones”.

It detailed brutal attacks on police, sexual assaults, children carrying weapons and general turmoil sweeping across the country.

Malmo, Sweden’s third-largest city, has been embroiled in chaos as arsonists have torched cars across the city and on New Year’s Eve it was branded a “war zone” as police admitted they did not have control.

A Nevada woman dies of a superbug resistant to every available antibiotic in the US

A pan-resistant form of Klebsiella pneumoniae killed a 70-year-old woman in Nevada in September.

If it sometimes seems like the idea of antibiotic resistance, though unsettling, is more theoretical than real, please read on.

Public health officials from Nevada are reporting on a case of a woman who died in Reno in September from an incurable infection. Testing showed the superbug that had spread throughout her system could fend off 26 different antibiotics.

“It was tested against everything that’s available in the United States … and was not effective,” said Dr. Alexander Kallen, a medical officer in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s division of health care quality promotion.

Although this isn’t the first time someone in the US has been infected with pan-resistant bacteria, at this point, it is not common. It is, however, alarming.

“I think this is the harbinger of future badness to come,” said Dr. James Johnson, a professor of infectious diseases medicine at the University of Minnesota and a specialist at the Minnesota VA Medical Center.

Other scientists are saying this case is yet another sign that researchers and governments need to take antibiotic resistance seriously. It was reported Thursday in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a journal published by the CDC.

The authors of the report note this case underscores the need for hospitals to ask incoming patients about foreign travel and also about whether they had recently been hospitalized elsewhere.

The case involved a woman who had spent considerable time in India, where multi-drug-resistant bacteria are more common than they are in the US. She had broken her right femur — the big bone in the thigh — while in India a couple of years back. She later developed a bone infection in her femur and her hip and was hospitalized a number of times in India in the two years that followed. Her last admission to a hospital in India was in June of last year.

The unnamed woman — described as a resident of Washoe County who was in her 70s — went into hospital in Reno for care in mid-August, where it was discovered she was infected with what is called a CRE — carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae. That’s a general name to describe bacteria that commonly live in the gut that have developed resistance to the class of antibiotics called carbapenems — an important last-line of defense used when other antibiotics fail. CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden has called CREs “nightmare bacteria” because of the danger they pose for spreading antibiotic resistance.

In the woman’s case, the specific bacteria attacking her was called Klebsiella pneumoniae, a bug that often causes of urinary tract infections.

Testing at the hospital showed resistance to 14 drugs — all the drug options the hospital had, said Lei Chen, a senior epidemiologist with Washoe County Health District and an author of the report. “It was my first time to see a [resistance] pattern in our area,” she said.

A sample was sent to the CDC in Atlanta for further testing, which revealed that nothing available to US doctors would have cured this infection. Kallen admitted people in this field experience a sinking feeling when they’re faced with a superbug like this one.

“I think it’s concerning. We have relied for so long on just newer and newer antibiotics. But obviously the bugs can often [develop resistance] faster than we can make new ones,” he said.

Doctors and scientists who track the spread of antibiotic resistance — the rapidly proliferating swarm superbugs — see this case as a big red flag.

“If we’re waiting for some sort of major signal that we need to attack this internationally, we need an aggressive program, both domestically and internationally to attack this problem, here’s one more signal that we need to do that,” said Lance Price, who heads the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center at George Washington University.

There is international recognition of the threat, which an expert report published last year warned could kill 10 million a year by 2050 if left unchecked. In September, the UN General Assembly held a high-level meeting on antibiotic resistance, only the fourth time the body had addressed a health issue.

The woman in Nevada was cared for in isolation; the staff who treated her used infection control precautions to prevent spread of the superbug in the hospital. Chen and Randall Todd, a health department colleague, told STAT testing was done to look for additional infections, but so far none have been detected.

Johnson said it’s likely, though, that other people in the US are carrying similar bacteria in their guts and could become sick at some point. “It’s possible that this is the only person in the US and she had the bad luck to go to India, pick up the bad bug, come back and here it is, we found her and now that she’s dead, it’s gone from the US. That is highly improbable,” he said.

“People have asked me many times ‘How scared should we be?’ … ‘How close are we to the edge of the cliff?’ And I tell them: We’re already falling off the cliff,” Johnson said. “It’s happening. It’s just happening — so far — on a relatively small scale and mostly far away from us. People that we don’t see … so it doesn’t have the same emotional impact.’’

