India test-fires first cruise missile

India successfully test-fired its first domestically built nuclear-capable long-range cruise missile Friday, marking another step in building up the country's defence prowess.

The 'Nirbhay', or 'fearless', missile blasted off from a mobile launcher at the Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur in the eastern state of Orissa, the Press Trust of India reported.

"The trial was successful," a senior government official associated with the launch told the Press Trust of India national news agency.

"The outcome of the trial was ascertained by analysing the data retrieved from radars and telemetry points," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Unlike other ballistic missiles, Nirbhay has a wing and tail fins. The missile is intended to cruise like an aircraft, helped by its small fins, and can be launched from land, sea and air.

The surface-to-surface missile is fitted with a turbojet engine and is capable of flying at low altitudes to avoid detection. It can even hover near the target, striking from any direction without being seen on radar.

With a range of up to 1,000 kilometres, it gives India the capability to strike "deep into enemy territory", NDTV news network reported.

The Nirbhay is regarded by military experts as India's version of the US Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Friday's success comes after the subsonic missile's first test launch in March 2013 had to be aborted midway after it veered off course.

India, which shares borders with arch-rivals Pakistan and giant China, both of which are nuclear-armed, is developing the missile system to strengthen its air-defence capabilities.

India already has in its arsenal the supersonic BrahMos missile which it developed jointly with Russia.

India in 2012 successfully launched its nuclear-capable Agni V ballistic missile with a range of more than 5,000 kilometres.

The Indian military views the Agni V missile as a key boost to its regional power aspirations and one that narrows, albeit slightly, its huge gap with China's technologically advanced missile systems.

While the shorter-range Agni I and II were mainly developed with India's traditional rival Pakistan in mind, later versions with longer range reflect the shift in India's military focus towards China.

Just last month, Indian government scientists were in the news for winning Asia's race to Mars when its unmanned Mangalyaan spacecraft entered the Red Planet's orbit after a 10-month journey on a tiny budget. – AFP, Otober 17, 2014.

India's first Mars satellite enters orbit

India has successfully put a satellite into orbit around Mars, becoming the fourth country to do so.

The Mangalyaan robotic probe, one of the cheapest interplanetary missions ever, will soon begin work studying the Red Planet's atmosphere.

A 24-minute engine burn slowed the probe down enough to allow it to be captured by Mars' gravity.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country had achieved the "near impossible".

Speaking at the mission control centre in the southern city of Bangalore he said: "The odds were stacked against us. Of 51 missions attempted in world only 21 have succeeded. We have prevailed."

Only the US, Europe and Russia have previously sent missions to Mars, but India is the first country to succeed on its first attempt.

The latest US satellite, Maven, arrived at Mars on Monday.

US space agency Nasa congratulated its Indian counterpart, the Indian Space and Research Organization (Isro), on Wednesday's success.

"We congratulate @ISRO for its Mars arrival! @MarsOrbiter joins the missions studying the Red Planet," the agency tweeted.

There were some anxious moments at ground control as technicians waited for news Mangalyaan, says the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Bangalore.

Then cheers and applause broke out as the news came through that the probe had entered Mars's orbit.

Mr Modi congratulated the scientists and said: "Today all of India should celebrate our scientists. Schools, colleges should applaud this."

"If our cricket team wins a tournament, the nation celebrates. Our scientists' achievement is greater," he said.

The total cost of the Indian mission has been put at 4.5bn rupees ($74m; £45m), which makes it one of the cheapest interplanetary space missions ever.

The Mangalyaan probe will now set about taking pictures of the planet and studying its atmosphere.

One key goal is to try to detect methane in the Martian air, which could be an indicator of biological activity at, or more likely just below, the surface.

Mangalyaan - more formally referred to as Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) - was launched from the Sriharikota spaceport on the coast of the Bay of Bengal on 5 November 2013.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin urged the authorities to take action against Malay rights group Perkasa's president Datuk Ibrahim Ali for 'threatening' the Chinese community.

"It is a racist and seditious statement that is dangerous.

"Action should be taken against him as his statement is a clear threat," he told reporters at Parliament's lobby here on Monday.

He added that the authorities should use the Sedition Act to investigate Ibrahim over his statement.

Although supporting freedom of expression, Khairy said that Ibrahim had gone beyond that and had made a threat against the Chinese community by asking them to 'stock-up' for July 9.

He assured the Chinese community that the view put forth by Ibrahim was solely his own and did not represent that of Malays in general.

"Umno Youth does not subscribe to such a view," he added.

Ibrahim, who recently announced that Perkasa would hold a demonstration to counter the planned Bersih 2.0 street rally on July 9, had called on the Chinese to stock up on food.

Accident Near Glenmarie

Saw an Accident on the work between "Lori Hantu" and motorbike near Glenmarie. A quick look motorbike was under the lorry and saw a lady with blood on her face, there was another person lying next to her- dont really know what happen to him , i just cant take it. Lorry drivers pls be carefull.

PORT DICKSON: People with unusual names have become the latest headache for the Election Commission with critics ridiculing their existence but the commission says National Registration Department records prove that they are genuine voters.

The EC's detractors have been poking fun at the names of animals, vegetables as well as famous people both living and deceased in its roll of 12.8 million voters.

They have been asking why there are voters with names such as Timun (Cucumber), Kangkung (Water Convolvulus), Harimau (Tiger) and Kuda (Horse) in the rolls.

EC chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said these people with unusual names, who are mostly found in the interior areas of Sabah and Sarawak, were genuine voters.

Shah Alam Umno stage protest at Sg Rasau toll

SHAH ALAM: About 200 people from the Shah Alam Umno division staged a protest after the Sungai Rasau toll gate, urging the Government and relevant parties to abolish the toll.

They also urged for the Batu Tiga toll to be removed, saying that the tolls were affecting residents from Klang and Shah Alam.

Batu Tiga state seat coordinator and Umno Shah Alam deputy chief Zulkurnain Md Ruslan said those living in Shah Alam will have to pay a toll if they wanted to go out of the district.

"I hope the Government, in conjunction with Umno's 66th anniversary celebration, will consider removing both tolls," he told reporters on Friday.
