Timeline of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, 2021

SOS:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_t..._conflict,_2021

Articles can be found inside WIKI with links as usual.

May 5
Yehuda Guetta, 19, Israeli student who was shot in the head in a drive-by shooting attack at Tapuah Junction in the West Bank earlier this week has died of his injuries, the hospital treating him announced this night.[1]

May 6
The rising tensions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in recent weeks are confirmed. Saeed Yusuf Muhammad Oudeh, 16, Palestinian teenager[2] was killed in clashes with the Israel Defense Forces and a woman was killed while trying to carry out a suspected stabbing attack on Israeli troops.[3]

May 10
Hundreds of people have been wounded in renewed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at Jerusalem's Temple Mount compound. The clashes were prompted by thousands of Palestinians gathering overnight at the flashpoint Jerusalem holy site ahead of Jerusalem Day, collecting numerous rocks and other makeshift weapons, upon which police barred Jewish entry to the site. The Palestinians then started rioting and hurling rocks, causing police to enter the compound. Israel's military liaison to the Palestinians, Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian, attempts to ease the rising tensions in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, telling Palestinians that Israel is “dedicated to allowing freedom of worship in Jerusalem to all religions,” as Muslim rioters clash with police on the Temple Mount. Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesperson for the Hamas terror group, comments on the clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian rioters in Jerusalem's Temple Mount, calling them “a real massacre and war crime.”

Palestinian rioters throwing rocks and other objects at a Jewish man's car outside the Old City and trying to drag him and a passenger out of it before the driver speeds into one of them. A police officer who was nearby ran to the scene and protected the driver and a passenger, who were mildly injured, as rioters attempted to attack them. The driver and passenger have been taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah Mount Scopus medical center for treatment.

Over 278 Palestinians have been wounded since clashes with Israeli police during the morning. Israel Police say at least 12 cops were injured. In addition, Israeli civilians including a seven-month-old baby have been wounded from rocks pelted at cars near the Old City. A total of 305 Palestinians have been wounded during the clashes, 7 in serious condition.

The Israel Defense Forces send reinforcements to the Gaza Division out of concern for an escalation of violence. The escalation started during the evening and night, with hundreds of rocket fired and mortar fired. The Israel Defense Forces said some 200 rockets were fired toward Israel from the Gaza Strip during the night, dozens of which have been intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. The Israel Defense Forces has conducted retaliatory strikes on roughly 130 targets in the Strip, including the home of a top Hamas commander, Hamas's intelligence headquarters, two attack tunnels that came near the security barrier and rocket production and storage sites.[4]

May 11
Widespread protests and riots intensified across Israel, particularly in cities with a large Arab population. the Mayor of Lod Yair Revivio urged Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu to deploy Israel Border Police units to help quell the violence that saw the burning of three synagogues and dozens of cars in the city, saying that the city had "completely lost control" and describing it as "near civil war".[5] Netanyahu declared a state of emergency in Lod, marking the first time since 1966 that Israel had used emergency powers over an Arab community.[6][7] Minister of Public Security Amir Ohana has implemented the emergency orders.[7]

At least two people were in serious condition from the clashes, one from rocks. In Acco, another mixed Arab-Jewish city in northern Israel, an 84-year-old man was seriously hurt when a restaurant was set on fire by rioters. Some 25 residents of Ramla and Lod were arrested at night, according to a police spokesperson, and 151 were arrested in total within the central-northern district of Israel.[8][9]

May 12
Over 850 rockets crossed into Israeli territory after being launched from Gaza, and another 200 fell inside the Hamas-run coastal enclave. Several rockets have made direct hits on buildings and cars in Israel, killing five Israelis. Two of those killed were Khalil Awad, 52, and his daughter Nadin, 16, Arab-Israeli residents of a town near Lod, who were killed after a rocket scored a direct hit on a car in Lod early morning.

An anti-tank guided missile fired from the northern Gaza Strip toward a target inside Israel near the community of Netiv Ha’asara, just north of the enclave. Two people are critically injured and a third is seriously wounded in the attack, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service. The missile struck a jeep on the border. According to the Times of Israel, Hamas has assumed responsibility for the attack.[10][11][12] The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that a soldier from the Nahal Infantry Brigade, Staff Sgt. Omer Tabib, 21, was killed in this attack. The Israel Defense Forces announced that all schools are to be closed in central and southern Israel for the rest of the week.

