Importing Guitar from US

I have a Jackson guitar that I've owned for about 5 years now. I purchased it when I was living in the States. When I left the US 3 years ago, I gave it to my friend to hold it temporarily. But now that I've sort of settled in KL, I actually want the guitar back. I can ask my friend to ship it to me but is there anything I need to worry about in terms of shipping, customs etc. What's the best courier to ship this?

USB Drives Randomly Disconnecting

Hey guys, I'm facing an issue where my USB connections disconnects periodically. It doesn't matter if it's the front ports or back ports, 3.0 or 2.0, I get notifications that it is disconnected, and then instantly it is connected again (autoplay). This only happens for drives though, any other peripherals like mouse and keyboard function as usual.

I'm most certainly sure that it's not an OS problem because it happens on all 3 OSes that I have, Windows 10, CentOS and Yosemite.
I'm using a Asus z97-a mobo with a 600W Corsair PSU. Also, each OS is on their separate SSD.

Would really appreciate some help with this, I think if this keeps going on, will probably hurt the drives.

Hey guys, I have this build right now which I use mostly for 3D applications (Maya and Houdini). Render times are a little slow, so I would like to improve this. Not sure what part I should upgrade next. Would love to have your opinion.

Adding RAM to my laptop

Hey guys.

I have an Asus A550C.
It has an intel i3 3217u @1.8Ghz and a 720M.

Currently I have a 4GB RAM. It is quite slow right now and I am not able to run things like Photoshop smoothly. Would it make a big difference if I upgrade to 8GB RAM?

I'll also be putting in an unused SSD (Currently just have HDD) I have from another system. Would these two changes make a huge difference?

I know the CPU is very sucky, but just wanted to know if things would change alot. Thanks!

Orange light on Ethernet Port

I have a Netgear WNDR3700 router that's connected to my Modem and directly to my desktop. My PC has a Asus Z97a.
I have internet connection. However, the ethernet port used shows an orange light instead of a green light. I read that the green light = 100mbps and orange light = 10mbps.

How can I make it green? My mobo is an Asus z97A if it helps with anything.

Can't use dual monitors

I have two monitors and I'm trying to get them set up with my EVGA GTX750ti.

Both monitors are Dell monitors and only have VGA connectors.

Here's my setup from the graphic cards slots:

-> DVI port -> DVI to VGA Converter -> Monitor 1
-> HDMI port -> HDMI to DVI converter -> DVI to VGA converter -> Monitor 2

If I plug them like above, I get a black/no signal screen from both monitors.

But if I plug in either one single monitor at a time, it works.

Would appreciate some advice on how to get both monitors working at the same time.

[DIY] Building an Electronic Drumset

I'm building an electronic drumset which looks like an acoustic, and I wish to share my process with our LYN community

This is how it looks and what I have built so far.

I will be updating this post with the methods and ways that I used to create this whole set.

Reason:

1) My college has a Woodshop with all the machinery, might as well make use of this facility since I like woodwork and electronics
2) High end e-kits are too expensive, hopefully this DIY will not be too expensive
3) Currently studying in US, not worth it to ship my DTXplorer 3 from home, too expensive
4) Didn't want to take an acoustic kit and cut it into half and convert it to electronic
5) Wanted it to be more personal, artistic maa

I'll be using an Alesis DM6 Drum Module.

I'll start off with a brief video explaining what and how I'm going to do.

The costs for the items and how I obtained them will also be stated (in USD).

Building Stave Drums Shells

I used poplar wood for this. Even though it was not as strong as oak or beautiful as maple, the price of it wasn't as high as the others and the quality is quite good.

I decided to make a stave drum shell because it's easier than using plywood and bending it into a circle shape.

For measurements of the angles and the outer width of each stave, I used this online stave calculator:

For a start, I built one 12" snare shell with 12 staves.
The cutting angle for each stave was 15 degrees and was cut with a table saw.

Since I wanted the height of the shell to be 4.5", I cut the wood into 4.5" pieces.
Laid them down on a long piece of tape.

Added wood glue into each "longkang"

After adding the glue, I wrapped the whole thing together with the help of the tape that I put below it before.

I put too much glue but I guess too much is better than too less.

After the glue has dried, used a compass to create the circular shape that I was going to sand down.
Since I wanted to use 12" drum heads, I had to make sure the outer circle was 11 and 7/8 of an inch so that the heads will fit.

After that I sanded down the inside of the shell with a spindle sander. Thankfully poplar isn't as hard as oak so it was not too tiring to sand it down.

Then sanded the outer side with a belt sander.

The completed shell:

Poplar board: $6.30 (HomeDepot)
Alesis DM 6 drum module: $40 (Used, purchased from Craigslist)

Total cost so far: $46.30

Casio Keyboard not Detected by Laptop

Hi people,

I have a Casio CTK 2300 keyboard. I would like to plug in the keyboard to my laptop so I can record it directly to my laptop.
I tried connecting the keyboard following the directions from http://support.casio.com/pdf/008/Web_CTK2200_3200-E-1B.pdf (page E34)
My laptop detects that a USB has been plugged in (usb plug in sound), but nothing else happens, no drivers are installed.
I tried running Audacity and also Sonar Cakewalk but both programs will not detect the MIDI IN for the keyboard.

Could this be because my laptop is running windows 8?

Hi, last year I purchased an Acer laptop with Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium. (The key on sticker below the laptop) But after that I reformat with *ahem ahem* Windows 8.
Now I want to revert back to the Windows 7 Home Premium. If I download the Windows 7 Home premium, will I still be able to use that key?
The version is Windows 7 Home Premium OA SEA.