The party’s vice-president says religious schools have the tendency to produce people with a more extremist interpretation of Islam.

(FMT) – Gerakan has urged the government to review the policies of government-funded religious schools.

According to Gerakan vice-president Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, it is religious schools and not vernacular schools that are likely to threaten unity in the country.

He based this claim on the government’s own education blueprint which stated that government-funded religious schools only had Bumiputera students.

“At least in Chinese schools, we have a 12% non-Chinese student base,” he said at a press conference at the Gerakan headquarters here today.

He also claimed religious schools had the tendency to produce people with a more extremist interpretation of Islam.

“Through our own analysis, we have found that while not all the students ended up having extremist views, there is a tendency to produce some with this kind of thinking.”

He stressed he was not calling for the abolition of religious schools.

“We need to go back to how the country was originally envisioned to be — a secular country where politics and religion are kept separate.

“The reason we have problems like the unilateral conversion of children in this country is because we’ve moved away from this vision of a secular country.”

Vegan denied Swiss citizenship by neighbours annoyed at her animal campaigns

A woman in Switzerland has been refused citizenship, and therefore a passport, because her "annoying" vegan campaigning has rubbed her neighbours up the wrong way.

Nancy Holten, 42, is a vegan and an animal rights activist who was born in the Netherlands, but has lived in Switzerland since she was eight. She is fluent in Swiss German and her children are Swiss citizens.

Ms Holten has twice tried - and failed - to get a Swiss passport, because other residents in the community of Gipf-Oberfrick, in the canton of Aargau, don't like her outspokenness on animal rights issues.

In Switzerland, locals often get a say in citizenship applications, and Holten's neighbours have given her a thumbs down, Swiss news website The Local reported.

Her opposition to local traditions - such as hunting, piglet racing and cows wearing bells - and her complaints about the village church bells, have led locals to brand her "annoying".

In 2015, her first attempt at naturalisation was approved by authorities, but 144 out of 206 village residents rejected it.

Her second effort was rejected in November.

However, Ms Holten has appealed to the provincial government, which could overturn the locals' vote.

"Many people think that I am attacking their traditions. But that was not what it was about ... What primarily motivated me about the cowbells was the animals' welfare," she told The Local.

Residents said Ms Holten's causes weren't the issue - it was just that she'd been so vocal about them, making regular comments to the media.

Local political figure Tanja Suter said Ms Holten had a "big mouth" and residents would not support her citizenship "if she annoys us and doesn't respect our traditions".

A spokesman for the local government, Urs Treier, suggested Ms Holten was not wanted in the community.

"The reason why they have yet again clearly rejected the naturalisation is that Nancy Holten very often expresses her personal opinion in the media, and also gathers media coverage for rebelling against traditional [Swiss] things within the village.

"It can cause the community to not want such a person in their midst."

However, Ms Holten said she would not give up campaigning.

"The law states that freedom of expression must not have any negative consequences," she told The Local.

"I am still committed to what is important to me. Especially for the animals. Their wellbeing is important to me. If I stop doing it ... I am not being genuine and honest. So I will not stop just for the sake of the Swiss passport."

Birmingham tree to be cut down and replaced with concrete barriers to protect city from Berlin-style attack

One of the oldest trees in Birmingham is to be cut down so council bosses can replace it with concrete barriers to protect the city from a Berlin-style terror attack.

The tree, in Centenary Square and thought to be 140 years old, faces the chop so concrete benches can be built in a bid to beef up security in the city centre.

The decision is part of a £10 million revamp of the square, which will see heavy stone benches with deep foundations installed to deter terrorists from ploughing trucks into crowds.

The London Plane tree, which has been there since the 1930s, is one of 25 tress to be removed in the coming weeks.

Originally it had been thought the tree was being cut down to allow for a Metro tram extension, but Birmingham City Council deputy leader, Ian Ward, has since confirmed it is to prevent terrorism.

Councillor Ward said: "These benches will be barriers and require deep foundations which mean the tree's roots will be cut.

"We wanted to move the benches forward, but the square is used for big events like the Remembrance Parade and ice rink so we needed the space."

Campaigners, including members of the Birmingham Trees for Life group, had called for the tree to be preserved and said that both the Metro and Centenary Square revamp could be planned around it.

More than 1,300 people have signed an online petition to save it.

Although 25 trees are being cut down, the councillor insisted 59 replacement trees will be planted.

He added: "It will be more than enough to compensate."