May 13
The victims of the Hamas rocket attacks confirmed are Leah Yom Tov, 63; Khalil Awad, 52, and his daughter Nadin, 16; Soumya Santosh, 30; Nella Gurevitz, in her 80s; Omer Tabib, 21; and Ido Abigail, 5.
#TaiwanCanHelp

Taiwan to spend US$35 billion fighting coronavirus, to donate 10 million masks

https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia...0-million-masks

TAIPEI (REUTERS) - Taiwan dramatically upped its estimate for how much it would spend helping the economy deal with the impact of the coronavirus to US$35 billion (S$49.9 billion) on Wednesday (April 1), and said it would donate 10 million face masks to the most needy countries.

Taiwan has reported 322 cases of the virus, including five deaths, winning plaudits for its early and so far effective measures to control the virus, especially compared to many of its neighbours. But, the export-reliant island's economy has wilted in the face of the pandemic's spread.

The government is already rolling out a stimulus package, and President Tsai Ing-wen said in total they would be spending NT$1.05 trillion (S$49 billion) including a second round of measures.

"We expect the scale of these two stimulus steps will in total reach NT$1.05 trillion," Ms Tsai said from the presidential office.

The central bank last month cut its full-year economic growth outlook to 1.92 per cent from 2.57 per cent forecast in December.

But the virus fight has also taken on a diplomatic dimension for Taiwan, largely locked out of the international community due to pressure from China which considers the entirely separately ruled island its own territory with no right to any of the trappings of a state.

Taiwan has repeatedly offered to share its knowledge and experience with the world as part of its "Taiwan can help" campaign, and Ms Tsai said this now would entail tangible actions including the donation of masks.

"Over the past months, we have seen countless acts of bravery and sacrifice from medical workers around the world. It is our duty as global citizens to give them our full support," she said, speaking in English.

"We need to step up cooperation, and that means sharing experiences and materials, and working together to develop treatments and vaccines," she added.

"Going forward, we will donate surplus masks and other supplies to our allies and countries hit hardest by Covid-19. These supplies will go to medical workers on the front lines who are working around the clock to save lives."

Taiwan has already agreed to work with the United States on vaccine development and other virus prevention work, though Taipei has expressed anger at the World Health Organisation (WHO) for excluding it, also due to Chinese pressure.

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, speaking at the same news conference, said the masks would go to the US, hard-hit European countries and the small band of countries which maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

"Taiwan can help, and Taiwan is helping," he said

Foreign worker charged with raping university student near Kranji War Memorial

https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/foreign-w...ar-memorial?amp

SINGAPORE - A foreign worker will appear in court next month to face an aggravated rape charge after a female university student was attacked and raped in Kranji.

Indian national Chinnaiah Karthik, 21, allegedly approached the 23-year-old student along Turf Club Avenue at around 1.30am on May 4, Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported.

The student reportedly attempted to defend herself but was overpowered by the man, who retaliated by attacking her.

He then dragged her into a nearby forested area between the Singapore Turf Club and Kranji War Memorial, where he raped her, according to the report and court documents.

It is not clear whether the student was jogging or walking home at the time of the incident, or whether the attack was premeditated.

Following police investigations, Chinnaiah was identified through surveillance footage recorded in the area, including from a camera attached to a nearby lamp post.

He was arrested the next day near his dormitory during a police ambush, according to Lianhe Wanbao, which added that Chinnaiah is currently being remanded, and investigations are ongoing.

Chinnaiah was charged in court on May 7 and his case is expected to be heard on June 3 in the High Court.

If convicted of the serious sexual offence, he could face a jail sentence of between eight and 20 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Courtesy of the strait times

Singapore's hawker culture Unesco bid

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/youn...ture-unesco-bid

SINGAPORE - As Singapore prepares to nominate its hawker culture for inscription into Unesco's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, some young Singaporeans have stepped up to lend their support to the bid.

One of them is Miss Poh Huan Rong, 19, a third-year business and social enterprise student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

She was in Shanghai for six months on an internship last March and while there, found herself craving her favourite char kway teow.

After three months, she finally found a restaurant serving the dish - but it was too salty and the noodles "didn't taste right".

She said: "I even tried cooking it myself, but they don't sell the right kind of noodles or sauce there. Only when I came back to Singapore could I have a proper plate of char kway teow."

The restaurant environment was also a far cry from the casual familiarity of the Clementi hawker centre where she often had supper with friends after their co-curricular activities, she said.

This experience made her realise the importance of not taking Singapore's hawker culture for granted.

When she returned, she signed up as a volunteer for the Our SG Hawker Culture travelling exhibition to showcase hawker culture and encourage members of the public to pledge their support for the nomination.

Since its launch in October last year, the exhibition has garnered more than 220,000 pledges online and at various venues around the island.

Passers-by can also hit a button at the exhibition to signal their support without penning a full pledge.

