How to type Degree/ Celcius (and similar )symbol?

Hi,

I am new to Lowyat forum, and am not sure if i post this question in the right place?

When working in my laptop ( Dell. model N5050) and i encounter the problem of typing in special character/ symbols such as degree ( upper corner zero) for degree Celsius/ latitude and alike. I have not been able to find the way of getting it typed out.

Those day when I worked on the Desktop keyboard, i did not have such problem as it carried a numeric pad near the right hand side.

When i made enquiry through the web page such as eHow and many other similar help pages,I got the following advise:
#####

1.Turn on the number lock function on your keyboard's number pad by pressing the "Number Lock" button. You can only enter the degree symbol by using the number pad (not the row of numbers above the letters.)
2 Click in the cell into which you wish to type the degree symbol.
3 Locate the "Alt" key on your keyboard.
4 Hold down the "Alt" key with your left hand, and type "0176" simultaneously on the number pad. You should see the degree symbol appear in your cell. ######

The problem with my Dell Laptop keyboard is that I am not able to locate such a "Number Lock", and even among the top row of (red) FN KEYS, there is none of this.

Many thanks for the anticipated helps.
