PS3 cannot start

guys,really need ur help here.i've bought a 320gb HDD from a buyer here in LYN.the item arrived safely packaged.but when i insert it into my ps3 it comes up saying "PS3 cannot start.correct harddisk was not found."

then i message the seller and told him to change my HDD cos i thought that it was corrupt.the he said
that theres nothing wrong with the HDD.he tested it on his laptop and pc and says that it works fine.
but he says that he'll change the HDD anyway.so today the package arive safely and when
put into my ps3,it still shows the same message.so what now?
does this mean i cant upgrade my ps3 into a larger HDD??

for ur info mine's is a 40gb phat model,no YLOD case before,
and when i insert the original HDD back in,it runs normally