On Sunday morning (Jan 13), Miss Poh was at Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre in Jurong East, where the exhibition is currently being held until Monday, along with first-year culinary and catering management students Keisia Lim-Urquhart and Vivian Zhu from Temasek Polytechnic.

They had breakfast and chatted with Culture, Community and Youth Minister Grace Fu, who was there to pen her own support.

Ms Fu wrote that she supports the nomination because hawker culture "is an important part of our lives".

Miss Lim-Urquhart, 17, and Miss Zhu, 18, both researched hawker food as part of a project on local breakfast food.

Miss Lim-Urquhart said she chose to study mee siam, as it is a part of her Nonya heritage. Her mother is part Peranakan and her father is a Scottish Canadian.

She said: "The many variations of dishes like mee siam show the diversity in Singapore. Malay hawkers don't add coconut milk to the gravy. And with nasi lemak, Chinese hawkers introduced luncheon meat."

Miss Zhu said she learnt from one hawker how nasi lemak was created by Malay settlers living by the sea who made use of coconut as an ingredient because it was abundant.

She said: "With better understanding, you also learn to appreciate it more. Hawker food is more expensive now, but is still affordable.

"Paying more is a way to keep the culture sustainable because rentals and ingredients are also more expensive."

The Our SG Hawker Culture exhibitions will continue to collect pledges from the public until March, when the nomination will be submitted to Unesco.

The exhibition will move on to Toa Payoh Hub Atrium and Velocity Mall from Tuesday to Jan 20.

Details about upcoming locations can be found on the Our SG Heritage website.

Nobody is paid to play or coach football in Iceland. It’s a completely amateur game. The manager in on the touchlines is Heimir Hallgrímsson. During the week he’s a dentist and he had to ask for time off work to go to Russia. #ARGISL #WC18

twitter

And the goalkeeper who deny Messi his glory is a part time film director

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannes_Þór_Halldórsson

China’s Xi Jinping urges dialogue,

China’s Xi Jinping urges dialogue, not confrontation, at Boao Forum after Trump seeks tariff

http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia...s-at-boao-forum

BOAO, CHINA (NYTIMES) - President Xi Jinping on Tuesday (April 10) portrayed China as committed to opening its economy as he presented an alternative vision to President Donald Trump’s calls for tariffs and restricting trade with China, urging “dialogue rather than confrontation”.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the beginning of an escalating trade dispute between his country and the United States, Mr Xi implicitly took aim at the Trump administration.

“The Cold War mentality and zero-sum game are increasingly obsolete,” Mr Xi said. “Only by adhering to peaceful development and working together can we truly achieve win-win results.”

Mr Xi also pledged to rebuff efforts to impose barriers to world trade, saying that “China’s door of opening up will not be closed and will only open up even wider”.

Mr Xi highlighted areas where China was willing to give, including pledging to ease restrictions on imported cars by the end of the year as well as repeating open-ended promises to give foreigners greater access to the country’s financial markets – promises officials have made in past.

He also pledged to strengthen intellectual property rights, addressing one of Mr Trump’s main complaints.

His comments struck a tonal contrast with the more combative language coming from Mr Trump and his administration.

“We should respect each other’s core interest and major concerns and follow a new approach to state-to-state relations, featuring dialogue rather than confrontation,” he said. “We live in a time with an overwhelming trend toward openness and connectivity.”

The speech, delivered at the Boao Forum for Asia in China’s southern island province of Hainan, was the latest effort by China to position itself as an advocate of free trade and reliable growth.

That pitch runs counter to long-standing accusations that China violates trade rules and intellectual property rights.

It also comes as Mr Xi tightens his grip over his country’s political, social and economic life.

Indeed, some were sceptical that China would follow through on its pledges of openness.

“People will say about the Boao speech: ‘Show me.’ We heard this in Davos last year,” Mr Joerg Wuttke, former president of the European Chamber of Commerce in Beijing, said in referring to Mr Xi’s 2017 speech at the World Economic Forum.

But in a time when the United States’ policies have threatened to upset the stability of the world order, China’s growing confidence and its verbal support of global trade rules offers other countries a potentially appealing alternative to Mr Trump’s rhetoric.

Mr Xi’s speech came just days after the US and China exchanged tit-for-tat tariff threats that have ignited worries of a global trade war.

Trump administration officials have accused China of forcing foreign companies doing business there to give up trade secrets as part of Beijing’s effort to re-tool the Chinese economy and create companies that can compete with US rivals.

On trade, China has tried to project a balanced tone. It retaliated quickly last week after the US detailed proposed tariffs it wanted to levy on about US$50 billion (S$65.55 billion) in Chinese-made goods, saying it would match Washington’s efforts dollar-for-dollar.