Last month, concrete bollards were installed at the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham to protect shoppers.

In December, 12 people were killed after a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin, Germany.

Last July, 434 people were injured and 86 people killed after a truck drove into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

Afghan refugees who swindled £87,000 in benefits by pretending to be CHILD MIGRANTS jailed

A GROUP of Afghan refugees pretended to be children to pocket a staggering £87,000 in benefits.

The three migrants were jailed for five to six months for supplying false information to Austrian authorities after lying about their age.

The three men cheated the state out of more than €100,000, benefitting from health insurance, support, basic care, pocket money and German language courses.

The case against the three was brought after a court ordered medical reports which revealed that the men were older than stated on documents supplied during their asylum application.

Two of the accused denied the accusation of having unlawfully obtained the social benefits, claiming their parents were to blame as they wrote down the dates of birth according to the Afghan calendar (the Solar Hijri calendar).

This calendar, used only in Iran and Afghanistan, has six months of 31 days, then five months with 30 days each and finally one with 29 days, except in leap years where it has 30.

The pair said they did not know their own birth dates.

A lawyer for one of the two men said his mother was illiterate and could have easily made a mistake when giving his date of birth.

The third man admitted in court that he had lied about his age.

He said: "People said it was better to apply as a minor as then I cannot be deported back. I was afraid that I would then be killed in Afghanistan like my father was."

The judge did not believe that the first and second defendant were unaware of their real ages.

She said: "They knowingly gave false information so they could stay in Austria."

The three young men have been sentenced to five and six months in prison.

In the first 10 months of 2016, 16,054 minors, of which 4,076 were unaccompanied, applied for asylum in Austria.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs and Asylum has commissioned an age diagnosis report in 2,672 cases so far in those 10 months.

In September last year, five Afghan refugees were detained in Austria by authorities over accusations they sexually harassed at least eight women during a wine festival in the city of Wels.

MOROCCO 'bans the burka' over fears that the Islamic garment is used to help carry out crimes, say local media

-Full-face Muslim veils will be banned for security reasons, local media has said

-While there is no official statement, there will be a ban on production and sale
-It will only apply to the niqab - a garment which covers everything but the eyes

Morocco has banned the production and sale of burqa full-face Muslim veils for security reasons, media reports said Tuesday.

While there was no official announcement by authorities in the North African nation, the reports said the interior ministry order would take effect this week.

The ban has been imposed due to reports felons have been using the garment to help carry out their crimes.

'We have taken the step of completely banning the import, manufacture and marketing of this garment in all the cities and towns of the kingdom,' the Le360 news site quoted a high-ranking interior ministry official as saying.

It said the measure appeared to be motivated by security concerns, 'since bandits have repeatedly used this garment to perpetrate their crimes.'

Most women in Morocco, whose King Mohammed VI favours a moderate version of Islam, prefer the hijab headscarf that does not cover the face.

The niqab, which leaves the area around the eyes uncovered, is also worn in Salafist circles and in more conservative regions in the north, from where thousands of jihadists have gone to fight in Syria and Iraq.
In some commercial districts of Casablanca, the country's economic capital, interior ministry officials on Monday conducted 'awareness-raising campaigns with traders to inform them of this new decision,' the Media 24 website said.

In Taroudant in southern Morocco, authorities ordered traders to stop making and selling burqas and to liquidate their stock within 48 hours, the reports said.

Retailers in the northern town of Ouislane were said to have received similar instructions.

It was unclear if Morocco plans to follow in the footsteps of some European countries such as France and Belgium where it is illegal to wear full veils in public.

The reports were met with a muted response in the absence of official confirmation, though Salafists expressed concern that the measure could be expanded to include the niqab.

'Is Morocco moving towards banning the niqab that Muslim women have worn for five centuries?' Salafist sheikh Hassan Kettani wrote on Facebook.
'If true it would be a disaster,' he added.

Hammad Kabbaj, a preacher who was barred from standing in parliamentary elections in October over his alleged ties to 'extremism', denounced the ban as 'unacceptable'.

In comments on Facebook, he mocked the 'Morocco of freedom and human rights' which 'considers the wearing of the Western swimsuit on the beaches an untouchable right'.

But lawmaker Nouzha Skalli, a former family and social development minister, welcomed the ban as 'an important step in the fight against religious extremism'.

The High Council of Oulemas, the country's top religious authority, has yet to comment on the issue of banning full-face veils.
