TM modem struck my lighting

Hi guys, so my TM Unifi modem got struck by lightning and is no longer working. Called them and they said it could take up to a week a more for them to come and fix it. Here are pics of my modem:

Instead of waiting for them, can I replace the modem with a similar one that's sold online like these:

When you guys are looking for a job, do you prefer to apply and send your resume directly to the company you're interested in or apply through recruiters? I personally prefer to apply directly so I know exactly which company I'll be working for. If I apply through recruiters, I won't know which company I'll be joining unless I ask them during the interview or if I got the job, am I right? Because their job listing will list out the details without mentioning the company's name. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Joining another company after signing offer letter

I'll be having an interview at company A for this contract position where work starts at the end of January 2021. If I get the job that means I'll have to sign an offer letter, right? That means there's going to be a few weeks/days before I start work. What if I later get a better offer from company B (I'm still waiting for an interview invitation, if it ever happens) before I start work for company A? Can I just tell company A that I got a better offer and nullify (is that the correct word?) the offer letter? Do I have to pay some sort of compensation even if I haven't started work yet? I would prefer to work for company B even if the salary is lower than what company A is offering.

Do we still shake hands before/after interview...

So I was wondering now with Covid19 around, do you still shake hands before and after the interview? Since we're supposed to maintain social distance and limit contact I suppose it's more appropriate to not shake hands? I don't want to offer my hand first and be seen like I don't know we're supposed to limit contact but at the same time I don't want to be seen as unprofessional if I didn't.
Anyone who has been to interviews recently can share your experience? Are you also requested to take off the mask during the interview?

Unable to install/uninstall programs

Windows cant start 'cos a file missing or corrupt

Hi all,

I have this problem where sometimes when I start my netebook, I get an error that says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt". Below is a screen shot of the error.

I'm not sure which setup cd rom is it referring to but I was only given one CD when I purchased the netbook. Below is a screen shot of the CD. Since I'm using a netbook, i have to use an external CD rom to use the CD. I tried that but nothing seems to happen. Do I have to press a certain key for it to read the CD from the external CD rom when I start up? Or maybe its the wrong CD?

After switching my netbook on and off for a few times, the error dissapears and I'm able to load Windows normally again but I get those pop up error that says Windows has recovered from a serious error and stuff.
I'll get the same "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt" error the next time I switch on my netbook again. How do I fix this?

Laggy video and cracking audio on netbook

I've been using my Asus Eee PC netbook for about three years and lately it seems to be having some problems. The loading during startup takes quite some time and the videos also seems to lag and seems jerky when I play it. Copying files from my netbook to an external hard disk is also extremely slow now. This seems like a hard disk problem, right? But the audio also seems to have cracking noises when I play video or music so I'm not sure if it could also be a hardware problem.
The video lagging and cracking audio happens both when I play them on my netbook and from an external drive. I'm thinking of formatting to see if that will solve the problem. What do you guys think?
I have two partitions, drive C and D. I'm thinking of formatting only drive C that has the OS and programs. Will that work? Also, if this is a hard disk problem on my netbook, shouldn't the video lagging and audio cracking only happen when I play them from my netbook and not from an external drive?
Please let me know what are the things that I can do. Thanks.

Creating a new user account in XP

I have created a second user account in XP because the first one was having problems (get an error message during start up, can't log in to Messenger, hangs when changing wallpaper, etc).
After creating the second account I noticed there some programs that were in the first account are not in the second account. Such as Google Chrome, Firefox, etc. Some stuffs in the desktop of my first account were also missing in the second account. I think this is normal?
Is there any way I can transfer all the programs and files that I've installed from the first account to the second account? Instead of re-installing them one by one all over again?

I will delete the first account once I have everything in the second account. Will I lose anything if I do that? Will some files from the first account still be stored some where? What happens to the programs that were installed in the first account but were not installed in the second account? Will they be automatically uninstalled and free up my disk space?

Cyclic redundancy check error during start up

Hi,

I noticed that during start up I will get the error message below (you may also refer to the thumbnail):

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.
DETAIL - Data error (cyclic redundancy check)".

I don't remember doing anything unusual before that. A few problems that I am encountering after seeing that error message are:

1. Unable to change my desktop wallpaper. I used to have a wallpaper but now it seems like its gone and all I see on my desktop is black. Tried to change to a different wallpaper but it always hangs after that.

2. Unable to connect to MSN Live Messenger.

3. My notebook seems to be slower than usual in detecting wireless networks.

There might be other problems which I haven't discovered yet. I tried to defrag my Drive C but that didn't work out. Anyone can help out?

Earlier this week, iOS 5 was unveiled at WWDC 2011. The latest OS was quickly made available to developers and in it there were indications of two iPad 3 models and two iPhone 5 models. The SDK references iPad3,1 and iPad3,2 as well as iPhone4,1 and iPhone4,2. Unfortunately, no new iPod touch.

AT&T and Verizon iPhone 5 release date delays iPod touch 5G?

Now if you're wondering why the iPhone models had a fourth generation reference, it makes sense if you count the 3G as first generation. As for the lack of an iPod touch, speculations suggest that since the iPhone 5 release date is now rumored to be this fall, the iPod touch will get its release date pushed further away as well. With iOS 5 referencing the two iPad 3 models (we're guessing its the WiFi and WiFi+3G model), we may not see an iPod touch anytime before the iPad 3 is released hence the lack of support for it in iOS 5. In this case, the iPad 3 is expected to only be released in 2012.

So could we only see the iPod touch 5G in 2012? We hope not but it does seem possible as Apple is highly unlikely to release the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5G simultaneously.

As for the two references to the iPhone 5, it may be for the Verizon iPhone 5 & AT&T iPhone 5.

I'd like to create a website with an image slide show on the main page.

I was thinking of a slide show like this..

The part where the images changes along with the numbers below it. I know it was done in flash but I'd like to do something similar in HTML.
Are there any websites that provides such templates for me to use so I can also modify it to make it the way I want it?

Need advice on quitting job to study

I'm 27 years old and graduated in 2004 with a degree in computer science and am currently working. For the past one and a half years I've been trying out some design works (web designing, flash animation, print-outs) and am really interested in it. I have very (and I mean VERY) basic knowledge of the programs used and most of them I learnt myself or thought by my senior (who is no longer around). Actually I've always been interested in these design/multimedia stuffs since I was still studying but always took the programming route instead just because all my friends are taking that too. Something which I kinda regret when looking back.
I'd like to work as a web designer but for me to be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to be one, I feel that I need to attend classes or/and get a diploma from a college like The One Academy. The very basic skills that I have now is just not enough to land me the job unless the company provides training.
Its a three year course and by the time I graduate I'll be like...30. Damn..isn't that way too old already?
Do you think this is a good decision? Should I continue working? Is there a course that takes shorter time to complete or a better way around this? I will also have to dig up some money to pay for the school fees if I do decide to study and thats another pain.

Want to convert RGB to CMYK in GIMP

I'm quite new to designing and am more familiar with GIMP than Photoshop. All this while I've been using GIMP to create pics and stuffs for web which is fine. Now I'll have to design stuffs to be printed on T-shirt, billboards, car stickers/wrappers, etc. I know that CMYK is more suitable to use for printing but the problem is GIMP does not seem to support CMYK. Or is there some sorta add-on that can be downloaded so it supports CMYK? Right now my plan is to create the image in GIMP in RGB and after I'm done, open the file in Photoshop and convert it to CMYK. I know the color might be different but I'm hoping its not noticeable.
I'm hoping to find a way around this rather than learning how to use Photoshop (which will take a while) just to use the CMYK mode.