At the same time, Chinese officials have said they want to avoid a trade war and negotiate.

On Tuesday, Mr Xi appeared to have given Mr Trump a concession by pledging to “significantly” lower tariffs on imported automobiles by the end of the year.

Just hours before, Mr Trump had taken to Twitter to complain about China’s 25 per cent tax on imported automobiles.

But Mr Xi’s pledges to open China’s banking, auto and manufacturing sectors are not entirely new.

Last November, China said it would ease and eventually remove limits on foreign ownership of banks and other financial firms, but financial firms have not received details about when and how that will happen.

Even as trade disputes cast a shadow over the world’s two biggest economies, Chinese officials see the increasingly strident tone from Washington as an opportunity.

Since Mr Trump was elected in 2016 and pursued an America First policy that has alienated some allies, Mr Xi and other Chinese leaders have tried to fill the void left by America’s declining presence on the world stage.

Mr Xi travelled to Davos for the first time last year to call for global leadership on climate on the eve of the inauguration of Mr Trump, who has publicly questioned the science behind climate change.

Chinese officials were also front and centre at the most recent Davos gathering, in January, where they cited China’s progress and called for more international cooperation on several fronts.

That call for unity could also help calm some uneasiness resulting from Mr Xi’s recent power grab.

Last month, China formally ended term limits for its top leader, which could make Mr Xi the country’s chief for life. That move has caused jitters among some in the United States and other countries.

At Boao, Chinese officials have promoted Mr Xi’s leadership as providing an opening to carry out ambitious plans to overhaul the country’s economy and make it more open.

On trade, government leaders and Chinese corporate chiefs have sought to strike a delicate balance: playing down worries about the effect on China of a protracted trade fight, while warning that the global economic system could be disrupted by a trade war and that the US risks falling behind.

“If a trade conflict becomes a trade war, the US is more likely to be hurt worse by this than China,” Mr Dai Xianglong, a former governor of the People’s Bank of China, said on Monday at the opening of the forum.

Other countries could be hit as well, said Mr Fan Gang, director of China’s National Economic Research Institute.

China is just a piece of a complicated regional supply chain across Asia, he said, citing the example of the Apple iPhone.

Any retaliation from the United States would have a ripple effect from South Korea to Malaysia (TS PROUD Msia mentioned), Japan and Taiwan.

“There is definitely a big uncertainty with this trade conflict. We started with trade friction and now conflict and possibly a war,” Mr Fan said.

“This trade war has an impact on the whole supply chain, and this is the systematic risk for China right now,” he added.

Many Chinese business executives tried to strike a similar balance in their remarks at Boao.

But some warned that the technological focus of Mr Trump’s proposed tariffs could further split the US and Chinese technology worlds – and, ultimately, stifle innovation.

“International standards come from Germany, America and Japan,” said Ms Dong Mingzhu, the chairwoman of Gree Electric Appliances, a leading Chinese manufacturer. “We in China don’t have any – but I believe we will have international standards.”

But not everyone has been as diplomatic.

On Monday evening, Mr Jack Ma, the billionaire founder of Alibaba, warned that his pledge to create 1 million jobs in the United States could be threatened by a trade dispute between China and the United States.

“If China and the US have good relations, we could create not just a million, but 10 million jobs.”

But, he added, “If they don’t have good relations, we’re going to destroy 10 million jobs.”

We import condoms from China and some men complain they are too small.”

China’s condom is world’s thinnest: court settles bragging rights

Parirenyatwa added that Zimbabwean firms should look at making condoms rather than relying on imports.

Zhao Chuan, the chief executive of the condom manufacturer Beijing Daxiang and His Friends Technology Co, told the South China Morning Post the firm was planning to make contraceptives in different sizes.

“As to the different demands from customers such as in Zimbabwe, Daxiang, as a Chinese manufacturer, has the ability and the obligation to make a contribution, so we have started to do some surveys on users’ data in the region to make preparations for future products with different sizes,” Zhao said in an email.

Zhao said that customers around the world had different requirements, with Chinese men preferring thinner condoms while not worrying about the size, while customers in North America liked a softer contraceptive.

Chinese TV show celebrating African relations causes uproar over ‘blackface and big bottoms’

Zimbabwe is one of the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa worst affected by HIV/Aids, with an estimated 13.5 per cent of its adult population infected with the virus.

The use of condoms is a key way to limit the spread of infection. The country has become one of the top five condom importers in the world, according to local media reports.

China is one of the world’s largest condoms producers, according to National Health and Family Planning Commission.

The nation has about 300 condom manufacturers producing about 3 billion of the contraceptives each year.

This article Chinese-made condoms too small, Zimbabwe’s health minister complains first appeared on South China Morning Post

🙄

There's never been a country that's lost jobs like we do, so stupidly, so easy to solve."

Mr Trump said Goodrich Lighting Systems laid off 255 workers and moved jobs to India, while Baxter Health Care Corporation laid off 199 workers and moved its jobs to Singapore. "It's getting worse and worse and worse," he said.

A Trump administration, he said, would impose a 35 per cent tax on any US company that wants to fire its workers and move to another country, and then shift its product back into the United States.

He also said he would immediately stop the "job-killing" TPP, calling it another disaster in the making.

Ts SAY:
Singapore is already seeing retrenchment happening in banking, business support n OnG sectors.

So... if Trump wins... Less support for Singapore. China no support SG bcuz SG criticise PRC of SCS issue.

SG gg?

5 things you NEED to know about Malaysia’s

5 things you NEED to know about Malaysia’s Paralympic heroes

http://www.fourthofficial.com/2016/38427/5...alympic-heroes/

QUOTE

1) Ridzuan Puzi’s long battle

It was never easy for Ridzuan Puzi. According to his father, Ridzuan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after his first birthday, which broke his parents’ hearts. They constantly worried about his future and whether he would be able to live independently, but Ridzuan’s determination, coupled with assistance from various parties, seems to have propelled him towards impeccable heights. He made his first professional appearance at the ASEAN Paralympic Games in 2011 and five years later, he is now a world champion as well as a Paralympic gold medalist. Fantastic stuff!

2) Ridzuan’s professional ‘pillar of strength’

It goes without saying that Ridzuan’s parents played an enormous part in his growth as a professional athlete, but another man responsible for constantly motivating Ridzuan to do better is Malaysian Paralympics Head Coach, R. Jeganathan. He has got tonnes of experience in athletics, having previously coached M. Ramachandran – arguably one of the finest long-distance runner Malaysia has ever produced. Jega was there when Ridzuan made his official bow at the ASEAN Para Games in 2011. He was there when Ridzuan finished 5th at the Sainsbury Anniversary Games in 2013. Last night, he was also there, to console and celebrate with an emotional Ridzuan, right after he clinched Malaysia’s first ever gold medal at the Paralympic Games.

3) The man who ‘discovered’ Ridzuan

The road is never easy for paralympic athletes, given how easy it is to trivialise their talent and potential in a world that unfortunately pays more attention towards non-Para athletes. Thankfully for Ridzuan, a man called Affizam Amdan took the extra initiative to help Ridzuan develop his talent, after spotting him in 2006. “I would like to thank everyone that has helped him, especially Am (Affizam Amdan), a voluntary coach, who first spotted my son’s potential and guided him since 2006 and he is still giving advice until today,” Ridzuan’s father, Mohd Puzi Mat Isa told Astro Awani.

4) Ziyad’s humble ‘kuey teow’ beginnings

Ziyad was absolutely incredible last night as he smashed the world record TWICE en route to winning the F20 (intellectual disability) gold medal last night. We’ve honestly run out of superlatives to describe that feat. And it’s even more amazing when you consider that Ziyad was running a kuey teow stall in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, not too long ago. “Ziyad does not like to trouble people, he is very independent and is a very good cook. Before he joined the National Sports Council, Ziyad was selling kueh teow in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman,” his dad was quoted as saying by New Straits Times. So remember folks, if life throws you a lemon, you slice it and squeeze it over a plate of char kuay teow in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. But you never stop working and you go get a Paralympic gold medal, by smashing the world record TWICE.

5) How ‘Bangsa Malaysia’ shaped the champion in Ziyad

Sports is quickly turning into our largest source of racial comfort and solace, especially under an environment where differences are being widely instigated and celebrated by bigoted sects of our society. But Ziyad’s story has a beautiful segment in it, that undoubtedly reflects the true value of what it means to be a Malaysian. “I still remember when my son was taught to read when he was in Year Five by an Indian teacher until he got number three in the class. Ziyad is surrounded by people who love him, his sporting talent was spotted and assisted by a Chinese teacher in Kelantan. Until today, the teacher still follows his development. This is what sports is all about. There is no race or religion,” his dad told NST. If anything, it’s a timely reminder of what we can produce and achieve, if we’re able to see past our differences, and embrace our identity as Malaysians.

inb4 terSLOW sangat la PANDAN!!!

#sowhatayamterproudsangat

Three Gold Medals

Two World Records

One Paralympic Games Record

Three OUTSTANDING individuals.
